Last year I had come across a pair of sweater pants at Anthropologie. I tried them on, snapped a pic, and…left them there. They sold out completely a few days later and that was that.

Of course, those darn pants became The Ones That Got Away, and I thought of them — longingly — through the rest of the holiday season: on the plane, at Thanksgiving dinner, on certain cold days when I had to go out, but would much rather stay in clad in sweatpants & cozy sweaters….

That’s the thing with sweater pants: they feel like sweatpants, but have a certain level of polish that sweatpants lack. But I’m very firm on one point: I want sweater pants that look like trousers….not joggers. This is key.

So this year, as soon as November rolled around, I immediately checked to see if Anthro had brought back the sweater pants/trousers that have been haunting my dreams. And YES. Not only did they bring back the original pair, but there are a few additional options to choose from.

I picked two.

Keep reading to see how I styled them up for a day of travel…AND how I’d dress them up for Thanksgiving dinner. (Pssst…when you’re done with this one, head over to our Holiday Style Central for more outfit ideas and party inspo.)

Full-Length Sweater Pants, 2 Outfits

These are really just standard black pants…but in a sneaky sweater knit. They’re high-rise, wildly comfortable, and are my favorite thing to wear right now. Because I’m always cold, I appreciate that they’re not cropped.

sweater: Athleta Canyon Colorblock Sweater (xs) – I’m obsessed with this merino wool sweater. Cute enough to wear for everyday, but would also work for hiking or skiing, too. Also in a gray with bright blue arm stripes.

pants: Chiara Knit Bootcut Trousers (xs petite) – The length on the petite size was OK for sneakers or low heels. I would size down one size — the xs petite fit perfectly (and I usually have to size up for petites). I’m baffled by the reviews on the fabric. It’s…amazing. Not too thick, but certainly thick (and supportive) enough to hide lumps & bumps.

sneakers: Everlane Tread Sneakers – SUSTAINABLE – I’m wildly and totally obsessed with these sneakers. Comfy, supportive, seriously cool…they’re basically perfect.

sunglasses: Tory Burch sunnies (same shape, slightly different colorway)

suitcase: Geniuspack – I love the internal organization and the fact that it’s insanely light. I’ve had this carry-on for almost three years now, and it’s still going strong.

Cropped Sweater Pants, 2 Outfit Ideas

This is the same pair I was drooling over last Thanksgiving. Part of my hesitation then stemmed from a concern that perhaps cropped pants wouldn’t be warm enough…OR that cropped sweater pants wouldn’t look cute with sneakers. Dressing room pressure, man. I couldn’t deal.

Anyway, without the in-store pressure, I was able to put both concerns to bed.

sweater: Everlane Square Turtleneck Cashmere Sweater (size xs) – Thanks to the large band at the bottom, I find this sweater a little tricky to half-tuck…however, it worked with these pants.

pants: Anthro Linette Cropped Sweater Pants (xxs petite) – these pants do run big. But they’re so insanely comfy. They also come in black (back-ordered until early Dec, FYI) or a burnt orange.

sneakers: *SUSTAINABLE* Adidas — my usual. Find it on Nordstrom | Amazon.

bag: Everlane backpack – *SUSTAINABLE* I’m obsessed with light bags right now.

suitcase: Geniuspack – I love the internal organization and the fact that it’s insanely light. I’ve had this carry-on for almost three years now, and it’s still going strong.

B. Cropped Sweater Pants: Thanksgiving Dinner Outfit

Good grief these pants are comfortable. And if I needed to warm these pants up further, I’d simply wear a bootie with a higher shaft AND thick socks.

sweater: old Vince…but the closest I’ve found is either this ribbed gorgeousness from Nadaam…or this cashmere-silk blend.

barrette: pearl clip set from Amazon (suuuuuper cheap, but works good enough)

  1. So, when I saw your Instagram post with these pants, it was like a light bulb went off in my head. “Yes. That is what is missing from my life. Sweater pants is what I need.” So I ordered the Anthro ones, which are a bit long, but I do love them. And, in the mysterious way that the internet knows what you need and sends it to you, I saw a pair from H&M that looked great and ordered them, as well. And I love those, too, especially because they were only $30, but…THEY GROW. Like, a lot. Any suggestions on dealing with that? Can I throw them in the dryer? Will I ruin them? They were kind of crazy long by the time I got to bed tonight. But I can’t give up on them. They’re sooo comfortable! Any ideas about dealing with the growing pants is welcome! Thanks for the fabulous suggestion! Also, your hair…and lets be honest, your butt…look amazing here!

  2. Will you post pictures of yourself in the bobeau pants? What kind of shoes or boots do you wear them with? That’s what gives me pause, that they are crop but they are for winter, so I am confused about how to wear them in the midwest polar vortex without freezing my ankles.

  3. Thank you for the not-cropped version! Cropped is cute but honestly once the temp goes below about 55 (and it goes far, far below that where I live) I have no interest in cuteness over warmth. I. am. cold. I’d love more suggestions for not-cropped pants of all kinds.

  4. I bought the cropped Anthropologie pants in forest green last year and wore them to Christmas dinner–so comfy, so chic. I find all family gatherings end up getting hot (ovens on, lots of bodies) so I actually ended up barefoot, but when I’ve worn them outside in frigid temperatures, I go with a higher-shaft bootie and socks that match the boots, and I’ve found that is a successful way to keep covered but not ruin the lines of the outfit.

  5. I bought the Chiara sweater pants from your Instagram rec and sadly had to return them. The fabric is substantial, especially the waistband, BUT the waistband is a lot more structured than the rest of the pant, and it’s high-waisted. On my rectangle/apple body type, this meant that it created a waist (good) but then really emphasized my belly underneath the defined waist (bad). I joked to my partner that I looked like I was pregnant, and he didn’t disagree with me.

  6. Are they static-y? I don’t know… I’m just picturing them awkwardly clinging to my legs, and collecting lint once the temperature and humidity drops. I’m intrigued though!
