When I first saw this super-stylish, fabulously designed statement jacket online, I thought…”I LOVE the look of this coat. I love the ultra-cool color combination, the faux-shearling details, the colorblock style, BUT…unfortunately, it’s definitely a no-go for me.” 

I have absolutely no tolerance for uncomfortable coats that are stiff and bulky, and this MOTHER jacket appeared online like it would be one of those dense and heavy coats that feels like it’s made of bricks.

Why, then, did I keep clicking back to look at it again and again?

Admiring the perfectly cheerful (but not too over the top) color combo and the superb attention to detail in the design. Envisioning a crisp fall Saturday afternoon where I treat myself to a blowout, casually throw this jacket over denim, rock my tall fancy clogs, and let my hair blow glamorously in the wind as I walk to the corner grocery store in super-cool style.

Ugh…this jacket was just too dang enticing. Next thing I know…the jacket — that I was certain would NOT meet my fall top-layer requirements — was on its way to me.

 

Ultra-Soft + Lightweight: This MOTHER Faux-Shearling Puffer Jacket Has It All

My initial instincts were completely wrong. This MOTHER colorblock jacket is not at all dense and bulky. It’s actually ultra-soft, nice and comfy! Although online it has the look of a heftier coat, it FEELS like you’re wearing a casual lightweight puffer. Pillowy (but not marshmallow-puffy), not at all constricting, and with gobs and gobs of statement style. I love it!

Warmth: Even though the feel of this jacket is lightweight, it has those awesome puffed panels that add enough warmth for me to wear comfortably on colder days. It hits just the right balance for my personal preferences on top layers…lightweight and flexible, but still warm enough to stand outside on the playground on colder fall days.

Sizing: I typically wear an XS to S in short jackets, and I’m very happy that I went with the XS here. The jacket definitely has a boxy shape, and I think the larger size would have been too overwhelming on my smaller-on-the-top frame. For reference I’m 5’2.

Trim & Colorway: The faux-shearling collar, cuff and pocket panels elevate the style of the jacket for sure, but the ’70s-vibe colorway and blocking is really what made this coat irresistible. Just SO good.

The Rest Of My Fall-Outfit Details: Veronica Beard, FRAME & See By Chloe

For my everyday-casual uniform, I most often wear these MOTHER Insiders or these MOTHER Tomcat Rollers, but these Veronica Beard Taylors are what I wear when I’m wanting to create a more put-together look. With my make-me-so-tall clogs and a fitted top tucked in, the Taylors definitely perform some pretty amazing leg-lengthening trickery.

I typically wear a 28 or 29 in most denim, and I like the fit of the 28 in the Taylors best. They feel ultra-snug when going on the first time, but they’re 100% cotton and stretch and mold to your shape, so they fit to your body after just a bit of wear.

This puff-sleeve FRAME T-shirt comes in an absolutely gorgeous Pine green as well as black, but the deep Americano brown is my favorite for fall. It’s soft, 100% cotton, and has the weight and feel of a tee but the look of a special top with puff sleeve and ruching. I like the fitted XS tucked in with high-rise, wide-leg denim, but I definitely could’ve also gone with a small if I wanted a more relaxed fit.

My See By Chloe mini saddle bag also comes in several colors (even more here), but the Biscotti Brown feels the most versatile for my wardrobe, which is heavy on warmer tones. It definitely has that effortlessly chic feel in person and will work for me year-round. I wore it this past weekend over a casual white top and jeans, and it felt just as good as when I wore it over a black dress.
