I may be in my 8th month of pregnancy, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to forego my favorite sale of the year – skinny jeans be damned!  This year I’m focusing on finding figure-flattering, nursing-friendly, comfortable options that I can wear in that awkward postpartum transition time.  Think comfy shoes, soft sweaters, stretchy denim and fun coats to wear in our cooler-than-most climate.  And, yes, most of my options are always budget-friendly!

1. Start With this Fuzzy Coat

When I saw this coat I was so excited (even more so when I saw the price).  This is like the perfect cardigan/coat hybrid that can be worn with everything from jeans to dresses and leggings.  The Vince hoodie may be sold out, but this one is still available in all sizes for a fraction of the cost.

Outfit 1: Jacket â€“ XS | top â€“ M | jeans â€“ 4P | shoes â€“ TTS
Outfit 2: Jacket â€“ XS |top â€“ S/M | jeans â€“ 28P | shoes â€“ TTS
Outfit 3: Jacket â€“ XS | dress  – S | shoes â€“ TTS

2. Update Your Fall Uniform: Skinny jeans + a Cute Sweater

In my case, the sweaters have to be nursing-friendly and flattering for a postpartum belly.  Fortunately, there are a ton of options that work regardless of if you’re nursing or not.

A. With Over-the-Knee Boots

Outfit 1:Jeans â€“ 6P | Sweater â€“ S | Boots â€“ TTS
Outfit 2: Jeans â€“ 6P | Sweatshirt â€“ S | Boots â€“ TTS
Sweatshirt: (S) I can’t deny the comfort of this fleece top . . . Perfect for hiding a post partum belly and for nursing.  I love that you can easily dress it up or down.  (Click on link for different ways to wear it).

Sweater: (S) Love the extra length on this sweater.  It’ll be great for nursing (easy to pull down) and I also love the burgundy color! (Check back for colors and sizes if they’re sold out!)

Jeans: (6P) I tried these jeans in both the regular and petite and liked the petites better (both in length and rise).  I also like the dark rinse and perfect amount of stretch.

Boots: (8, tts) These actually surprised me as being more comfortable than I thought they’d be.  There was more cushion on the sole than I expected and I love the shape of the pointy toe.  Walkable heel for the win.

B. With Studded Loafers

Because sometimes you just want something to slip on and go.

Outfit: Jeans â€“ 6P |Sweater â€“ S | Studded Loafers â€“ Run 1/2 size big
Sweater: (S) Also in grey or coral, I was thinking this would be a perfect nursing sweater.  It’s soft . . . but was really hard to tell what it would look like without my giant belly.  (Although it seemed to run big . . . even with the belly I should have gotten an XS.) Loved it on the model . . . has anyone else tried this one??

Jeans: (6P) I tried these jeans in both the regular and petite and liked the petites better (both in length and rise).  I also like the dark rinse and perfect amount of stretch.

Studded Loafers: (7.5, run just a tad big) Most loafers I try on are super stiff and rub the back of my ankle . . . these are soft and conform to your foot.  Love the stud detail!

3. Add a Cardigan

A. To a simple all-black outfit (add fun shoes)

Outfit 1:Jeans â€“ 4P |top â€“ S/M |Cardigan â€“ S |Shoes â€“ TTS
Outfit 2:Jeans â€“ 4P |top â€“ S/M |Jacket â€“ XS |Shoes â€“ TTS
Pink Cardigan: (small) I was hesitant about this cardigan because I really didn’t like the pic online . . . but I like it in person!  Also in cream, navy and dark moss, this is a soft and comfy cardigan that’s the perfect length.

Jeans: (4P) I really like these. Stretchy and soft but thicker than typical leggings.  I definitely like the the petite length better on me (I’m 5’4″).

Shoes: (7.5, tts) These are super comfortable thanks to a memory foam insole and also come in black and a metallic taupe.  LOVE.

