Spring Backpacks and Cool Shoes: They’ll Update Even Your Most Casual Outfits

Need a quick wardrobe refresh?  Yeah.  Me too.  I’ve been trying to figure out what particular Spring trend to highlight, what new and exciting twist could make our hearts sing.  And after scrolling through pages and pages of pretty dresses, flowy skirts, and sky-high heels that I have no business looking at (while in my sweatpants, mind you)…I tossed it all out. I’m just gonna wear what I’m just gonna wear.  Which basically boils down to wearing the exact same thing…only better.

My Spring update couldn’t be easier:  pretty backpack, cool shoes, bright lips.  This virtually fool-proof combo works with even the most casual of outfits (think windbreakers and sneakers), as well as slightly elevated basics, like double denim and cute hoodies.  (If you follow me on Instagram –  @shanachristine  – you’ve already seen this in action.)

Outfit 1: Lace-Up Flats + Cool Backpacks

Lace-up flats are so huge this Spring, and I managed to find a pair that are honestly comfortable (and only $56!).  I love how a statement shoe and cool backpack can make even a hoodie and jeans look like a real outfit.  (A double-denim layer doesn’t hurt, either.)

Outfit Details

jacket: Splurged on this old Joe’s Jeans jacket 10+ years ago, and it’s literally never gone out of style.  If I were to buy one today, I’d probably go for something with an equally classic shape, like this ultra-soft jean jacket from Current/Elliott, or – GASP – this spot-on perfect one from Paige Denim.

hoodie: Nike Gym Vintage Hoodie (size small for reference)

jeans: Rag and Bone Tomboy Jeans in Roscoe (size 25 my usual size – also, I did end up chopping the hems off a bit more, as first discussed here)

shoes: BP Lace-Up Flats, $56 (vegan leather, shockingly comfortable – I can walk all over Philadelphia in these.  Not to be confused with the Halogen lace-up flats which are NOT nearly as comfy.)

backpack: Marc Jacobs Mini Biker Canvas Backpack

sunglasses: ksny Jakalyn

lips: YSL Oil-in-Stick, number 46 (orange) – really, this deserves a post all by itself.  I’ve been wearing this for years from YSL, and each year they improve it a little bit.  This year totally blew my mind.  The most moisturizing bright lip EVER.

on Raines: Pineapple shirt, Tucker & Tate pants (here’s a similar pair), Nikes (size up – we went up a full size)

on Pax: Hunter Rainboots (all day everyday), Strider Bike (one of my all-time best purchases)

Outfit 2: Backpacks and Kicks

With a statement backpack, even sneakers and windbreakers look cool.

I planned on wearing this outfit with Adidas’ Stan Smith sneakers, but to be honest, I found them uncomfortable without socks.  (They don’t breathe…AT ALL.)  Nike’s Air Max sneakers are having a renaissance, however, and walk that fine line between iconic cool and mumsy.  Dangerous territory, I know, but I think I love them.  (Also?  Blindingly comfortable.  Which may be part of the problem.)

Outfit Details

jacket: K-Way Claudette Waterproof Raincoat (size S for reference)

tshirt: Rag and Bone Longsleeve tee (size s, but I should’ve done an xs) – I love these stupidly expensive tshirts.  Ugh. So sorry.

jeans: Rag and Bone Tomboy Jeans in Roscoe (size 25 my usual size – also, I did end up chopping the hems off a bit more, as first discussed here)

sneakers: Nike Air Max 1

backpack: Dolce Girl Floral Backpack, $58 (quality isn’t sky-high compared to the Marc Jacobs, but the price is amazing)

sunglasses: Ray-Ban Youngster (20% off!!) – love these things.  So comfy and lightweight.

lips: YSL Oil Tint – for a softer color, these are amazing.  They feel like an oil, and the shine fades, leaving a pretty (yet bright) color behind.

on Raines: Adidas Tech Snake climacool shirt

Backpack + Spring Shoe Combos

In the spirit of keeping it easy, here are my very favorite backpack + shoe combos.  The collages are clickable – just click on the pic you like to be taken to the product page.

