I’m seeing light purple (lilac, orchid, amethyst) EVERYWHERE this fall. I kind of love that it’s a little bit unexpected and not your typical “fall color.”

I usually wear neutrals, but this lilac felt so fresh that I wanted to try it. And the easiest way for me to incorporate any new color trend into my wardrobe — because my closet is full of blacks, greys and other neutrals — is to simply add a coat. It’s an instant outfit refresh.

Lilac Coats: Making A Bold Statement With A Soft Color

It turns out that purple is *supposed* to be a universally flattering shade, and if this lilac is any indication…I’m in. It’s like a facelift (or maybe, less aggressively, like wearing a really nice blush). I love how it instantly takes my usual uniform (black sweater, jeans) in a really feminine direction. Lilac coats are just so pretty. And, it turns out, really easy to wear.

The Base Outfit

My usual uniform (worn under the coat) is usually some variation of black sweater, cute jeans and black boots. I was curious about these Joe’s jeans (I’ve never tried Joe’s before) and was happy to discover that they’re perfect in both the rise and length (which almost never happens). They’re also comfortable (a must for me,) and I love the wash and ever-so-slight distressing.

If anyone is currently on the hunt for an everyday black sweater (one with a casual, almost sweatshirt-like vibe, but with the drape of a sweater) I highly recommend this Tahari one. I like that it can be worn untucked, but still show off a waist so nicely. Comes in some cute patterns, too.

Outfit Details

coat: Sam Edelman Boucle Blazer Coat (s) – Love the color, the fit, everything about this coat. (Also in red, gold and classic black.)

jeans: Joe’s Jeans High Rise Cropped Bootcut Jeans (29) – These were such a good find…the perfect length for me (I’m 5’4″) without having to crop them!

boots: Naturalizer Ella Bootie – Seriously comfortable boots that are also cute. I love the way they look under cropped jeans but they’d also work with dresses and full-length jeans.

sweater: T Tahari Crew Neck Long Sleeve Pullover Sweater (xs) – This one comes in such cute patterns (love the dots!) but classic black is always a good choice. I like the way it drapes so nicely and defines the waist without having to tuck it in.

umbrella: ShedRain Iridescent Umbrella – SUCH a fun umbrella! I think Greenlea will be trying to steal this one from me…

earrings: Kendra Scott Aragon Drop Earrings – The iridescent colors on these earrings look really cool, and different in different lights.

Shop Lilac Coats

I’m now a big fan of lilac coats, especially since my wardrobe consists of so much black and gray, and Nordstrom Rack has a ton of really good ones (all under $100!). I’m excited to layer my wool coat over sweater dresses for holiday parties, and I think all of these coat options would be really cute with jeans and sneakers, too.

(ps. The entire team LOVES these p448 sneakers; seriously flattering, thanks to the slight platform, and super-comfortable. That pattern would be especially pretty with a lilac coat.)

XOXO,

Scotti
