Can a Slip Dress + T-shirt be Nursing Friendly to Wear?

I’ve been eyeing the slip dress + t-shirt trend for a while thinking that I can’t just wear it while nursing. To be honest, I’ve really gotten super upset about it because it’s a look I totally love. The t-shirt makes the dress super casual and totally wearable for a day with the kids. Unfortunately, when you have to get your boob out constantly to feed a baby it becomes really impossible to wear it.

But then on a random day, a light bulb turned on. I guess my brain still works when I’m not so sleep deprived and over stimulated by motherhood #momlife. Anyway, I remembered I had tried this trend while pregnant by doing a quick twist. You know maternity t-shirts tend to either have gathering or be loose from the waist down, right? That doesn’t look too pretty with a slip dress on top. So what I did was to wear a super cropped top under it and it worked. I got the look I wanted without extra fabric in my belly.

What I didn’t think when I did that twist was that it was perfect for nursing.

Strap down, top up and breastaurant is open for service!!! To say that I love it is an understatement. I was ecstatic to finally be able to wear a tee under a dress. Additionally, I think it works whether you’re nursing or not for a cleaner look.

If you are nursing like me I think there’s two important factors to keep in mind:

  • I only looked for slip dresses with a deep v-neck.
  • It’s better when the t-shirt is fitted and very cropped.

Done for the day with the kids? I took the tee off and wore my favorite heeled sandals for a date night. (not on the same day though…I don’t think I could have gone all day without getting some spit up on it)

Outfit Details

Dress – c/o Everlane  (or short version) It comes in black, white, pink and mint. I thought this fabric was going to be untouchable and super delicate because it has a silky drape but it’s not. I also thought it would show all my bumps and lumps but it does not! This dress is made with triacetate (Japanese fabric) which is crease resistant and cooling. It holds up really well throughout the day, nursing sessions and mom stuff. For washing it says hand wash but I’ve been washing all my delicate clothing in the machine in the hand wash cycle. Machine hand-wash? I hope that’s what they mean by hand wash. I already washed it a few times and is intact.

Tee – Vialumi crew neck tee – found it on Amazon and it’s great for layering not only under dresses but also camisole tops. %100 cotton. If you want a white one I just came across this one.

Sandals – Caslon Gilda – They come in mustard, a red orange, walnut and black. If you’re in between sizes I recommend sizing down. They are really comfy and cute.

Heeled sandals – Dolce Vita (similar) Did I mention they are on sale?

Necklace – recreate it with this delicate choker and this long necklace (almost identical to mine)

Bag – Vince Camuto (similar) Same brand as mine

After my oldest was born, I found myself wearing my old tank tops and yoga pants everyday. I had a ton of unworn clothes in the back of my closet and had a little voice in my head saying “why look nice if you’re going to be home nursing a baby around the clock?” Now, after change of mindset, I apply my fashion design studies to my everyday craziness and document the things I try here on The Mom Edit and my own blog The Unbosom.
If you can’t find me in the bathroom hiding from my kids, I’ll be on Facebook or Instagram @theunbosom begging for bedtime!

    • I hope you try it! I totally understand. Same happened to me the first time, but this time I’ve been getting more creative and willing to try more things.

  1. Is this trend back?!? I remember rocking this in middle school (so no worries about nursing). What a great outfit hack.

  2. That dress is amazing! I’ve never bought anything from Everlane, any tips on sizing? And how do I decide what color?!?! Black is a staple in my closet, but the mint or pink are calling my name.

    • It truly is. I didn’t think I would love it so much. I’m wearing a 0 and didn’t go for the 2 because I didn’t want it to be longer. I’m 5′ 2″ and weigh between 117-120 (haven’t checked my weight in months) Regarding color I almost went for the black one but same happened to me. The mint and pink were calling my name and I’m glad I went for that color. It’s gorgeous….but between us I think I’m going to get the black one too. You know about the saying “when you find something you love, get it in more than one color” LOL…Was this of any help?
