How to Wear Pantone’s Colors of The Year

 pantone 2016 styled.001

You guys might have noticed that I love color. It’s been a life-long affair that permeates into all areas of my life. From hoarding boxes of paint samples to markers in every color of the rainbow (and once painting every paintable piece of furniture and the walls of my apartment mint green)…like a moth to the flame I’m drawn to the bright, vibrant and different.

So needless to say when Pantone came out with their new colors for 2016 I was prrretty excited and told Shana my idea for a Pantone color inspired post. Her response was trademark Shana:

“Can you do it without looking like an Easter Egg?”

Challenge accepted. if worst came to worst, I would try to be the most understated Pantone colored easter egg in the yard.  Keep reading for three styling tips that worked for me:

1. Anchor With Black

This is a no-brainer, but it works.  A pop of black amongst all of that gorgeous, watercolor pastel just helps them pop.  (And truthfully, a rose quartz pedicure with some serenity blue sandals might be all you need, if you aren’t as color-crazed as I.)

2. Throw In An Unexpected Color

There’s no good reason adding rust orange to the mix should work, but it totally does.  Know what else I’d try?  Hunter green, olive, mustard yellow or slate.

tank: I picked up this tank last year at H&M, but they currently have a similar rust colored satin cami with lace for $24.99. Another option is Free People’s Deep V Bandeau Cami in Earth Red for $58.00.

blazer: Oasis Pink Button Front Blazer available at ASOS for $110.00.

jeans:‘Kimmie’ Crop Skinny Jeans by 7 for All Mankind at Nordstroms for $189.00.

shoes: STEVEN by Steve Madden Voomme Ankle-Strap Block Heel Dress Sandals in Blue Suede at Macy’s on sale for $94.00.

3. Balance With Camel (or a Rich Tan)

Amazing how the key to not looking like an easter egg seems to stem from using a warmer tone.  Adding a camel bag, belt, or shoe gives this outfit a cool vibe, rather than something overly precious (which I think it what Shana was trying to avoid with her ‘easter egg’ comment).  Also, sneaks never hurt.

  1. Beautiful job, Jess. This may just be my favorite collection by you.

As for the rust cami, I’m starting to try to mix items I don’t think will work. If I take a look in a mirror, especially if my head is cut off, I sometimes find they work. You guys have been my experimentation motivators.

  2. I love that pink polish with those blue shoes!! Are they comfy to spend a day walking in or more just look pretty?

    • Hey Yvonne and thank you! You know honestly, they aren’t that bad to walk in.. BUT having said that, they definitely aren’t comfortable enough for me to wear for a day of walking. The heel height is low enough and the helps significantly and they are much more comfortable once they’ve been broken in.

  3. That rust cami is my favorite! You so don’t look easter eggish! 🙂 I think I’ll be on the lookout for a rust colored tank now! Thanks for the inspo!

  4. Rose Quartz & Serenity, such peaceful & vibrant colors at the same time! Love this post, your thoughts of anchoring w/black are amazing. And work so well! Love, love love…. I am checking out these links – thank you so much!!

  5. I don’t have a lot of these colors in my wardrobe, but it’s forced me to get very creative! Has been fun for the last couple of days.

    • so glad you’ve joined the pink and blue side Hope! I never in a million years thought I would love wearing pink so much.
