Although Pat McGrath Lip Kits have long been sold out, the glitter lip is a trend that’s not going anywhere. The good news is you don’t have to have one of her lip kits in order to achieve those sparkly lips. Here are some ideas for lips in oxblood, red, or something a little lighter:
Oxblood
1. Start with an oxblood lip.

2. Add Glitter

You can add a little or a lot of the glitter depending on what you like. I used Make up For Ever’s Glitter in Red, which was perfect. I added the glitter more towards the center of my lips and it created the most amazing ombre effect. The pictures don’t do this look justice . . . it is seriously my favorite lip look ever. The glitter catches the light at different angles for the prettiest effect. It doesn’t feel awful and chunky on your lips either because the glitter is so fine (something I was skeptical about).
3. Add Gloss

You can wear gloss over the lipstick alone or over the lipstick and glitter (which I did in the photo above). The gloss is super shiny and actually tones down the glitter a bit. You can still get a hint of sparkle without being too over the top.
Red
1. Start with a red lip.

You can do the same thing with different color lipsticks to get different results.
2. Add Glitter

This is the same color glitter that I used with the oxblood.
3. Add Gloss

I added a little gold shadow on my lids but kept the focus on the lips.
This is my hands-down favorite new lip look (of all time, maybe) and will be perfect for Holiday 2016.
How-To:
Shimmery Lips
If you want to dip your toe into the glitter trend but aren’t sure about full-on glitter, try a shimmery lipstick like Buxom Shimmer Shock Lip Stick in Thunderbolt. It’s still a fun and festive look for the holidays.

I splurged on a Dior lipstick in ‘daisy plum’ which is a shimmer/glitter berry color and I LOVE it. My go-to for holiday parties this year.
Scotti! Thank you for this!! I have also been trying to wear Dorothy’s heels on my lips. I’ve been pairing a velvet red lip stick and then adding gold glitter, but now I know what’s been wrong! I need a red glitter instead. I’ll be downtown today, and you know what I’ll be picking up! Also, I have to tell you about a product that I am IN LOVE WITH! Well, I should say products. You’ve probably had this for ages, but in our Hong Kong flagship store for HM, they now have makeup and all sorts of beauty product. Oh. My. GOD! It’s insane! I can’t help but by a little something for myself every time I enter. So far my faves have been their colorful eyeliners (I’m wearing cobalt today!), their metallic lippies (kind of good at creating the looks up above, but not all the way), and finally their revitalizing body oil–it smells like I’m wearing the best holiday calendar ever! (One of Santa’s elves might have gotten me the roller ball perfume and the perfume balm. It will be perfect for my upcoming holiday travels through India.)
So, Scotti! Thank you for this post. In fact I just wrote a makeup artist friend on IG for her help, but now my problem is solved thanks to you!
Mwuah! Merry Christmas!!
