Summer Shoes For Guys (Picked By Guys)

If there’s one thing I can’t buy for Mike, it’s shoes.  I can usually nail the shirt-and-tie combo, suits are a no brainer (blue Hugo Boss all day long), and even with jeans and tees I have a success rate of over 50%.  But shoes?  Not even close.  The man is super picky about shoes.  And so is Scotti’s husband, Zack.  And, now that I think about it….so is my Dad.  Is this a man thing?

In any case, when Nordstrom asked me to take a look at their selection of guys’ shoes (which, btw, is starting to rival their women’s selection), I turned the whole thing over to Mike and Zack, instructing them to pick shoes they would actually wear this summer.

True to form, their picks surprised me.  So.  From our guys to yours, here are our favorite summer man shoes.

The Best Summer Shoes For Guys (Picked By Guys)

1. Cole Haan Pinch Penny Loafer, $130

This might be my top pick.  The sneaker bottom and conservative upper are a solid choice for skateboarding to work in a suit.   These are like cool old-man shoes.

2. Born Allen Slip-On, $115

Just a really sweet weekend shoe.  Wear these like sneakers – with jeans, shorts, whatever – but they’ll look way sharper.

3. Rockport Path To Greatness Slip On, $110

Similar to the Cole Haan  – can’t decide which I like better.

4. Joe’s Vertu Espadrille, $185

Similar to the one above – another badass weekend shoe – but with unique styling.

5. To Boot New York Morgan Double Monk Strap, $199

Normally these things are $400, so when they’re on sale I jump.  I like this color especially in the warmer months – goes great with lighter suits.  And the monkstrap is a modern update on the oxford.  Looks sleek.

6. Nike Tennis Classic Flyknit, $150

I wear these bad boys everywhere – date night, weekends, a spontaneous squash game.  Super lightweight.  Best all around summer sneaker.

7. New Balance Utility Sneaker, $80

Just a sweet design.

8.  Havaianas Brazil Flip-Flops, $24

I’m a 90’s guy.  I’ll always have a pair of flip-flops close by.

1.  Sanuk Admiral Boat Shoe, $60

My favorite summer shoe – I don’t wear sandals, so these are as close as I get.  They’re lightweight, comfortable and can go in and out of the water.

2. Cole Haan ZeroGrand Wingtip, $270

A sweet dress shoe for work or weddings in the summer.

3. Paul Sperry Flex Deck Boat Shoe, $56

Sperrys are sweet and versatile.

4. Nike Jordan Eclipse Sneaker, $110

I never thought I’d like a pair of Jordan’s, but these are lower-profile and just a cleaner style.

5. Vans Cali – Era 59 Sneakers, $60

The classic summer shoe – wear with jeans or shorts.

6. Nike Stefan Janoski Max SB Skateboard Shoe, $110

Love this style of shoe for long bike rides or days when we’re out of the house all day.  Comfortable.

7. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Chuck II High Top, $80

I wear these everywhere.  Classic Chucks will always be in style.

8. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II Ox Canvas Sneaker, $75

Converse shoes have always been my favorite.  Will always be my favorite.

What are your thoughts on the man-sandal?  Mike is intrigued by this male fashion trend….but they still didn’t make his list of top picks.  Hmmmm….

A huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!  There’s nothing my husband likes more than being woken up at 5AM to a cup of coffee, and a wife with a laptop: “I need you to pick out some shoes”.  Haha, just kidding.  But seriously – we’re always thrilled at the opportunity to help up Dad’s style game, and this was a fun one.  As always, all thoughts, opinions, and product choices are our own.  And readers, thank you so much for your continued support of The Mom Edit.  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated.

  1. buying shoes for my husband is not allowed. It became off limits when I tried to buy him fishermen sandals one summer and he ended up with five pair. Three or four of which he left in a bucket (?) in his studio in hot and humid Savannah for months and they grew their own colony of fuzzy mold. Gross.

So now he goes and buys one really expensive pair of shoes every six months. He recently bought a pair of OluKai lace ups and he says they are the most comfortable pair of shoes he’s had in years.

    His studio shoes are Keens.

And he will wear sandals but you sort of have to agree to some kind of airy shoe living here.

  2. I actually only pulled the website up to comment that my husband is nowhere near as cool as Mike or Zack (nor am I as cool as you guys to be able to guide him) but he has almost those exact red new balances. Score!

But! Then I read Mike’s comments in the “shop Mike’s favorites” and they’re hilarious! I’m sitting here at my laptop pumping and giggling to myself. ha!

  3. I just went through an exercise to get my husband some new shoes for summer, and it is hard! But I finally picked two winners that he likes.

The Adidas Boat Shoe (great for water, boating, rafting, etc.):

    And these slip-ons:

The only sandals my husband will wear are flip flops. Not sure that counts.

  4. I’d argue that the shoes make the man…I loved the 80s when guys wore British style ska band type shoes. I found this to be irresistibly sexy. On another note, can we have more posts on casual summer dressing? As in cutoffs, sneakers, tank tops, stuff you can wear to the sandbox and picnic that’s really truly not fancy but still looks good? There have been less of these lately and I miss that. Thanks!

    2- adidas stan smith
3- nike waffle racer ( blue)
4- pony topstar low ( black and white)
