I am SO happy that Nordstrom gave us this preview ahead of the Anniversary Sale! I am such a visual person–I need to see what everything looks like together or I just get totally overwhelmed. I started noticing this when I would buy clothes for the kids. If I just bought individual pieces I liked, I found that they ended up with way too many clothes and actually putting outfits together was more difficult than it needed to be. Which is why I started doing capsule wardrobes in the first place.
It made so much more sense that I started doing them for myself–making sure everything can easily be mixed and matched, so when I go to get dressed I don’t just sit and stare at my closet. So…capsule wardrobe? Yes, please. Especially when it comes to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which can easily get overwhelming with so many styling options.
Scotti’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview: A Capsule Wardrobe Worth Investing In
So, where to start? Denim. The denim selection in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is insane. My plan is to order a bunch of jeans to try on, and see which ones fit/look/feel the best and go from there. Actually trying them on is the easiest way to narrow it down. The two pairs below can easily be swapped out if they don’t fit, but it’s the pretty camel and tan colors that I’m especially loving in the sale. (I’m obsessed with that faux leather moto jacket, but I can’t decide between that one or this real leather jacket in that gorgeous tan color.)
Also, in a concerted effort to avoid accumulating too much stuff, I’m going to focus on quality over quantity–a concept that has always been kind of difficult for me. More than a few times I’ve bought something I kinda liked just because it was on sale and proceeded to wear it exactly zero times. So this year I want to find high-quality, well-made pieces that will last for years (well past this pandemic) instead of trendier, less expensive items that I’ll wear once or twice. I’m also trying to keep it as COMFY as possible by focusing on pieces that can be dressed up for going out but are comfortable enough to wear at home all day long (cause we’re spending a lot of time at home these days).
And on that note, I actually have a second wish list/capsule wardrobe coming out soon…one that coordinates perfectly with this one, but is even more focused on comfy at-home options, so stay tuned for that! Also, if you like this wardrobe, bookmark this post for when the sale goes live! Using our links to shop the sale is a way you can directly support us–and it is SO very much appreciated!
I love moto jackets, I love faux fur…so I’ve got really high hopes for this one! Love the color and cut, and I could wear it with jeans, dresses…sweatpants (ha!).
I’m hoping this won’t overwhelm my height…because the color and fabric on this coat is amazing. (Most) Reviewers love it and say it’ll last years. I’ll have to see about the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a closure, but it seems to be a crazy versatile (dress up, dress down, etc.) coat.
A beautiful everyday necklace that pretty much goes with everything.
I love my hoops–in gold or silver, and the perfect “big-but-not-too-big” size.
This COLOR . . . and the price is crazy! Love love love.
This gorg Free People sweater runs BIG, but I’m all about that right now. Throw it on over leggings and lounge, or wear with jeans and statement earrings…or even layer over an LBD. I’ve been searching for slouchy off-the-shoulder sweaters to wear instead of sweatshirts…and I wear them over bralettes when a strapless isn’t appealing.
The perfect layering piece. Every closet needs one of these thin Nordstrom Signature turtlenecks!
I have this Halogen goodness from years’ prior, and it’s great–super-soft cashmere, but my favorite thing about it is the small v on the hemline. It helps it to hang straight and not pull across your middle. (And I think I’ll be getting this rust color and the ivory–super pretty for fall!)
This is like the perfect cross between my beloved Julian and Tumi backpacks. It’s smaller than the Tumi I currently have and bigger than the Julian–with a padded laptop compartment. Best of both worlds–and how gorgeous is this color??
10. AG Jeans
There are a TON of jeans in this sale, and I plan on ordering a lot to try on…BUT, I know that AG jeans are traditionally my favorite, best-fitting brand. These won’t be nearly as cropped on me as on the model, but will still be a nice length (I hope) and really soft denim.
I love these Vince Camuto boots. The color, the slight slouch…I think they’ll look good with wide-leg crops, midi dresses (and skirts), and, of course, skinny jeans.
The color, low heel and shape of the toe sold me on these. (I’d wear them with black, just FYI!)
THESE. The heel is under 3″ (high enough for flares and short enough for walkability) and they come in some great colors…but realistically, this color is the perfect one for my wardrobe.
I’m really intrigued by these jeans from JOE’s. Technically, they’re called bootcut but they look “flare-y” to me…and the curvy, of course, sold me. (And so did those reviews, tbh!)
You may or may not know this about me, but I have a slight obsession with little black dresses. I’m hoping this one won’t be too long on me, because I love the neckline and slit (which I know won’t be as high on my 5’4″ frame). Throw on some boots and an oversized sweater to warm it up for fall.
A Few Favorites From Last Year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (Re-Stocked For 2020)
There are a few items from last year’s sale that sold out pretty quickly that are BACK and fully restocked for this year’s sale! Here are my favorites:
1. My Favorite AG Boyfriend Jeans
These are awesome jeans–one of my favorites. Slightly slouchy (but not sloppy) with straight legs. LOVE.
2. These Fun Halogen Waist-Defining Pants
I LOVE the way these fit. They’re back this year and are fully stocked for the first time since last year…also in black or a cool teal green. I’m wearing a 4P here–sized down due to the higher waist per usual.
3. This Must-Have Tunic Sweater
I had no idea I’d be wearing this sweater as much as I would this year given quarantine…SO comfortable. I love the length and the side snaps, which work especially well for us pear-shaped ladies! (I might pick up the black before it sells out this year because this got a LOT of wear last year.)
4. Faux Fur Coat!!
This coat is awesome. Like wearing a big comfy stuffed animal…maybe not the best description, but that’s really what it feels like!
4. These Easy Ponte Pants
These are stretchy and comfy — a nice break from leggings when you don’t want to put on “real pants” but want to maybe look like it. (These will look so cute with all the tops in the capsule wardrobe — with that black turtleneck and moto jacket?? Yaaaasssss.)
5. The Softest Cardigan Ever
If you don’t yet have a Barefoot Dreams cardigan, do yourself a favor and get one. Your quarantine self will thank you. Super-comfortable, washes well, and is a much cuter option than a robe (although I do own an ugly robe, much to my husband’s chagrin).
Barefoot Dreams Cardigan (I’m wearing the medium for an oversized fit)
6. A Cowl Neck Tunic
I was bummed that my favorite sweater from last year’s sale wasn’t included this year (that Free People cowl neck tunic), but this one is really similar–and is actually softer and stretchier. It’s such a versatile sweater that’s easy to dress up or down and is a perfect option, especially for this year. (It can be worn multiple ways just like the Free People one.)
Cheers, everyone! Happy shopping!