Top: (S/M) I wore this with a lot of my outfits.  It’s thin and smooth and comfortable . . . basically a perfect layering piece.  The v-neck can be higher or lower depending on what kind of bra you wear, and I loved the length . . . perfect for wearing over leggings!

Jacket: (XS) So ridiculously soft . . . the stretchy panels on the inner arms help to make it more comfortable so you can move around in it.  Also in black or merlot.

B. To a Dress

BODYCON MIDI

Outfit 1:Dress â€“ S |Cardigan â€“ XS |Boots â€“ TTS
Outfit 2:Dress â€“ S | Boots â€“ TTS
Dress: (S) I died laughing at how different this looks on Shana and I.  So . . . this is a ridiculously comfortable dress that’s perfect for maternity (even though it’s not).  I like the fabric – none of the sweaters I tried on with it shedded on it!

Boots: (8, tts) I’m ALWAYS on the lookout for cute shoes that can be worn in wet weather.  These fit the bill for sure . . . I liked the length and tightness of the shaft (say that out loud without laughing) and the shorter, walkable heel.

Cardigan: (XS regular) I was expecting this to be itchy but it was really soft.  Love the longer length (although it is available in petite).

SHIFT DRESS

Outfit 1:Dress â€“ S |Jacket â€“ XS |Shoes â€“ TTS
Outfit 2:Dress â€“ S |Jacket â€“ XS | Shoes â€“ TTS
Outfit 3: Dress – S |Shoes â€“ TTS
Dress: (S) I threw this in my shopping bag on a whim and am glad I did.  This will be great for nursing and looks good alone or over leggings.  (Also in white and black.)

Jacket: (XS regular) Available in a ton of colors and regular or petite sizes, this is another soft jacket/sweatshirt hybrid that’s super comfy.  (I think I like it both zipped and unzipped which is hard to find in a longer jacket like this.)

Shoes: (7.5) LOVE.  Comfy due to a shorter heel (2 1/4) and memory foam insole.  So glad I got these.

4. Swap out the Cardigan for a Structured Blazer

Outfit: Jeans â€“ 28R | Top – S/M |Blazer â€“ XS | Boots â€“ TTS

Blazer: (XS) Sold out, but keep checking back as inventory constantly fluctuates throughout the sale!  Love the longer length and the fact that it feels like a sweater instead of a stiff blazer. (Similar in charcoal grey here.)

Jeans: (28R) I tried these in both the 28P and 28R . . . the petites were not cute.  They were at an awkward too-short length.  These have less stretch than the other jeans I chose but I like the wash and fit in general.

Boots: (8, tts) I have these in black and LOVE them, so as soon as I saw these were a part of the sale I made sure to grab them ASAP.  Love that they’re stretchy so they’re tight around the ankles without rubbing against your skin.

Top: (S/M) I wore this with a lot of my outfits.  It’s thin and smooth and comfortable . . . basically a perfect layering piece.  The v-neck can be higher or lower depending on what kind of bra you wear, and I loved the length . . . perfect for wearing over leggings!

5. Add Some Fancy Pieces

A. A Low-cut Top

Outfit: Printed Top â€“ M |Jeans â€“ 6R |Shoes â€“ TTS

Printed Top: (M) LOVE this . . . I couldn’t tell from pics online, but it hangs straight instead of tapering in.  This will be perfect for post partum and nursing!

Jeans: (6R) These were obviously longer on me than the model, but I think the regular was actually a good length for me.  Soft, stretchy and comfy (extra stretch in the waist).

Shoes: I love the shape of these shoes, but the back strap didn’t stay up on me (no shoes like this do, but I thought I’d chance it).  I LOVE the lilac color.

B. A Flowy Tunic Dress

Outfit 1: Jacket â€“ XS | dress  – S | shoes â€“ TTS

Outfit 2: dress  – S | shoes â€“ TTS

Free People Top: (S) Ok, so take my word for it that these Free People flowy tops are ahhhh-mazing.  They look much better when you aren’t in your third trimester.  This will actually be great for hiding a post partum belly and for nursing. (Love the dark navy color.)

