Now that winter is officially here, and *most* of us are all shopped out (after all of the holiday madness)…let’s talk about maximizing pieces already in our closets. Specifically, the maxi dress. Warming up a maxi dress for winter is pretty easy — I typically just throw a black turtleneck underneath (and tights) and call it a day. But which coat to wear on top? Because the dress is so long, the proportion has got to be right. Here are the coats that are currently working for me…..
1. A Leather Jacket
It almost doesn’t matter which leather jacket you have, nor which maxi dress you choose: silk, cotton, linen, patterned, solid, whatever — a leather jacket looks good with all of them.

2. A Furry Bomber
I think because bombers typically hit at the waist, the proportions work. And I like how these fleecy, fluffy bombers give off all the casual-luxe vibes. Perfect with a maxi dress.

3. A Military Parka
I love layering military parkas over fancier pieces (I did it with a pretty skirt, last winter). It’s the tough/feminine combo that always just seems to work. And I’m finding that a 3/4 length coat seems to work really well over maxi dresses.

4. The (Menswear-Inspired) Wool Topcoat
Another masculine/feminine combo that just works. The clean lines (and 3/4 length) look so good layered with a pretty, pretty skirt.

5. The Duffle Coat
This one is similar to the wool topcoat above, but the vibe is decidedly different. A duffle coat typically has a casual feel, rather than the sleek polish of a topcoat. But because it’s 3/4 length, the proportions still work. However, I’m not convinced that this coat will look good with a really fancy maxi dress — I think it’s best to stick to the casual ones. I also think this coat will need to be paired with a maxi dress that has a winter-ready feel to it. Perhaps a thicker fabric (linen rather than stretchy jersey or silk) or a bold, dark-ish pattern.

Despite my “rules” about wearing these with maxi dresses, I do love this style of coat. I like that it feels both a little fancy and absolutely casual at the same time.
Know what coat I didn’t include? The floor-length maxi coat. So amazing, so dramatic, would work perfectly with a maxi dress….but also SO MUCH COAT. I’ve literally never had the urge to wear one. If I did….this one by Equipment, maybe? Although It’s probably smarter to start with something affordable (this?), then upgrade if you actually wear it.
