Over-the-Knee Boots and Comfy Shift Dresses: Two Ways

I’ve had a rather glorious (albeit crazy) couple of weeks.  My parents were visiting, and then my sister and her family came to stay.  It was all a bit nuts as you can imagine, but fun.  We spent most of our time just walking around Philly.  The days were very warm, the nights cold, and Philly was doing that crisp fall-leaves-in-the-air thing it does so well.

And I basically wore the same version of this outfit the entire time:  Dress + OTK Boots + Something warm.

My rule for coats and dresses is that a couple of inches of difference between the hemlines will always work.  The coat can be longer, or the dress can be longer, but as long as they’re basically within a few inches, it’s good.

How cute is my mom?

Outfit Details

dress: Joe Fresh Brushstroke Print Ponte Dress c/o – insanely comfy – I’ve hemmed it quite a bit shorter

turtleneck: J.Crew tissue turtleneck

coat: French Connection Mixed Media Cutaway Coat c/o (size 0 – but it fits a size smaller than most) – if the ‘final sale’ scares you away, I have my eye on this gray Kenneth Cole jacket that’s part of the Nordstrom sale (comes in reg or petite), or this Kensie wool coat – it has a very similar vibe to the one I’m wearing, but is half the cost (the price isn’t correct in the shopping widget) – or this Steve Madden belted plaid coat – so very mod and cool (and 50% off!)

boots: Nine West OTK Boots

bag: Elizabeth and James Duffle Bag

Sooo…I bought THE BOOTS.  It turns out that I cannot resist OTK Weiztman at 40% off.  (Sale ends on the 15th, I think.)

dress: Joe Fresh Brushstroke Print Ponte Dress c/o – insanely comfy – I’ve hemmed it quite a bit shorter (size xs)

sweaterZady Chunky Knit Sweater c/o (size xs)

boots: Stuart Weitzman Playtime OTK boots in swamp (40% off!) – So these boots really are everything.  Insanely comfortable, like walk-around-all-day.  Aptly named, if you ask me.

bag: Rebecca Minkoff Julian Fringe backpack

scarf: old, but this faux-fur cowl from Maurices is very similar. Otherwise, I’m kinda dying over these at Nordstrom:  oxblood and blush, this realistic faux-fur, and either color in this Badgley Mischka

sunglasses: Prada c/o Ditto <- seriously cool glasses shop.  Good 3-d viz, and a glasses rental program.  It’s addicting.

Sooo…I’ve managed to come down with a little case of the flu.  Which reminds me:  FLU SHOTS.  Have you gotten yours?  I’ll be getting one as soon as I shake this thing.  I mean seriously.  November already.  Someone I know *cough*cough* may have already started decorating for Christmas.  Although one could argue that gold glitter stars are good any time of year.  Yes.  Let’s go with that.

ps.  Huge thank you to the commenters lately.  I really do try and respond to most, but I am falling a bit behind right now.  It’s amazing to see how often you guys help each other out – advice, links, product details.  You are a big part of why we all keep trucking away over here, and I feel really lucky that you not only read my nonsense, but you actually take the time to comment, and help each other out.  So thank you.  You rock.

  1. Oh man, I really need to try some OTK boots eventually. They’re just so expensive! Even at 40% off I have sticker shock. I mean, I don’t know where I would wear them either…but I think I need them anyway. 🙂

    • Hey Monica! I hear you on the sticker shock, so I thought I should share: I just bought these boots http://m.dsw.com/shop/product/308254?prodId=308254

I was skeptical because they are so affordable, even for me, but I love them. They are comfy and look fantastic on — not Stuart Weitzman quality and I wouldn’t wear them in super snowy or very wet weather but for a budget purchase to try out a trend, I totally recommend them.

        • I’ve been looking to dip a toe into this trend (also unsure about it for short – ahem – solid legs!) but haven’t found OTK boots at a lower price point that are…wait for it…actually OTK! Can I ask how tall you are? Nothing good about a boot that just digs into the bottom of your knee cap – yikes! Love that they’re (fake) suede – hard to find but usually looks much better than fake leather. Thanks for sharing, Danielle!

          • Ok I am short! Only 5’3″ and the boots do not come up very high above my knee, so that’s definitely a consideration.

    • Kim, have you tried any OTK boots on? I thought the same thing over here. Numerous squats = curvy thighs. Eek. Ordered a couple pairs from H&M (fit true to size and run around $60 – less with promo code). Surprised to say I love them!

      • I haven’t, but I don’t think I will. I just don’t like the way they look. I’ve tried, but I don’t. I felt the same way about overalls.

  2. I got the Stuart Weitzmans in the burgundy and I cannot get enough of them – the price is terrible though. But still, I took them to Chicago with me this weekend on a trip with my 15 mo old and wore them everyday walking downtown for MILES. I cannot get over how comfortable they are!!

ps how is that Joe Fresh dress so inexpensive and cute? I’m mega pregnant now so I’m hesitant about making purchases I cannot try on, but it looks adorable!! Ugh, on the fence!

    • Yup. I just wore these over leggings (will have to throw that pic up on Instagram for you)….and skinny jeans YES. But. I’ve noticed that if my skinny jeans have a hugely rolled cuff, the OTK boots aren’t comfortable. But my skinnies that I’ve hemmed to the right length *cough*hackedoff*cough are fine. Or anything super skinny (like the levi 535s, my softer, skinniest Rag and Bone) are all fine. Scrunched up at the bottom is fine, just not cuffed.

  3. I love these! I’m sure you’ve answered this before but would you mind sharing how tall you are? I’m 5’2″ and trying to get a sense of where these boots would fall on me relative to you. Also, do the Weitzmans fit over skinny jeans?

  4. I’m 5′ 4″ and short legged and thinnish but curvy. I find that OTK boots over skinny jeans make my legs look unattractively truncated, but that they absolutely ROCK with short dresses. My “uniform” right now is black OTK boots over black tights, a swingy skater dress, and a cropped denim jacket or vest. Love! My budget is very-very-very tight, but after lots of agonizing I got my Blondo Eden boots last spring 50% off – thanks for the recommendation, Shana! – and already they are one of the best wardrobe investments I’ve made.
