My favorite Uniqlo down coat and the fabulous Boden knee-length puffer are BOTH back in stock, and have BOTH been updated for 2019!! — YES, I am this excited (imagine how I’ll feel about my next coatigan post). They were super-popular with readers last year, but sold out in several colors, so act fast if you’re interested! Eight color options in the Uniqlo puffer, in addition to three different lengths (fully stocked as of today) AND three fabulous color options in the Boden puffer (also fully stocked as of today). I updated all the links from last year’s post HERE.

The Search For The Perfect Puffer — A Review
If you didn’t see last year’s puffer try-on sesh last year, you can revisit the whole saga here. Briefly: I had been searching for the perfect puffer coat for six years. I wanted: lightweight, not too constricting, nice lines that don’t make me look like a giant marshmallow…warm (of course), covers my tush, and most importantly, something fun…interesting…with some sort of oomph.
Two winters ago, I gave up my search for the perfect puffer and bought what I thought (at the time) was the most boring coat ever from Uniqlo. It’s super-comfy, has a pretty great matte finish, nice lines, and is a perfect neutral for all the pops of color I like to add. Ever since, I’ve been wearing it with #brightcolorfulhats, lots of fun bags and statement sunglasses, too. AND — I keep getting compliments on my very basic (dare I say a bit boring?) coat.

Boden vs. Uniqlo: The Details
THEN, last year I thought I FINALLY found the perfect puffer I’d been searching for. Boden released a great puffer with contrasting trim, detailed cuff sleeves, fun racer stripes, AND a contrasting faux-fur hood lining. I ended up, however, taking reader advice and decided it wasn’t quite THE perfect coat for me after all. The color was a little too muted, and I didn’t love the stripe down the back.
THIS year, however, Boden came out with a brighter bolder green (much more my vibe) with no stripes at all (totally fine by me) and a bit more fitted instead of straight cut (also better for me). Very tempting!
So…if you’re looking for something a bit more classic, Uniqlo has ALL eight colors in stock (but beware navy and black sold out super-fast the past two years), and if you’re looking for something with a little more zing, Boden ALSO made a couple great updates on their already good puffer. Here are some of the update details:
Updates To The Uniqlo Seamless Down Coat
- Front zipper is now hidden for a sleeker look
- The longer down coat now has the same hidden hood adjusters as the short coat.
- All 8 colors are in stock …woohoo! My new fav is the dark green on the left–it’s REALLY pretty in person.

Updates To The Boden Cavell Puffer Coat
- Semi-fitted instead of straight fit
- Added internal pocket
- Officially shower resistant
- No grosgain tape stripe
- New fabulous colors — I LOVE the green, but my fav actually might be the the black with yellow.
More Puffers Coats I’m Drooling Over
I’m of course drawn to the bolder or more unique colors, but almost all of them are available in black and/or navy as well.
Who has a favorite puffer that I didn’t include? Shout it out…I love the suggestions!

Got the green Uniqlo in the mail yesterday. I am usually a medium and went up to a large b/c I wear 5 million layers but I think i could have gotten away with a med. but the color is AWESOME. goes with black and navy which I love
Yay! I love the green color too (especially in person). I totally agree…it looks really good with almost every color.
I love S13 puffers. Very warm and stylish!
Oooh–fun! I like the metallics! Thanks for sharing, Joanne.
I bought something similar to this EB one last season and love it. They have tall sizing which is a must in coats for me (5’ 11’ with long arms) and a two way zipper.

So pretty! I sometimes forget how challenging it must for you fabulously tall ladies when you need something (like a coat) to fit just right. Glad you found something that works and thank you for the suggestion for other tall TME readers.
Love this round-up – thank you! Could you please add the prices in the thumbnails next time? 🙂
Sure thing.
I also miss visible prices!
I agree with the visible pricing because I technically live in a warm climate (southern CA), but am always cold. I want the most bang for my buck in the puffer department. I’m not messing with rain or snow, so really any puffer in the budget category that TME recommends would work for me. I just don’t want to have to click through on every item to find out the cost.
Hi Christa–thanks for the feedback! I’m working on another winter coat post that should come out “soon-ish” and it includes some good budget friendly options. I really like Uniqlo’s packable and lightweight line …that might be a good option for California. Have you tried any of those?
I love my LL Bean ultra light down coat. I bought the long one, but they have a mid-thigh one, too. So much warmer than one my Patagonia coat that sheds feathers all over me. And it magically allows me to layer under it (such as a fleece AND a puffer vest) without needing to size up or look like the Stay-Puft marshmallow woman. And it packs down pretty small if you want to shove it in your carryon.
