Hi, I’m Shana and I love going out. I also hate being cold. And these two truths basically explain my almost manic approach to winter weekends: Let’s go out!! Let’s stay in!! No, let’s go out!! No…it’s COLD. STAY IN. OUT! IN! OUT! IN! OUT! IN! HEELS! SWEATPANTS! HEELS! SWEATPANTS! HEELS!
I am exhausting. Just ask my husband. (Or really, any of our friends).
So. Whether you are gearing up for a holiday party, NYE, or just feel like being fancy yet must be warm…this one’s for you.
Option 1: A Bodycon Dress With Longsleeves
I like bodycon dresses because they layer so well. Throw an oversized black turtleneck over top, add heels and sparkly accessories and you are good to go. If you really hate the cold, add tights. But because the look is meant to be sexy, I prefer tights with a little sheerness to them. (They’re still warm. Promise.)
Outfit Details
Dress: Reformation (wearing a small for reference) – This dress runs small, so size up. I love how soft and comfortable this dress is to wear, and how dramatic the slit is. You can see me walking around in this one on my IG stories (@shanachristine) – I saved it under “Outfits”.
Sweater: Treasure and Bond Turtleneck Sweater – I LOVE this thing. It’s oversized, and not cashmere, so it’s not as insanely warm as others, but the slouch is just right. And hard to beat for only $79.
Tights: Wolford – These are my favs, they literally last for years. My only beef is that I’d like a higher rise pair. Or maybe just these sparkly rhinestone tights OMG.
Boots: Jeffrey Campbell Siren Booties (also available at Amazon) – I love the shape and fabric of these boots. They’re neoprene, so they’re super comfortable against your skin, even without socks. The heel is high, but surprisingly walkable, and the pointy toe means they look cute peeking out of flares. (The longer shaft means they work well with cropped jeans, too.)
Bag: Clare V. Chou Chou Studded Pouchette – This was an early Christmas present to mah-self. Picked it up during the Black Fridays sales, and it’s been worth every cent. You’ll see me carrying this one for years.
Earrings: B.P. Molten Metal Drop Earrings – These are insanely lightweight and pack a punch! Under $20. I’m also loving these Molten Fringe Earrings by Halogen, (in case the drop earrings sell out).
Option 2: Layer A Sequin Dress Over a Turtleneck
This has been my go-to for years. And if it’s really cold, add some over-the-knee boots. I love a leather or faux-fur jacket with this look, but you could always wear your long black puffer and then — VOILA!!! — unveil yourself dramatically.
Outfit Details
Dress: Free People Sequin Dress – I’m obsessed with this little dress. It’s under $100, looks cute layered over turtlenecks or t-shirts, and is basically perfect for NYE. (More colors available here)
Turtleneck: Old layering turtleneck – try J.Crew’s Tissue Turtleneck (one of my favs)
Tights: Wolford – These are my favs, they literally last for years. My only beef is that I’d like a higher rise pair.
Boots: Stuart Weitzman – Some of my most-worn boots EVER. I basically live in these things all winter.
Bag: Similar Style – More like a pet than a bag. But I love it so.
Earrings: B.P. Molten Metal Drop Earrings – These are insanely lightweight and pack a punch! Under $20. I’m also loving these Molten Fringe Earrings by Halogen, (in case the drop earrings sell out). Also, these J.Crew ones are similar.
Option 3: Statement Pants and Socks With Heels
I could’ve titled this one: Yet Another Way To Dress Up Turtlenecks, but I’m trying to hide my crazy for the new people. (Hi! Welcome to The Mom Edit! We’re TOTALLY NORMAL…)
But speaking of crazy…I am wearing socks with my open-toe sandals. Since I just got an email from a reader about this very topic, allow me to make a stand: I like it. My black SmartWool socks are thin enough, and the silver Rebecca Minkoff heels are chunky enough that together? They’re like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong. As shoo-bop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom, chang chang changitty chang sha-bop.
That’s the way it should be.
And just so we’re clear, I like my metals mixed.
