2019 Fall Color Trends

Ooh, a color post. I always get super excited for these and especially in the fall. Color is my jam and fall is my jam, and I could go on and on about both. I could look at color combos all day long and be quite happy. But, sometimes color can be a little overwhelming to translate into actual looks when you have a closet full of neutrals, so I wanted to pull together a few inspiration outfits to help with that.

Is anything more exciting than fall fashion?! Maybe, but right now, we're all about fall trends — fall color trends that is. Goldenrod, rust, ivory...YES.

Easily combine some of these gorgeous shades by starting with a neutral or two, and adding in a bright pop. If you’re going to go with more than one bright color, which can be trickier to do, stick to only two and rely on black or gray or nude shoes, bag and accessories, as a general rule. But we all know rules are made to be broken, too…so if color-mixing stresses you out, this might be a helpful plan!

My favorite places to find fabulous, spot-on colorful pieces (surprise, I’m picky) are Boden, Everlane, & Other Stories, Topshop & Banana Republic. I have noticed that, of course, even ready-to-wear brands pay attention to color trends and offer at least a few shades from the list each year. It seems UK brands really prioritize this and get just the right shades in their fabrics.

Favorite Fall Color Combos & Outfit Inspiration

Goldenrod, Blue & Ivory

Well, this one was unintentional, but one of my latest outfits just happened to include three of the fall shades! Thanks, Everlane. They offer rich yet often washed or over-dyed versions of the bold colors which are definitely a bit easier to wear for everyday.

Jacket (s) // Sweater (s) // Pants (4)

Navy, Blue & Rust

This combo is just gorgeous and easily translatable to work. If you have a blue top and navy pants, pull in a great orange bag or shoe or sweater, or go full-in and grab one of the amazing coats I’ve linked! It’ll be a rad statement piece all winter and fall, and coordinates with more in your closet than you might realize. It’s surprisingly good with gray.

Red, Burgundy & Ivory

This combo is KILLER. Red and burgundy are always unexpected but always WOW. I’d pull in an ivory bag or even a leather jacket to this combo, but you don’t necessarily need it. This combo also works for the holidays without screaming ‘holidays.’ And a gorgeous ivory wool coat on top would be amazing.

These outfits are amazing. I am in love with the red and burgundy combo! So cool! Also, those red slouch boots are speaking to my soul. They’re gorgeous! This post is so much fun and I would definitely like to see more of the emeralds/greens!

  2. Agree on the emerald green! Also, any idea where the coat in the top left picture under More Eye Candy Inspo came from?

  3. Love this! Great fall color combo inspiration especially coming from you… (no black?!? just kidding) I love Fall and these deep hues.

  4. I wish I had learned about the importance of understanding color a long time ago. It would have saved me a lot of time and money. Now approaching my 50s, I finally know that I look way better in cool, saturated shades. Hm, there was a reason after all why, as much as I loved my muted olive green army jackets, I looked rather sickly wearing them. Now shopping is so much easier, I buy far less, and am happier with what I do have. For me, the burgundy and cherry red combo speaks, as does the deep forest green, since those are great colors on me. All the rust and mustard yellow and orangey brown not so much. I express my love for such admittedly gorgeous (but not for me) warm tones in places other than my wardrobe 🙂 Thanks for the post!

  5. I love the red/burgundy combo so much; I’ve been counting the days until the weather gets cool wear it. I first noticed it when watching HBO’s Chernobyl (of all places) and I’ve been searching for inspiration looks ever since. Thanks for the post!
