The absolute easiest shortcut in Linzi Life for “Lazy Fall Fashion” is a really good top layer. A piece that has something interesting to it…an interesting color, an interesting cut, an interesting pattern…that can be thrown on with the most basics in my closet. A piece that’ll freshen up older clothes, so I don’t feel pressure to buy EVERYTHING new each season. Of course, you can also style these top layers with more exciting pieces for more interesting looks, but what I’m usually looking for at the beginning of fall is the piece that looks good over my favorite jeans and tee, all black, or my work-out clothes. I’ve yet to find the perfect piece that works for all three “basic outfits”, but I definitely came close.
You know I love to start with disclaimers:
1. I need to hem my jeans that I’m wearing in the photos…it’s on The To-Do List.
2. Black sock booties, bare skin, and pencil skirts aren’t the most flattering look on me (possibly a post coming about “Do I actually NEED to wear things that are flattering? Because it’s super-annoying!”) I would probably wear this with patterned black tights. It was just too hot on “selfie day” to mess with it, and I AM kind of over the flattering requirement thing.
3. This is another MONSTER Linzi post. I have a difficult time making these posts concise. My mother and I both tend to “goop” things up, which for this TME adventure means trying ALL the things. Thanks for sticking with me.
For reference: I’m 5’2, size 27 jeans, 135 lbs. I always start my search for jackets and sweaters at Anthro –they tend to match my personal style best. A Free People hoodie was thrown into the mix, though, for an even 10. And now on to the search….
10 Top Layers for Lazy Fall Fashion
I loved this piece as soon as I took it out of the box. I love the cool color combo, I love that it has a hood, I love that it covers my butt if I’m wearing leggings, and I love the weight for fall. It’s also not just a “look cute” sweater. It’s heavy enough that I’ll be able to wear it on somewhat colder days, and it will actually keep me warm, but not so heavy that it’s uncomfortable. I also LOVE how it’s styled by the model here–so fun! It’s my goal to wear it at least once like her this fall. This is a keeper! Wearing XS petite.
2. Gold Sweater
This was the piece I was MOST excited about trying in person. The color is absolutely gorgeous! It’s much more golden than the pic on the model, and I love it! This color adds just the right amount of pop and interest to so many different looks. A big, BIG “unfortunately”, though, is it’s not super-easy to wear. It falls off my shoulders, and is going to be difficult to wear while schlepping kid stuff. It’s still a definite maybe, though…which is saying a lot since I’m saying this despite the wearing challenges. It really shines worn over patterned tops and dresses, but holds its own over solids too.
This was the surprise LOVE of the try-on sesh. THIS is the year-round layer I’ve been searching for! It’s going to be perfect over spring dresses, but also works really well right now, too. Structured, but soft, perfect cropped length, looks cute buttoned and open, and the boxy french girl cut (you can see it better on the model here) adds just enough interest. These photos in no way do this jacket justice–sorry! It should have been steamed after coming out of its tightly folded package. It IS expensive for a simple cotton jacket, but the cut is perfection, and I think it’s going to be one of my most worn items. My only regret is I wish I would have tried the size up before ripping off the tags(wearing XS). Might be nice to have more room to wear over sweaters.
4. Leopard Wrap
I wasn’t absolutely wowed by this wrap, but I have found myself REALLY wanting to get it out of the stack of “to be returned” and wear it, so that’s always an interesting sign that something may be better than I thought. It has a nice swingy shape and although it’s fine over these basics, I especially liked it over stripes and other patterns as well. It’s also REALLY soft and cozy. I think the black and white version is a little more “me”, so I’m considering trying that one.
This isn’t really my style, but I wanted to branch out and try it anyway — I thought it looked so cool. It IS really cool. It’s soft and is the perfect weight (warm, but not too heavy or uncomfortable). I’m not keeping it because buttoned up, the drape would annoy me. You have to kind of mess with the collar to get the look you want from the drape, and I can’t really be bothered with that. If you have more patience than me, though, this might be the right jacket for you. I loved everything else AND it comes in two other great colors! Wearing XS petite.
I thought I was going to REALLY love this one, but it was just meh. I love the color combo, I love the pattern, I love the ultra softness, but it just wasn’t quite right on me. I wanted it to close with a cool button or hang differently or do something more for plain outfits…it just didn’t grab me. The colors ARE really pretty in person and it’s so super-soft, so maybe if you’re taller? It’s only offered in one size.
Who knows how this ended up in my cart. I am NOT a blazer gal, but if I was, this would be in the running. It runs big, though–this is an XS. The coolest part of this blazer is the blue lining that pops out in a few places. The pocket has a blue liner, the inside of the jacket does as well, and if you roll the sleeves up (which I should have done)you can see the blue liner too. This one is selling out fast, but I also like the lines in the front of this one.

This was another surprise disappointment. I thought this would be the one I kept. Black and white stripes combined with fun colors is kind of my thing. But…it wasn’t my favorite. It didn’t feel “fall-ish” enough for what I want right now. The weight is actually pretty light, so it might be better for spring. I’m also curious how it looks once it hangs up for a bit and the “straight-out-of-the-box” look is gone.
This is on sale and is a great hoodie! It has some cool interesting details (contrasting green zipper pulls, tie in the back, and oversized cut) and is soft and comfy too. It IS just a hoodie, though….perfect for casual or over workout clothes. Love that it covers my butt with leggings, but has the interesting split hem with a tie. Wearing XS. I kind of want to try the size up just to see if more oversized looks even better, but I’m happy with the XS.
If you want a nice fuzzy expensive robe, this might be for you. Actually–I wouldn’t even want this for a robe. This was a disappointment. I wasn’t surprised, though…it’s only offered in one size, so I knew my 5’2 self would swim in it. I like the pattern and it’s incredibly soft and fuzzy, but even if it did fit, I desperately wanted to put my hands in pockets while I had it on and there aren’t any…boo! Maybe if you’re super, super-tall? I’m interested in this one that is similar, but comes in sizes.