Boots: (8, tts) These actually surprised me as being more comfortable than I thought they’d be.  There was more cushion on the sole than I expected and I love the shape of the pointy toe.  Walkable heel for the win.

Furry Coat: (XS) Can you tell how much I love this furry coat?? It feels more like an oversize cardigan than coat and I’m going to be wearing it with EVERYTHING this fall.

6. If All Else Fails, Stick to Comfy Basics

A. The Softest Cardigan I’ve Ever Worn

Outfit:Jeans â€“ 28R |Top – S/M |Cardigan â€“ XS/S | Boots â€“ TTS

Top: (S/M) I wore this with a lot of my outfits.  It’s thin and smooth and comfortable . . . basically a perfect layering piece.  The v-neck can be higher or lower depending on what kind of bra you wear, and I loved the length . . . perfect for wearing over leggings!

Cardigan: (XS/S) I know how ridiculously soft and comfy Barefoot Dreams fabrics are, so when they’re on sale I jump on them!  Also in charcoal grey and cream, my mom wanted to order this one as soon as she felt it!

Jeans: I tried these in 28 regular and petite – these are the regular, but I didn’t like them as much as the petite in both the length and rise.  But I did love the 28P – they didn’t bunch up like you see in this pic.

Boots: (8) I had a pair of Born boots that lasted YEARS and were super comfy to walk in.  These have a cushioned footbed with arch support and a removable cushioned insole.  And the heel is 1 1/2″ for just the littlest bit of height!

B. The Perfect Postpartum Nursing-Friendly Top

Outfit: Jeans â€“ 28R (run big) |Top – S |Shoes â€“ TTS

Top: (S) Available in a ton of colors, the fabric is stretchy and thicker than I expected.  Perfect for post partum and nursing, I might need to grab another color before the sale’s over!

Jeans: (28) These run big because even with my third-trimester belly I was able to zip them no problem.  They’re super soft and stretchy and feel like leggings.

Shoes: (7.5) LOVE.  Comfy due to a shorter heel (2 1/4) and memory foam insole.  So glad I got these.

C. The Comfiest Boots Ever.

Outfit: Jeans â€“ 4P | Top – S/M |Sweatshirt â€“ S | Boots â€“ TTS

Boots: If you live where I do, you want a nice comfy cozy pair of these boots for the winter.  I love the bow detail on these.  Also in chesnut, grey and port.

Sweatshirt: (S) I can’t deny the comfort of this fleece top . . . Perfect for hiding a post partum belly and for nursing.  I love that you can easily dress it up or down.  (Click on link for different ways to wear it).

Top: (S/M) I wore this with a lot of my outfits.  It’s thin and smooth and comfortable . . . basically a perfect layering piece.  The v-neck can be higher or lower depending on what kind of bra you wear, and I loved the length . . . perfect for wearing over leggings!

Jeans: (4P) I really like these. Stretchy and soft but thicker than typical leggings.  I definitely like the the petite length better on me (I’m 5’4″).

  1. Scotti not sure how you manage to still make EVERY outfit look stunning with a dash of sexy even in your third trimester but you did!! Im not expecting, looking for post partum, or in need of nursing friendly outfits so I almost skipped your post, SO glad I didnt! Thank you for taking the time to discuss each piece and telling us why you loved it and how it fit/felt/wore. I added so much to my cart- I think I have to have that all weather Aquatalia bootie in brown, its gorgeous but I didnt want to spend $300 on just another bootie and was resisting it until I saw it actually on you with a dress no less, dang it

  2. Thanks for that thorough review! The link to the blazer (that you said is sold out in xs) does not work…it goes to a pair of shoes. Do you have the correct link to the blazer? Thank you.
