Lighten Up! A Boots, Puffer & Jean Refresh For Not-Quite-Spring

I’m a bit bored with the head-to-toe black I wear all winter long. Black puffer, black snow boots, black jeans, black mittens…you get the idea. These pieces are useful and do their job well, but by February every winter I’m definitely bored.

So…I decided to work on a little winter refresh formula. The easiest way I’ve found to refresh any winter look?

Take your absolute favorite winter pieces (for me that’s the puffer jacket, comfy boots, jeans, and all the winter accessories), and just lighten them up.

An easy way to refresh a winter look? Take my fave cold-weather outfit pieces (puffer jacket, boots, jeans + all the winter accessories) & lighten them up. Think: whites, creams, bones, chalks, silvers, ashes & light grays.

Winter Style, But Make It Spring: A Cold-Weather Outfit Refresh

Finding these fabulously comfy gray Sorel sneaker-boots, this adorable white North Face puffer, and these Abercrombie ’90s jeans at Zappos definitely helped with this “refresh project”, but there are a ton of other fresh winter boots, puffers, denim, and winter accessories out there as well (keep scrolling to see more options…many on sale).

Or… you may even have some of these lighter pieces in your closet waiting patiently for the opportunity to be part of a winter refresh. Think: whites, creams, bones, chalks, silvers, ashes and light grays. Bring them all out to play. These lighter, brighter, more energized hues are JUST what I need to breathe some new life into my February.

My goal here was finding easy steps for a winter refresh, but keep in mind that the cute, sporty SORELS could easily transition to spring. Their waterproof design and fresh color are perfect for outdoor springtime excursions or any spring sporty look. The short puffer (faux fur is removable) could also be transitioned for spring and worn on those cooler days with all the lighter pastels that are coming our way.

I made four switch-outs to my go-to outdoor winter uniform for this late-winter refresh. First, I swapped out my black snow boots for these super-comfy, super-cute, sportier gray SORELS (Shana is in love with her SOREL Kinetic Conquests as well). Second, I replaced my black puffer with a shorter brighter white one from The North Face. Third, I updated my base outfit to a lighter patterned sweater with lighter denim in a new-to-me silhouette. And finally, I added lighter-colored winter accessories. Voilà….a brighter, fresher winter look that feels ready to transition into early spring.

1. Sorel Sneaker Boots In A Fresh Gray Hue

dore my UGG Classic Hikers, but these SORELS give me a totally different look (while still keeping my feet happy and warm). The sportier sneaker-boot works well with denim for walking the city pavement, but I'm also looking forward to trying them with all my fav athleisure & leggings, too.

The sportier sneaker-boot works well with denim for walking the city pavement, but I’m also looking forward to trying them with all my fave athleisure and leggings too. I’m wearing my usual size 7.5 for boots (I wear 7s in sandals), and they feel great. So cute and incredibly comfortable. Plenty of cushion and zero break-in time for me.

Although they're plenty warm, these Sorels are lined in microfleece (not shearling like my other boots), so I could easily wear them into spring as well, especially with the lighter color. And...they're waterproof for wet rainy spring hikes.

2. The North Face Short Puffer In Bright White

The North Face Down Short Jacket is shorter than any of my other puffers, so it feels fresh & more modern. The North Face also got the double-breasted snap closure and internal zip just right---looks great both closed and open.

This jacket you guys! I am in love! The North Face Down Short Jacket is shorter than any of my other puffers, so it feels fresh and more modern. The North Face also got the double-breasted snap closure and internal zip just right—looks great both closed and open. Water-repellant finish, elastic sleeve cuffs, and machine-washable. Win, win, and win.

And for spring? The faux fur trim is removable! Although I really like the faux fur contrast to the rest of the jacket, I love the idea of an easy transition to spring without it.

3. A Playful Print Sweater With Abercrombie ’90s Jeans

I WILL say that of the many MANY pairs of slouchy denim I've tried this winter, these Abercrombie & Fitch '90s Ultra High-Rise Relaxed Jeans are by far the most comfortable and best fitting for my body type.

The verdict is still out on how I feel about ’90s-style denim in general. I WILL say that of the many MANY pairs of slouchy denim I’ve tried this winter, these Abercrombie & Fitch ’90s Ultra High-Rise Relaxed Jeans are by far the most comfortable and best fitting for my body type. It also feels fun for February to wear a new-to-me denim silhouette that definitely works well with snow, rain and hiking boots. I’m working on a post showing them with higher-heeled clogs, as well as cuffed and uncuffed, to give you a better idea of their versatility in addition to a few other Abercrombie jeans I tried.

I am truly pumped that Zappos (with their free expedited shipping when you sign up to be a Zappos VIP member and 365-day returns) carries such a large selection of Abercrombie denim. The price-point for Abercrombie jeans is good. Also loving the selection of playful print black and white and gray sweaters at Zappos (many on sale). My black turtleneck sweater is a workhorse but it feels great to switch things up during late winter with a playful pattern in lighter colors.

4. Light-Colored Winter Accessories

I own these North Face cozy mittens in two colors--they're toasty, comfortable, flexible and easily squish into coat pockets.

Simple, lighter-colored hats and mittens to top off the look. I own these North Face cozy mittens in two colors–they’re toasty, comfortable, flexible and easily squish into coat pockets. The Pendelton hat pairs its silvery-gray yarn with a perfectly sized faux fur pom, and this rag & bone carryall comes in a bazillion colors (sherpa as well as recycled polyester), but for a winter refresh, I’m into the light-colored sherpa.

I had so much fun updating my winter uniform with Zappos. I’ve always shopped at Zappos for shoes and boots for the entire family (looking at my order history I’ve bought Keens for the kids the past 13 summers and winters in a row!) Zappos (as it has forever) arrives fast! Their free expedited shipping when you sign up to be a Zappos VIP member and 365-day returns has saved me SO many times when I realize my kids desperately need the next size up!

Recently, though, I’ve been super-pleased with Zappos’ great selection of coats, winter accessories and jeans as well…and the free expedited shipping and easy returns is a huge bonus for these types of purchases as well. They make it VERY easy.

Thank you so much to ShopStyle Collective and Zappos for sponsoring this post. I am always MORE than happy to talk about comfortable shoes, cute puffers and all the denim. Thank you also to all our TME readers –your time and support are very much appreciated.
