I was in desperate need of new denim shorts. As you may have heard (if you’re an avid reader of TME), I’ve ā ahem ā changed sizes. Thank you, stay-at-home orders.
So when Nordstrom reached out, I initially thought I was going to talk about cut-offs. And I am!! I actually found two pairs I love ā a pair from Free People that I like a bit oversized and this insanely comfy pair from Good American that has a lower hem on the back of the leg.

But that…was almost too easy. Instead of some sort of epic online search, multiple boxes, try-ons, tears, returns, more boxes, more try-ons, more tears…I found both pairs of shorts almost immediately ā clearly the stars were aligned ā and have been wearing them ever since.
And she and her shorts lived happily ever after.
But a denim short needs a cute top to play with, and this, my friends, is harder. Especially if you’d like to keep your frivolous top budget to something under $100. Luckily, Nordstrom has a huge selection of just these sorts of tops, so I actually found three. Of course, since I ordered, styled, shot and wrote…two of them are almost sold out. But I also included both similar options and some seriously cute alternatives ā all under $100 ā because there’s nothing that makes a gal feel good about sizing up like a cute. new. outfit.
A Cute Tank + The Unicorn of High-Rise Denim Shorts (They’re Actually Comfy)
These Good American shorts might be the holy grail of denim shorts: a fresh, modern high-rise, but done in a comfortable stretch denim…with a cut and wash that gives off all the nonchalantly cool vibes. These are not Skin-Tight-Stretchy-Shorts. I paired them with this tank (the straps are there, just tucked away) and classic Vans because that’s the state of my pedicure for the foreseeable future.

A Pretty Top With Sleeves + Those New Fav Cut-Offs
Sometimes I just want sleeves. And while I adore this Topshop top (basically made from eyelet-cut, t-shirt material), it’s almost completely sold out. However, I did find some seriously good alternatives ā turns out, a sleeve can make a basic summer blouse really, really pretty.

A Not-Boring Tee + Boyfriend-y Cut-Offs
These are the Free People shorts I was talking about. They’re a comfortable mid-rise that looks more modern than my low-rise pairs (yet aren’t overly hot like some high-rise can be), and basically feel like the shorts version of boyfriend jeans. And I’m never not gonna love a tee with ’70s vibes. Gimme.

1) I love wearing cut-off denim with an embroidered (i.e ‘fancy’) white top in the summer. It’s a favorite summer uniform!
2) I want you to know that I have thought of your dear husband being simply proud as punch with his data-driven answer to your “question” almost daily since you published that gem. I imagine a situation similar to a guileless golden retriever, smiling broadly and anticipating praise after laying a dead skunk at your feet. (which is, I hope, a less creepy thing to say than ‘I’ve been thinking of your butt daily’ š )

The good american shorts look so good. Need them. Yes when my leggings started to feel tight I knew things were changingš. I call it the Covid 10..
Iām now sort of in between sizes, I keep buying two of everything and sending one back because I canāt decide what size to get. I think you look fantastic!!! Always.
