That Time I Swapped Heels for High Tops With My Pretty Floral Dress

You probably see a bit of a trend right now on this lovely blog of ours…at least half of the TME team is way into the red floral right now…and for good reason. It’s gorg!

This particular dress is a good example, too. It’s just so fun, pretty, and breezy. It’s nice and cool for this time of year, but will be fun to layer with boots and a moto jacket when the cool weather hits. Aaaaand…it’s on sale. Woo! 40% off with code HOTHOTHOT. How appropriate!

One of my most favorite expressions Shana uses to describe outfits is “not too precious.” I’ll just say I’m ALL ABOUT not too precious. So, when I was pulling this ensemble together and initially had nude heels picked out, something felt very not me. Shoot day came and at the last minute I grabbed these high tops, these trusty high tops. They’re my auto-fix for achieving not too precious. The most leg-lengthening, flattering choice ever? Probably not. But they’re me. And sometimes that’s what matters, y’all.

Age five has been particularly hard, you guys. Whew. The deception, the testing boundaries, the melt-downs, the still-developing emotional intelligence to catch up with the extensive vocabulary—all of these are a special kind of difficult. I know much of it is the anticipation of school starting in the fall, of moving on from her safe preschool space where she’s been since before she turned two.

All everyone talks about to her these days is kindergarten, and I know as excited as she is, it has to be tough to jump ahead into that new place where most everything will be new. Even for my super-extroverted social butterfly it’s going to be a transition. Sometimes I forget that because she loves new experiences and new people so much. We’ve worked through some really less-than-lovely moments over the last few weeks. Yesterday we just gave up and got pedicures. It helped. I need to remember that. Taking a break and having a dance party or doing something fun and out of the norm will give us not only breathing room, but also fun memories. It truly is one day, one moment at a time. And some rosé in the evenings. Lordy.

DressLOFT Summer Blossom Tie Neck Flounce Dress – I’m not sure I’ve ever used the word flounce, but if it means this dress is breezy and comfy, then YES. Love this. I’m wearing size Petite Small here, and it fits great. It’s ever so slightly small in the shoulders if you have wider shoulders, but it’s comfy. I love the fabric, the print and the capped sleeves. I wouldn’t want them any longer. I will say this is a little long even in Petite, but hitting right at the knee is easy to wear and still flattering.

ShoesChuck Taylor All-Star – Definitely my go-to high tops, and like I said, for adding that grunge/rocker vibe to anything too precious. I always go down a 1/2 size in Chucks.

TeeHanna Andersson Sueded Jersey Art Tee – Adorbs. I think I saw Pax has this tee, too. I mean, so cute. Plus, it’s on major sale right now. Runs just a little large.

Skater skirtCat & Jack A-Line Skirt – Soft and cute and has shorts underneath. Runs a little large.

SandalsSalt Water Sandals by Hoy – I adore these for Sienna and get her a pair each summer. They do run large so I usually go down 1 size. We’ve had both navy, and red and gold. All are good. You can’t go wrong, and they can get wet and they just hold up so well. The only drawback is that she can’t buckle them herself yet, so they’re not best for school or situations where you’re taking shoes on and off a lot. But, they’re the cutest.

  1. Bought the Loft dress– it’s so perfect because I needed something that covers my shoulders and knees to visit the Vatican, but still cool because it’s going to be 1000 degrees. I think I’ll skip the high tops because that that heat but they look cute on you.
