Three Ways To Style White Tees + Denim Shorts

This happens every August:  sweaters on the brain, sweat on the skin.  I needed some fresh styling ideas that didn’t involve cashmere, suede leggings or over-the-knee boots.

Go beyond the wool, S.  BEYOND THE WOOL.

So I started messing around with one of my most-worn combos:  white tees + denim shorts.   And based on the response to Scotti’s latest post, many of us are rocking some version of this pairing on the daily.

So here are three ways to style an old favorite, in ways that feel fresh again (even if it’s just recycling old looks I’m certain we’ve all worn before).

Note:  only one of these combos involves my beloved ‘denim underwear’.  The other two looks are with cut-offs of an ever-so-slightly-more-conservative length, haha.

Knotted Tee + White Sneaks + Mens Watch

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but waistlines are majorly on the rise.  I’ve mentioned it before, and this trend, if anything, is only gaining momentum.  I’ve struggled a bit with truly high-rise skinny jeans (mid-rise is easier for me), but one area where the high-rise short really shines is the super short-short.  This style of cut-off makes your legs look miles long.

That said, you don’t necessarily need denim underwear to rock this look.  The key is to knot your tee, then play up the casual-chic vibe with white sneaks and a menswear watch.

Pointy Toe Heels + Graphic Accessories

This is my fav.  Pointy-toe heels feel really modern right now, and I love playing up that vibe with graphic, clean-lined accessories.

This specific pair of pointy-toe heels make me swoon.  I love when a low heel looks sexy (and Sole Society is really good at that), and the block-wood heel is a seriously cool upgrade.

Taupe Booties + Worn Belt + Plaid Scarf

I’m pretty sure we’ve all worn this combo before, but I recently saw iterations of it all over France.   One cool chick paired her plaid scarf with a rocker tee (amazing!), and it feels time to bust it out again.  Besides, the plaid scarf is a nod to Fall, satisfying some of my sweater urges.

Also a nod to Fall?  A dark, smokey eye.  Still too hot/sticky/sweaty for me to mess with it during the day, but at night?  I’m all over it.

Shana founded The Mom Edit in 2008. She lives with the love of her life (his name's Mike) and their two crazy boys in downtown Philadelphia. She loves a good styling challenge (her engineering side shows eventually), appreciates kindness, and usually picks scotch over wine, sneakers over stilettos, and shorts known as denim-underwear, always.

  1. Shana, this is my favorite summer outfit! Can you tell me about the sizing of your Stan Smiths? I’ve been eyeing them for over a year now, but the sizing looks tricky. Some people say go a half size down and others a full size down. Thanks, and I hope to see you all sometime soon! xoxo

  2. Shana, I love the look of shorter shorts and I do wear them regularly but sometimes they just aren’t practical at playgrounds and such. Do you have any ideas of how to sex up the same outfit only with a slightly longer short? I *try* but usually just end up accepting looking frumpy. Ideas?

  3. I cant wait for fall, oh wait, i live in southern California so i love the IDEA of fall 🙂 I really like the scarf with the T and shorts look, it gives a nice nod to fall for sure. And the sleek shoes paired with the casual shorts and t shirt is also great, never even thought to try that. Thanks!

  4. I love the shortime shorts but with teenagers I’ve learned to compromise a bit. One teaspoon is my favorite too!!! I always pair my shorter shorts with a longer 3rd piece. Shorts, band tank or tee, and super light weight long cardigans/kimono/capes. I find this combination allows a little coverage and still sport my style. Definitely not too hot- I live in Texas! Top it off with shell toes, chucks, moto boots, sandals, and even moccasins.

This pic is exactly how I do it!!!

  5. Looking great per usual! Maybe obvious to some, but messy French bun tutorial??!! And as a fellow brunette, how do you get those sweet wavy locks? The humidity this summer has made me a frizzy mess. Is there a product or tool you use, or just genetically superior hair?

  6. I guess I just don’t understand the pointy heel look…love the rest though I’d like to see some examples of making them work with longer shorts. It’s hard to look objectively at yourself & decide if it works for not.

  7. Heads up for those coveting the Julian backpack like I have been… The fringe one, in whiskey, is 50% off at Yessss!