Shop Spring Backpacks

There are so many good backpacks at Nordstrom right now.  Here are all of my favorites (many are on sale!):

Shop Pretty Flats

Everyone needs at least one pair of drool-worthy, yet comfy flats this Spring.  (There are a ton to choose from, so be picky.)

Shop Cool Kicks

I have gotten three (3!!!) reader requests for sneakers in the last week.  Here are ones that keep catching my eye…

A huge thank-you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post.  As always, all thoughts, product choices, opinions, and whining about Stan Smiths is alllll me.  And readers, thank you for your continued support of The Mom Edit.  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated.  (That said, feel free to send cool sneaker finds our way.  That trend will NEVER go out of style round here.)

photo cred:  Mike (thanks, Babe!) xo

    • Love these!! I have an old pair (rose gold and black), and I’m dying over the peach/purple/orange linked to above. But you’re right – they do come in a million spot-on combos. Thanks for the link!

  1. Awe, I’ve been dying to see you rocking the Stan Smiths! I recently bought a pair and am loving them (though my feet are always cold… so I haven’t noticed the breathability thing?). Love these looks!

  2. I just went and tried on about 5 pairs of lace-up flats at the flagship Nordstrom in Seattle. Guess which ones were the most comfy? Yep, the BP Katrina that you recommended. They didn’t have my size, so based on the 6 I ordered a 5.5 (larger of my two in-between sizes) in the black and white graphic print. These were softer and more comfy than $130 pairs with leather linings.

  3. This post is exactly what I needed to get me through spring in the NW. I don’t like having a completely separate wardrobe for spring here because it is basically the same as the previous 6 months, as far as weather. These combos will hopefully give me enough pep in my step to make it until summer hits here…in July!!!! Sad.

  4. I have the Fjallraven backpack and have been using it a lot now that it’s getting hot in Savannah (sorry northerners) and i need to carry atleast three large water bottles everywhere we go. Someone asked me what Fjallraven meant and I , of course, had no idea (I swear i knew at some point) and the guy lamented that he thought he was going to learn something new and I felt like such a dorky fashiony loving tool!!!

  5. Yay! I totally ordered a pair of air max sneakers pictured today BEFORE I even read this. Feeling myself ;). Love this one!

  6. Ooo, Shana, this one was a fun post. I have those Adidas water shoes/sneakers and use them to garden in too because they can get soaked and they dry so quickly. I also wanted to tell you that the Rachel Zoe peasant blouse you helped me out with is my favorite maternity piece right now. I am shocked that it managed to get all the way to clearance- it is so flattering. xo!!

  7. I have been wearing jean, trouser/sneaker combo since 1985….ok this shows my age ( Tretorns were my first) and I am convinced even at my age it will never go out of style. Having three boys and being on the go, this fashion statement has always been my go to. I bought the Vince grey hi tops you recommended in the fall and they have had a workout so on to the new spring sneaker trend! Thanks Shana for a FABULOUS blog!

  8. Love this post! I am now on the hunt for a stylish backpack having spent the week being tourists in San Fran. Been using big ugly school backpack belonging to my son, but love that I have both hands free for the kids in tow.

Incidently, have you tried the Stan Smith OrthoLite line? I tired them side by side with regular Stan Smiths and they were WAY more comfy. The tag says that it’s made to be more breathable. I’ve yet to try the sockless, but used low profile socks.

  9. I love that you love backpacks and are still mega stylish! I carry them for work and play and these suggestions are great

  10. Asics makes awesome vintage looking sneakers that are leather, breathable, and comfortable without socks. I have the onitsuka tigers Mexico 66. I love them so much! Also, your hair is so perfect in that first set!

  11. Love this post. And I’m with you- my Nike Frees need to be replaced- but what is up with the new version?!?!?!? Going to have to take a look at these kicks…Thanks for the inspiration!

  12. Has anyone had experience with Palladium sneakers? They have a slip on version that I’m considering. Some days laces are too daunting. 🙂

  13. Do you have suggestions for backpacks that can replace diaper bags and have side pockets to hold the kids water bottles?
