Quick – what’s the fastest way to update your room beside painting the walls? Throw pillows! They’re fun, inexpensive, and easy to change out with the seasons, when you want a new look or when they’re covered in maple syrup #couchbreakfast. Likewise, they’re also a great way to try out trends without dropping a lot of bank. I’m really liking the home decor trends this year, which share some similarities with what’s in style fashion-wise – bold blue, metallics, and geometric patterns (specifically hexagon or honeycomb) are big right now. I found some seriously cool, modern pillows that cover the home decor trends for 2015…get your karate-chopping hand ready!

Bold Blues

Think Mediterranean, Greek, Moroccan, somewhere between royal blue and cobalt – whatever you want to call it, look for big, beautiful blues to liven up neutral sofas or bedding.

watercolor pillow: Ocean Tides Pillow – Love the photo-realistic watercolor with varying shades of deep blue.

tie-dye pillow: Sabina Shibori Euro Sham – Casual, soft oversized shams in the coolest indigo tie-dye.

tassel pillow: Tassels Pillow in Cobalt Blue – A subtler take on the bold blue trend, I love the tassel illustrations.

Metallics

Little shots of glam to fancy up your favorite cozy chair or add a girly touch to your bed. I’d probably keep these away from the littles, washability might be an issue.

silver stripe pillow: Nate Berkus Metallic Mesh Pillow – A petite, pretty little accent. The color says lavender, but reviewers say it’s closer to slate gray.

gold pillow: Solid Metallic Pillow Cover – Mocha Gold – So summery in a shimmery gold linen blend. This would be a great way to introduce metallics in the bedroom without scaring your hubby. Wait, that sounds wrong…

rose gold pillow: Shimmered Malavika Pillow – Definitely ups the girly quotient in any room! The hammered gold and delicate pink colors are amazing together.

Geometrics

Word has it that hexagon is the new chevron. I love how designers play around with the traditional honeycomb pattern to make it modern!

minimalist hexagon pillow: Mint & Black Honeycomb Pillow – This color combination is so sweet for a nursery or kid’s room. Also cool in big people’s spaces, wherever you need a modern, minimalist accent.

slate pillow: Mackinac Pillow – A pretty embroidered print goes masculine in cool slate gray. This would work as a neutral, pair it with bright accents or navy for an upscale look!

raspberry & tan pillow: Acrobat Pillow – Pink – Fun, fun, fun! Love this twist on the standard hexagons, jazzed up with a punchy pink.

Modern Throw Pillows:

Do you guys tend to take chances with easy-to-change accents, like throw pillows, or do you find your decorating style and stick with it? With kids, I find myself wanting to change out throw pillows they use often, like the ones on the couch or storage bench (for obvious reasons)! So I’ll try a color or pattern that doesn’t match other decor in the house or is a little outside my comfort zone because it’s fun to see how much it transforms the look of your room. Have you come across any fabulous pillows lately? Spill!  (And lots of good sales going on!)

  1. Amanda, just catching up on reading Mom Edit after a vacation. This is perfect! I will say that I have two couches that I loathe. L-O-A-T-H-E. They are not really brown, not really gray, not really olive…microsuede. Purchased after our second was born and we got talked into them. What color goes with that??? I’ve tried almost all colors and they look “off”…I keep thinking lighter colors…thoughts? I have OBSESSED over pillows for the past two years.
