Reader Style: Amelia’s Perfect Airplane-With-Kids Outfit

It’s reader style time! We were thrilled to get the following note from Amelia:

I’m an Australian mum who has very recently moved with my family to Singapore.  I’ve been an avid reader of the Mom Edit since we were posted to Calgary a few years ago and I was pregnant with my little boy.  Your blog is very often the only non-business reading I get to do anymore, what with working full time and having two little people.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for such a great blog.  Over the last two years my style has evolved as a direct result of your ideas.  As you can see, I’m still a bit conservative (the pearls!), but those J Brand cargos as the absolute best weekend pants.  You’ve also converted me to Free People, thus the top.  And floating around that plane seat somewhere is a lovely tan Rebecca Minkoff backpack holding various kid stuff.  (By the end of the flight I was unfortunately adorned in vomit. But I still looked good, darnit!)

My work style has changed too.  Still conservative, but I’m pushing myself to try things outside of my comfort zone.  (The best description of my work style previously comes from a member of my team who told me I dressed like a Qantas flight attendant!)
Anyway, thanks for all of your great articles.

Collage Details:

Tops: Free People Mercury Tee (in ‘Leaf’ and ‘Ivory) – Similar to Amelia’s top and can be worn off-the-shoulder. These shirts are perfect to layer over something (like a cami) because they’re slightly cropped/come up if you raise your arms.

Cami: Yummie by Heather Thomson Nursing Tank

Pants: J Brand Houlihan Jeans

Earrings (Similar): J. Crew Pearl Stud Earrings

Booties: Free People Lost Valley Ankle Bootie (in ‘Berry’) – We’re sure Amelia was rocking some great travel shoes to complete her look (they’re just not pictured). If we were to continue styling her top and Houlihan’s these booties would be a serious contender. It doesn’t hurt that they come in plenty of colors, either.

Sneakers: Adidas ‘Stan Smith Sneaker (Women)  – You can’t go wrong with our beloved Stan Smiths. If you’ve got a big trip coming up (i.e. strollers, bags, more bags + kids) suit up with these for some stylish comfort.

Amelia, thank you for writing in (from across the WORLD nonetheless)! We love to hear from all of our readers but this was such a special reminder of just how far our little TME community can reach. Like you said, working yourself out of your comfort zone is what it’s all about but we got a kick out of that homage to your beloved pearls – keep ’em!! We totally support the stand for wearing what makes you, you. On behalf of the entire TME team, we hope you (and your family) are loving Singapore!

If you (or your friend) are LOVING a piece recommended by TME, send us an email! It’ll make our day AND you could end up in your very own post.

  1. I’m interested in the airline she took! Is that a bassinet right next to her seat? Please ask her what airline that is. I will be flying to KL later this year with my toddler.

  2. Nice article! I like to read this, especially about children! I write children’s stories and search for inspiration on sites like this. It’s cool to dress well and watch the fashion! look these up, I’ll be very glad. The main thing is to have your own style and not imitate someone 🙂

  3. Much obliged for sharing peruser input/style! What a charming mother and minimal one. I adore this sort of post! Extraordinary style, Amelia!
