To me, summer is all about playing in the water and sunshine during the day, and sitting around a campfire at night; wearing nothing but a swimsuit all day and throwing on some cut-offs and a light sweater when the sun starts to set.

Cool Comfort: Sweaters Perfect For Summer

These are my favorite shorts from last summer (I’m still loving them this year because they fit curvy bodies really well). Right now I’m pairing them with either this beach sweater or this cotton-linen crewneck when the temperature starts to dip after a warm day in the sun.

They’re both lightweight and made of natural fibers (linen and cotton as opposed to synthetics), so they don’t make you overheat when the temps are higher. (In fact, wearing one of these was actually cooler than a 50% polyester t-shirt…my mom is right about breathable fabrics!)

J. Crew Linen Crewneck Beach Sweater

One reviewer said this sweater was like “wearing a vacation” and I think those are probably the best words to describe it. The fit is oversized, but I didn’t size down at all because I like that slightly slouchy vibe. The neckline is nice and wide (you can wear it slightly off the shoulder if you don’t size down) and I love the open stitching. It’s made of linen, is machine-washable, and I love it so much I’m thinking of ordering it in that fun bright papaya color (I mean, it is on sale right now…).

Everlane Cotton-Linen Crewneck Sweater

This sweater is a bit boxier than J. Crew’s and has that same lightweight, breathable feel. It’s great for pairing with high-waisted bottoms since it’s a shorter (but not cropped) length. I love the texture of the cotton-linen blend. Care instructions say hand-wash, but I just wash it on the gentle cycle and lay it flat to dry.

  1. The J. Crew sweater is so so good! I ordered it in the flax color when you first posted it and wore it for three days straight at the shore this weekend. As soon as my sister in law saw it, she ordered it, too! I’m thinking about ordering it in white because I love it so much! Thanks for sharing it!

    • Ahhhh you guys, we’re REALLY struggling with this one. While we are obviously VERY concerned about the experiences of the ex wives club (the IG account from former Everlane employees) we also suspect that – sadly – experiences like this aren’t unique to Everlane. We live in a racist society, so we suspect that many other retailers have similar stories (many of which have already started to come out) — and we acknowledge this is not OK. That said, we also understand that this process of reckoning IS the right path, and we welcome these stories. But as always, The Mom Edit trusts their readers to make their own decisions on where to shop. And at the moment, if we stop covering Everlane, where else do we turn to highlight these types of affordable pieces – many of them sustainable? Is Amazon better? Is Walmart? Is Old Navy? Gap? We are definitely paying attention…just still thinking about this one (and yes, we’ve reached out to our Everlane contacts to state our concerns). The best result is that Everlane – quickly – makes some dramatic changes that result in meaningful long-term change. (And as a side note, I do encourage you guys to email Everlane directly.)