If you’d rather not be stuck in a turtleneck all night, layer a silk cami over a t-shirt.
Outfit Details
tee: James Perse (xs) – My favorite tee for layering under camis. It’s lightweight and a tiiiiny bit sheer.
cami: Cami NYC Racerback Cami (xs) – I know these are pricy, but I wear the heck out of mine. I even machine wash them (on cold, hang to dry). I layer these under sweaters almost daily.
Sweater: Treasure and Bond Turtleneck Sweater – I LOVE this thing. It’s oversized, and not cashmere, so it’s not as insanely warm as others, but the slouch is just right. And hard to beat for only $79.
Jeans: AG Farrah Metallic Jeans (size 25) – How fun are these? So very rockstar to wear (and not as crazy as it seems, especially with a turtleneck).
Heels: Rebecca Minkoff – Obsessed with these heels. I love the lower, walkable heel and chunky shape. They’re substantial enough to work with socks.
Socks: SmartWool – My longtime favs.
Bag: Similar Style
Earrings: B.P. Molten Metal Drop Earrings – These are insanely lightweight and pack a punch! Under $20. I’m also loving these Molten Fringe Earrings by Halogen, (in case the drop earrings sell out).
Shop My Favorite Long-Sleeve, Bodycon Dresses
To make it on this list, the dress had to be not only long-sleeved and bodycon, but also something that would easily fit underneath a sweater. AND it had to be pretty enough (or cool enough or dramatic enough) to stand alone, too.
Shop My Favorite Sequin Dresses Under $100
I like to keep the cost-per-wear pretty low, and sequins, admittedly, don’t come out to play very often. So…given the number of cute sequin dresses under $100, why bother looking at anything else? I picked the ones that I thought would look especially cute layered over a black turtleneck (or white tee), and would work with either OTK boots or sock booties.
Shop My Favorite Statement Pants
I found pants in wide range of dressiness, but they’ll all pair nicely with a turtleneck and sparkly accessories for a solid night-out look.
So that’s it! That’s what I’ve got for you this year. One of these outfits will be my NYE look, I just can’t decide which one. And 10 points to Gryffindor if anyone gets my movie reference. (HA! It was easy – somebody BETTER.)
xo,
S
Uhhh, yeah. It’s Grease for the win. Unless you mean the HP reference in your challenge question? 🙂
Ooooo…you are GOOD. 🙂
Is the black sweater a small or xs? Love alllll these looks!
Size small!! It does run big…not sure why I picked that size, but it totally works!
So beautiful and SO fun! Option 2 is my cup of sassy but 3 with the tee and silver shoes is some fabulous that can’t be overlooked! HNY S and TME! Have fun…no doubt you will look cool, chic and sparkly! : )
Thank you!!! These WERE really fun to wear. My final decision will likely depend on the weather….in MICHIGAN. WE WILL SEE. 🙂
I don’t know how you always do this, but you always manage to find the exact ouftits I’d want to wear myself. Not too precious, very cozy and comfortable (win!), and with lots of edge. LOVEEEEE.
Oh man, this was so nice to read. Thank you for taking the time to send love!! (Especially during this crazy time of year.) xoxo
Every year your winter posts make me so glad I live in California. It might dip down below 60 degrees or maybe rain! I still like to be warm, these are good ideas!
This time of year, I’m always hoping for snow. But then by March, I want it GONE. 🙂
Love these ideas! Except maybe the socks and sandals, but…to each his own! Those silver pants are amazing, though! Also, the Leith dress with the ruching that everyone wears all summer is available in a long sleeve version AND it’s currently on sale for $23!!! I got it in black yesterday! Winning!!! Happy holidays to all!

You can rock out just about anything. But the wool socks …. don’t work. And if you can make them work, NOBODY can
Love all of these looks! Though you could make a potato sack look cool and chic. I am digging the socks and sandals, and adore the sequins dress over the turtleneck!
Love all of these looks so much! The second is my favorite but all 3 are great!
