We get asked quite often around here for more tween and teen coverage. I cannot pretend to know what teens would actually like to wear for back-to-school these days, but my fab intern Nova does!
Nova put together some rad outfits that we then pulled into a bit of a capsule wardrobe for teens who gravitate towards mostly black closet pieces. I love how she finished each look off though with some pops of color in one or two of the items.
A Back-To-School Capsule Wardrobe For Teens: Black & White + Pops Of Color
I’m loving this whole mix of cute pieces, edgy pieces and sporty ones, too. All of these would work so well together, and we’ve got a couple of options for backpacks, with the classic JanSport vs. sportier Adidas pack…and for black boots, classic Doc Martens, chelsea boots or Steve Maddens that have a cool chunky heel. All great options to create a really fab closet for the ’21/’22 school year. She also chose a good array of classic investment pieces paired with a few trendier items. Love.
Instead of this Gen X’er rambling on about how I’d wear all of this back in the ’90s though, let’s just get into the looks, shall we? (Thank goodness…Nova (17) saved me with a few descriptions for us on what she loves about each piece with the outfit ideas, too.)

1. Pleated Skirt, Cute Tights & Docs
Nova says: This skirt screams fall to me, the color, the fabric…and I am a sucker for a pleated skirt. I thought the tights would dress it up while the sweatshirt dresses it down, and Docs are always a yes for me.
2. Cropped Tee & Paper Bag Waist Skirt
Nova says: This outfit is a perfect transition outfit from summer to fall. The skirt allows you to stay cool and look cute at the same time. If you get cold you can throw a jacket over top, maybe something dark green, orange or black. (Laura’s note: this would be cute.)
3. A Black Puffer Coat, But Keep It On-Trend
Nova says: All these individual pieces are staples for sure. It’s always good to have a good pair of black jeans, and I feel like the white stitching just elevates them. I also love The North Face jackets so much… I think they are such good investments and they last for a good amount of time as well.
4. Butterflies Are Having A Moment
From Nova: I love this outfit so much, the butterfly sweater is the winner for me though. Just like the first outfit, every single one of these pieces can be worn with pretty much anything else. I have the Converse, and I wear them with literally everything!
Thanks, Nova for picking up where I almost always leave off…coverage of teen clothing. You’re a godsend!
And what did I wear on my first day of high school in 1993? I know you didn’t ask but Imma tell you anyway…it was an a-line denim shirt dress with a plaid flannel tied at the waist and…Timberland boots. Yep. This kind.
