Weekend 11.26

Happy Thanksgiving, Gang!! We’re up in Vermont at the moment, doing a little skiing and pretty giddy about the fact that we’re able to ski this early in the season. It’s a big treat for us East Coasters. We managed to pack in some ice skating, too (on Thanksgiving no less), and hope to head downtown Stowe for one of my favorite holiday traditions: walking around with coffee/hot chocolate and hitting up a bookstore. Obviously, I’ll be swinging by Archery Close, too, to see what Taice has come up with this holiday season.

We had friends up for Thanksgiving this year, and it’s been a blast. Pax and his partner-in-crime (also a younger sibling) beat their older brothers in pool and we have NOT heard the end of it since. As a result, Pax has been set to his “max squeeker” setting for two straight days now – one of which was spent entirely indoors because of rain – so the kid now needs to be run like a dog.

What’s the 12-year-old boy equivalent to ‘fetch’?

We might just drop him off at the hill with his snowboard for a few hours, rain or no rain. All part of that East Coast skiing experience.

Speaking of that East Coast skiing experience…Ski The East, Jerry of the Day, and OverEasy faux-fur balaclavas (that fit over a helmet) – all have sales this weekend.

New ski gear, coming in hot. I just put in a giant order at Halfdays – $50 off orders of $200 this weekend. This small, women-owned business (growing rapidly – yay!!) has never done a sale before, and I’ve been waiting to see their new colors in person. New for this year? Their bibs now come in two lengths, they’re re-worked the fit of their plus sizes, and upgraded their waterproof coating, too. I’ll do a full review once I’ve tested them out.

Baselayers! Under Armour is 30% off EVERYTHING, so I just put in a huge order for my kid’s baselayers. Nobody does warm, wicking, long-lasting baselayers better than UA. Ours get worn & washed multiple times per week, and I’m still able to pass some down to Pax. I always make sure each kid has one pair of 4.0 baselayers (top, bottom) which are the absolute WARMEST for skiing in sub-zero temps, and then make sure they have 1-2 sets of UA’s 2.0 baselayers (top, bottom). Note that these baselayers run small, so size up a full size. Raines actually needed a men’s size medium, for example.

Win some, lose some. I popped over to Anthro’s 30% off sale to snag this cool pair of Mother Ditchers (my new favs, see a different wash on me, here), but they were sold out. Instead, I came away with this ‘shut up and dance’ tee. I’m thrilled. (And I did find those exact jeans in stock, not on sale but gift card eligible.)

Five best jeans on sale, says me. Granted, I’m going with the denim that is currently still in stock, but if you are in the market, I highly recommend: oneGAP’s high-rise barrel jeans (now 50% off, suuuuuper soft and available in petite, reg, and tall sizes), twoAG Alexxis straight-leg jeans (super classic, French-girl straight-legs but soft rather than rigid), threerag&bone Nina cigarette jeans (high-rise boyfriend jeans, but sexy), fourJoe’s Jeans Mia flares (all of my tall friends are wearing these right now – they’re ahhhmazing and come in a coated style, too), and fiveGAP’s cheeky straight jeans (a perfect wash to play around with winter whites, and available in reg, tall, and petite lengths).

Gifting littles. If you haven’t yet seen our Etsy Cyber Monday Gift Guide, it’s freaking GOOD. I just bought these genius slingshots for everyone’s stockings, bath bombs, and smiley faced mittens…and then this amazingness for Scotti’s youngest. She’s going to kill me, but it’s soooo fun.

Yay!!! I’m so thrilled for Kristel, the founder of Suprise Powerz dolls. Her dolls are seriously cute and fun, they promote STEM, use authentic, actual kid voices (often from under-represented populations). We’ve been a big fan since learning about these dolls a couple of years ago, and were thrilled to find that they’re now being carried at Nordstrom (on sale!) and Target.

PSA: Biossance and Colleen Rothschild are both a whopping 30% off all weekend, so don’t forget to stock up. You guys know my favs by now, but if you’re looking for gift ideas, this full-size body care set (with a dry brush) looks like a perfect freaking gift, although Colleen’s Radiance Cleansing Balm is pretty enough to gift as-is. (It’s one of my go-to gifting moves.)

Pretty, sexy tops. I’m all set for holiday festivities after snapping up this sexy sweater and this jaw-droppingly gorgeous silk cami, both on sale.

Creature of habit. While I certainly look at lots of new handbags, I rarely buy new handbags. I like what I like, I suppose. But I did need something lighter, so I picked up this See by Chloe on sale (in ‘cement’). It’s perfect. But then Clare V. did a surprise 20% off and I lost my damn mind. There’s no way I can keep all of these bags, but if interested (and, yes, go ahead and ridicule me), I bought: this Midi Sac (in black quilted napa), the checkered fanny pack AND the checkered poche (I think I was trying to figure out which shape I liked better), the petit henry (for “research” obvi), as well as the Sandy in natural. I also ordered fun straps. Again, for research.

Worth a watch. Have you seen the new Will Farrell/Ryan Reynolds movie, Spirited? We watched it last night, and this twist on Dicken’s Christmas Carol is a TON of fun. I can’t stop humming the soundtrack (yeah, it’s a musical with tap dancing and everything). We’ll probably make this one a yearly tradition.

What I’m cooking this week. We’ve been eating so many Thanksgiving leftovers I never want to see gravy, stuffing, or mashed potatoes ever again. Instead, I’m turning to my favorite vegan detox recipes: Crowded Kitchen’s Super Green Soup, Love & Lemons Mezze Platter and/or her Black Bean Soup, and Kitchen Treaty’s Pumpkin, Chickpea, and Red Lentil Curry.

Enjoy the long weekend!

  1. Ah, your Weekend posts are always my favorite (though the weekly sales report also has a special place in my heart); your thoughtful, witty and ace writing, Shana, is such a joy to read. This week, BIG ups for the baselayers recommendation—my 13-year-old son and I had just been trying to figure out where to buy baselayers for him (for outdoor sports as well as normal ol’ frigid days here in Chicago). Boom! Shana and fam with the rock-solid recommendation FTW! Many, many thanks!
