This time of year is notoriously hard to dress for. Summer is long gone and Fall has just begun but one day it’s cool and crisp outside and the next day it’s a scorching 90 degrees. One of my favorite ways to dress during this confusing in-between time is dresses over jeans.
Yup, you read right, the dress over jeans trend is back and for most of us, this isn’t our first time around the block with the trend. But forget everything you knew about the bulky and kiddish ’90s version. The 2017 version is sleek and sophisticated and 100 times more flattering than previous years. Plus, it’s a great way to incorporate your favorite summer dresses into your Fall wardrobe. Having trouble picturing it? Here’s how i wear it:
Outfit #1: Floral Slip Dress and Destroyed Skinnies

Wearing:
Floral Slip Dress – Most similar are Bardot Hibiscus Print Midi Slip dress from Revolve, Honey Punch Midi Slip Dress from ASOS. I love mixing different silhouettes and textures. A feminine floral slip pairs well with an edgy moto jacket and boho destroyed jeans.
Jeans – BLANKNYC Good Vibes Distressed Skinny Jeans, $88.00 at Shopbop. Usually I like to pair dresses with skinny jeans because I feel bulky when wearing any other type of jeans with them.
Outfit #2: Slinky Black Midi Slip and High Waisted Skinnies

Wearing:
Slip Dress – h:ours X Revolve Carson Slip Dress, $168.00 at Revolve. Right now Revolve has the best selection of slip dresses of anywhere I’ve looked online. This is one of my favorites. I love the side slits. It creates a flowy silhouette and makes it easier to move around.
Jeans – Citizens of Humanity Rocket High Waist Skinny Jeans, $238.00 at Nordstrom. My ‘Make Me Feel Like A Million Bucks’ jeans are great under slip dresses because the jeans fabric is stretchy and not bulky so you don’t see any lumps or bumps through the slip dress.
Sandals – Hartley Quarter Strap Sandals Mossimo Supply Co, $22.99 at Target. These are some of the most comfortable Target sandals I’ve ever owned and I’ve been through a lot of them through the years.
1. Pair with some black crop skinny jeans (lhttp://rstyle.me/n/ctfdmdb5akf) and some on-trend white block heeled booties (http://rstyle.me/n/ctfdmdb5akf)
2. If it’s still warm enough where you live, skip the jeans altogether and pair your black turtleneck and slip dress with some above-the-ankle black sock boots (http://rstyle.me/n/ctfdmdb5akf)
I wore a dress over cropped skinny jeans this past weekend hosting (Canadian) Thanksgiving. The dress was sort of a navy sack type with pockets, round neck and short sleeves. I was going to just wear a T-shirt and jeans but switched to the dress instead. It felt as casual as a T-shirt but way more pulled together.
I never really caught onto this trend the first time around, but did this today and will be trying it again tomorrow, but switching the colorway. Today I wore it with a chambray button down slip dress and black skinnies. Tomorrow I’m going to try it with a black silk slip dress and blue skinnies. I’ll let you know which one I like better. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hope! Yay! I’m so glad you were inspired to try it! I’d love to see what you came up with if you’re feeling brave and wanna send pics! I know what you mean about feeling exposed in some of those slinky slips- Usually, I have a moto jacket on or a tee underneath but it was SO HOT that day that I had to risk it! lol
I have a *denim* maxi slip dress from the Gap … thoughts on styling it for fall with a black turtleneck??
Hey Tara! Is this the one you have? http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pcid=13658&vid=1&pid=789583012 I hope so, bc I’ve got a few ideas for you! Here’s what I came up with:
I hope this helped some! xox,
Jess
How did I miss this amazing advice until now?? Thank you so much!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! How cute (and comfy). Sometimes a t-shirt just won’t cut it, and a dress is the perfect option.
Love how you wear it! I have not been aware of the trend, I think I’m in love with it.

I felt like I was going to be exposed any second in my slinky black slip dress! How do you manage?
