Shopstyle and American Eagle reached out recently, asking if we’d like to work together. They wanted a twist on the traditional ‘Mommy and Me’ shoot. They had recently extended their line of men’s denim to include smaller sizes, and wanted to know if our TME tween might like to try American Eagle’s denim line.

Gang, I gotta be honest: it took a sec for that penny to drop.

I mentally went through all of our contributors — literally the entire team loves AE —  trying to figure out who this tween might be.

Raines. Guys, it’s Raines. And while he’s only eleven, (at least for a few more — aren’t tweens technically 12??), I’ll admit AE’s smallest size, 26 X 28 is, in fact, his size.

My baby boy wearing man jeans? No. No no no no no.

But then he leaned over my shoulder while I, in shock, browsed through American Eagles’ latest denim offerings, all modeled by MEN WHO SHAVE and casually remarked, “Oh hey Mom, those jeans are cool.”

Remember when he refused to wear jeans? I’d have to hunt down that knit denim because he’d only wear soft pants? And suddenly we’re at the stage where “those jeans are cool” and “I think I want some cologne, Mom” and I just don’t even recognize my life anymore.

But he picked some jeans (and I did too #twistmyarm), and he picked a few man-shirts (size XS), which technically are too big on him, but he was all “finally these fit like I like them to, Mom. You always buy things that don’t fit right” — which means, ps, that they fit properly, and then I end up, a week or so later, staring at THIS:

WHAT. Is even HAPPENING.

Outfit 2: Rock Tees & Ripped Jeans

A classic combination, always. I’m actually reallllly freaking impressed with AE’s selection of graphic tees — they’re SO good.  And while we already know that the AE Tomgirl jeans and skinny jeans are team favs, I wanted to try AE’s 90’s boyfriend jean.

ps. The distressed pair R is wearing below is his favorite of the bunch, too.

Our Favorite Graphic Tees From AE

Like I mentioned before, I’m really impressed with AE’s line of graphic tees. Here are our favs….

Our Favorite Sweatshirts From AE

Raines’ hoodie is so cute that I went back and took a closer look. Whoa — the sweatshirts are GREAT.

Our Favorite Jeans From AE

I love the dark wash denim trousers…but the wash is not nearly as soft as my other AE denim. But this style is also available in a light wash. Raines’ jeans, however, were both really soft. AE is offering 25% off Jeans + Joggers now through 9/12. (So this one’s a no-brainer, you guys).

A huge thank you to American Eagle and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post!! We’re huge fans around here, and are thrilled to partner with a retailer who makes inclusive sizes such a big part of their brand. Bravo. As always, all thoughts, opinions and product choices are my own (or Raines’ own, in this case). And readers, thank you for your continued support. It doesn’t go unnoticed and is so very much appreciated.

  1. OMG SO FUN!!! I love this post so much, thank you for sharing! The Clash tee is something I want/need now and I love the rock look the best 🙂 xx

  2. This one really hit me in the feels. I LOVE your writing and, in particular, the way you’re so transparent and truthful about your boys and this growing-up gig. Such a beautiful, bittersweet thing.

And then all the photos — my goodness, your massive love for each other leaps right off the screen. It’s incredibly affirming and lovely. Thank you, Shana — and Raines!

  3. This post is the best 🙂 I also have an 11-year-old (girl), AND I love AE jeans (honestly, I have tried the pricey denim and come back to AE b/c they fit great at an excellent price point!).

  4. I was super excited when I saw AE is now making smaller sizes. I have a newly turned 12 year old who is already 6’1, super skinny, and wears a 26×34 in the jeans/pants department. Exactly nobody in the universe make that size. Add to it that his school has a tuck in your shirt rule- the poor guy just can’t win. Maybe AE could find it in their heart to make just a few jeans in my tall tween’s size!!

  5. I have two boys also, the oldest is 10. And i feel alllll the feels when you write about your boys. These pics just squeezed my heart – I love this stage where they are starting to be much more mature, clever, fun to hang out with and showing bits of ‘tween’ while still able to hug and hold hands with their mama. Mine still won’t wear jeans though – soft pants all the way for now!

  6. My really skinny 6 ft. teen loves the AE flex slim fit. You can order his size 28×34 online (but not available in stores). He recently stopped wearing super skinny jeans and wears the slim fit which is just one order less skinny; still a really slim leg, just not so tight at the calf/ankle and easier to get on and off. We appreciate that they have a lot of washes, as he doesn’t like distressing. Love their frequent sales.

  7. My 18 year old daughter is into consignment stores and dressing up her style. Lately, she’s loving blouses (yes, blouses) from AE. Button down, v neck, tied at the waist or lightly cropped, they are dressed up yet still casual. She’s been able to find a few, which brought us into the actual AE store for more. We knew about Aerie, but had always bypassed AE, I think I thought it was too country-ish or something. I’m not a fan of faux concert tees, but AE is now a required stop when we hit the mall.

  8. American Eagle and Aerie are just about the only fashion things my 15-year-old girl and I agree on. She signed up for the app and now I can always count on her to let me know when they’re having a sale!

  9. Ahh. These pictures are so sweet. These boys, man. I love them so much. Like the other moms here, I, too, love American Eagle. Their sizes are great and their selection is perfect for making everyone happy. With twin girls who turn 13 next week, and 14, 15 and 19 year old boys, finding a place that works for everyone, including mama who wants the boys to look nice and the girls to look cute/cool/age appropriate, is really tough. AE manages to hit all the necessary points to please everyone! Love this post!

  10. My boys are 14 and 11, but they are small. So I just started to go back to AE which I used to go to quite a bit when our oldest who is 29 was a teenager. Loved your pics! My boys would not be caught dead hugging with me like that. The little one still could do it at home, but not in public. So sad!

  11. I have an 11 year old 6th grade boy too, and his preferences are so similar to Raines’. ALL THE FEELS at how old and grown up my boy is!

How tall is Raines? My son is short, and I have not measured his inseam…
