Weekend Hangs: Outfit, Outing, And Our New Fav Restaurant (with kids)

We skipped soccer this year.  We asked the kids if they wanted to play, and Raines said no and Pax was just….meh.  Pax, who, as I type this, is currently clad in his Roman costume fighting himself in the mirror, would pick pretend over sports any day.  Because he’s six. So….OK.  No soccer this year.

Truth be told?  It’s been GLORIOUS.  Our weekends are filled with sleeping in (while the boys play video games #don’tjudge), leisurely walks around Philly, and hitting some of our forgotten favorites.  The favorites that make Philly such an amazing place to raise kids, but ones that we often take for granted – like the The Franklin Institute.  Their brain exhibit is always a hit with our little guys (and an amazing way to get their energy out), and picked up some after-hours tickets for the new (and CREEPY) Terracota Warriors exhibit.  We’re talking thousands of life-sized statues discovered in the tomb of the First Emperor of China.  It’s insanely fascinating and so perfect for Halloween.

Then we headed back to our hood for dinner at Trattoria Carina, aka the new Fitler Dining Room, aka our new favorite place to hang. It’s delicious, and – bonus! – doesn’t take reservations (which I can never get my shit together enough to make).

BEFORE I FORGET:  Social Threads.  They sent me the sweater I’m wearing AND a discount code for you guys.  Take $15 off orders of $100 or more with code MOMEDIT15.  (And I have a few other suggestions below…..)

The Outing

We’ve been hitting up the brain exhibit since Pax was a toddler….and couldn’t climb through himself.  I started – years ago – helping him navigate through the maze, and over the years it’s turned into some sort of finger-gun shooting game crossed with tag.  There are advantages to being 5’2″…..as there are advantages to being a man with a camera when your wife is attempting to squeeze through faux neuron pathways.  #thanksMIKE

If you ever loose your kid in the brain exhibit and I happen to be there….wave me down.  Retrieving small children  from life-size neurons is kiiiind of my specialty.

Our New Favorite Restaurant

Trattoria Carina – from the makers who brought us Pub and Kitchen – no but seriously:  some of the best Italian food I’ve had in a loooong time.

Long live the weekend.

  1. I love the Franklin Institute! I really need to get back there. Weekends are limited though because my kids still wanted to play soccer!

  2. I got the thermal camo t a few weeks ago – it’s great but the thumbholes are weirdly placed. Nearly cuts off the circulation in my hands. 🙂 (I have very normal-sized hands, FYI). 😉

  3. Really liked your post and those are some great photos, Mike did a great job capturing it all, especially the indoor ones with the colored lighting, that’s so hard to do. I went to Xian China (home of the terracotta soldiers) this year with my boy (13), and they had a similar line up with soldiers where you can pose with them, it’s pretty cool. I didn’t see Pax’s little face till later, ha ha! i also loved the pic of Pax holding his soldier and Raines in the background, very nicely captured. Also, really like your outfit, rocking those white boots, nice!

  4. 9 am toddler soccer, coached by moi, followed by double-dose of 11am gymnastics. WHAT. WERE. WE. THINKING? And where tf did my weekends go?

  5. I’m so glad to hear there’s another mom who skipped fall sports this year. It’s a great big world out there with plenty of other things to do! (Like sleep in. Not kidding.) And let’s be serious, not every 8 year old who plays rec soccer is going to Oberlin on a soccer scholarship, right? #justsaynotosports (sometimes)
