I just treated myself to a new workout outfit. I’ve been (rather unsuccessfully) trying to figure out a non-leggings-workout outfit…this is not that. I was, however, perusing Athleta for exactly those elusive non-leggings when I came across actual leggings in oxblood (or burgundy, in non-fashionspeak) and swooned.

I decided, right then and there, that oxblood leggings were exactly what I needed.

And I also decided that oxblood everything was also “needed” (we can debate that word later) in order to fully complete the monochromatic masterpiece in my mind.

My New Workout Outfit, Nailed

Athleta nailed it: oxblood leggings that are insanely comfy super supportive, made from recycled poly & easily as soft as my Beyond Yoga leggings (but sustainable & a fraction of the cost).

I had originally put several pairs of oxblood/burgundy leggings into my cart…but this dappled pair won out. They’re insanely comfortable, super supportive, made from recycled polyester, and easily as soft as my Beyond Yoga leggings (but sustainable, and a fraction of the cost).

Outfit Details

sweatshirt: Athleta Mindful Pullover (size xs) – this is, in my mind, a pretty perfect workout sweatshirt. It’s soft and drapey, slightly oversized, and thin enough to both fit under jackets pre-workout, and be functional during the warm-up. It’s also cute enough to wear on its own.

(psst! I also ended up keeping this adorbs merino wool sweater, also in burgundy. Post coming out soon, but there’s a sneak peek on IG, here.)

top: Athleta Foresthill Merino Wool Ascent Tank (size small) – Not itchy, and really comfortable for working out. The back is perforated, so it keeps me cool in the studio (and it’s easily cute enough to wear hiking). It comes in a few other colors — be sure to check out the gorgeous navy.

workout leggings: Athleta Glades Ultra High-Rise Elation Tight (size petite small) – these are some of the most comfortable tights I’ve EVER tried. There are a few other burgundy options (see below), but as a cautionary tale…avoid the laser cut tights. I found them horrifying itchy after several minutes of wear. For a plus-size option, I highly recommend this shimmery pair or this pair.

shoes: Adidas Swift Run Sneakers – This colorway is almost gone….but there are a ton of other colors. However, if you are looking for burgundy sneakers, try this pair by New Balance, or — wow — this insanely lux pair by Geox, or…just go in a different direction and snap up these super cool black/white sneaks at Athleta (they’re also New Balance).

  1. OH YES I see you’ve discovered Athleta’s Powervita fabric. It’s life-changing, and I agree that only my Beyond Yoga leggings are comparable in softness (but more expensive).

  2. I’m a big fan of Athleta, but I find their pants run pretty big. Although, I’ve only gotten pants there, not leggings. Did you find this with the leggings, too? Also, Adidas sneaks forever!

  3. I can confirm all of Shana’s thoughts on these Athleta products. The laser cut AND the mesh inserts are itchy, but adorable. I have the foresthill tank in two colors from last year, and in black it is nice enough for street wear. The foresthill turtlenecks are fab for outdoor workouts and again, in black are great for street wear. The leggings S said she should have bought are amazing. They are my favorites because unlike that super cute print, they have POCKETS. Huge pockets that disappear into the seams when not in use. And they come in full and 7/8 length so you can suit your esthetic and/or your sport. They have several different “lines” and each has a different fit, so don’t give up if you try on a few things and they are not flattering. Athleta fits me better than Lulu and is cheaper and maybe better quality.

One final thing – their return policy is great. They have a wash it and wear it guarantee. So you can buy a sport bra and test it in action. Or itchy leggings, LOL
