The perfect day-to-night outfit puzzle solved. This silky midi skirt is the perfect animal print & just right for workwear & cocktails later. Styled, here.I’m admittedly a little late to jumping on the whole silky midi skirt trend, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere soon, so I’m gonna go with…better late than never? (The same goes for my obsession with Schitt’s Creek — we just started with Season One when we got back from Yosemite, and it’s had me snorting tea through my nose every night since. Somewhat related: I’m still letting my kiddo believe that I go to bed almost immediately upon leaving her room, save for “washing up dinner” or “folding laundry” or any other menial task that won’t lead her to believe that adults resume their independence once the clock strikes eight. On a level of one to Santa Claus, how rocked is she going to be when she learns the truth? Or can I just ride the wave until middle school when she starts outlasting me? Yeesh.)

Perfectly Casual + Chic = This Silky Midi Skirt

So this silky midi skirt. I was torn when styling this piece for this shoot because my most natural inclination would have been to pair it with a graphic T, a leather or jean jacket, and either my trusty Adidas or the midi boots you see here. I’ve actually worn it a couple of times in that exact iteration since then, and it’s glorious. Perfectly casual while still intentionally fashionable enough that I feel pretty good about myself rolling into school pickup. But since I work from home, I’m less often challenged to put together outfits that would pass for office-appropriate, so I decided to do a little office-to-happy-hour situation that the vast majority of my working mama friends would be able to appreciate, and here we are.

I can’t decide what I appreciate about this skirt more: 1) the print — I went with a skirt in an easy-going animal print (like Laura, I’m kinda persnickety about animal print patterns, and I really love the elegant size and movement of this one versus some of the more boldly graphic prints I usually gravitate toward); or 2) the elastic waist, which doesn’t necessarily look elastic (total peeve of mine, so major win!) but allows you to easily wear the skirt higher or lower on your waist/hips, depending on your look/height). Another win of the elastic waistband: it’s equally comfy while seated, so you’re not worried about a taut band of satin digging into your middle every time you sit down at your desk or climb in and out of the car. (Sadly, at the time of publishing, this exact skirt is sold out, but I’ve linked a few others that share similar features, below!)

For both looks, I paired the skirt with a stretchy mock turtleneck shell that walks the perfect line between a jersey and a knit. Then I just switched out the topper, shoes and accessories to take it from the office to the bar.

I’ve been reaching for this not-quite-blush oversized cardi every other day since the NSale, so I can most definitely endorse its wearability. (I’ve also machine washed it a few times so far without pilling, so for a relatively inexpensive piece, it’s holding up surprisingly well.) With my favorite black pumps, and a pop of color in the fun fan tassel earrings, this is would be such an easy, chic outfit to pull out for brunch or church, too. (I don’t personally attend church, which I’m sure surprises no one, but I always notice the chicly dressed families pouring out of service when we’re downtown Sunday morning.) Does it feel a little school fundrasier-y? Maybe, and maybe I wanna be that person every now and then.

Silky Midi Skirt (Similar) // The exact skirt I’m wearing sold out just as we shot these photos (go figure!) but this piece from GAP also features a high-end feeling graphic animal print that conveys movement and the all-important, pull-on waist at a similar price point.

Mock Neck Tank (Similar) // Girl cannot get a break. The exact tank I’m wearing just sold out, too, (gah!) but GAP comes to the rescue again with a classic piece in a very similar weight and texture.

Sweater // I picked this up during the NSale, but I’ve worn it so frequently, I’m considering getting it a second color. (This is the Oatmeal color, but it reads slightly blush — kinda feeling the Olive color they just added!) It’s crazy soft and slouchy, and I’m throwing it on over everything from dresses to T’s. Even at full price, I would consider it to be a good value. It’s held up well through multiple machine washings, too — just lay it flat to dry. TTS, though it’s intended to be pretty oversized.

Heels // Not the edgiest footwear I own, but these are timeless and comfortable — my go-to when a classic black pump is in order.

Earrings // Picked these up during J.Crew’s answer to Prime Day and people constantly ask me about them. They have such a cool, handmade feel and are super-lightweight. On sale, again, for almost 50% off!

Bag // I’ve had this Rebecca Minkoff M.A.B. for ages, and it’s held up really well. This exact style has since been retired, but I love the hardware and details on this similar bag from Dooney & Bourke (on sale during their Friends & Family event!), or you can find the same M.A.B. bag in different colors preowned here (oxblood NWT!!) and here (bone!).

Silky Midi Skirt for After Hours

OK, so shocker: this is more akin to how I would personally style this skirt on a daily basis. A little moodier, but equally easy with a high comfort level. Topped with a drapey moto jacket and my favorite new midi boots plus a statement necklace, it’s the only thing I want to wear while posing around an empty bar at 10 in the morning. (If you’re ever in Half Moon Bay, we actually shot these at one of my favorite eateries to bring the kiddo, San Benito House. The food, I would say, is…tourist town good? Yeah, gonna go with that (actually, the calamari + fried shrimp tacos are bordering on great), but there’s loads of outdoor seating, more often than not live music and a beautiful garden and grassy courtyard the kids can run around in while you taste your way through their margarita menu.)

Jacket // An older jacket of mine, but I’d also wear this with my fave Blank NYC vegan leather jacket, which has a similar drape.

Boots // I ordered these boots as a more affordable alternative to the Paige boots that S raves about. They’re admittedly a little different in style, but I wanted a slim, higher shaft bootie and a walkable, Western heel for under $100 and these more than delivered. The leather at the shaft is buttery soft and so flattering, and they required zero breaking in. In short, I’m positively giddy about this purchase. Only a few sizes are left here (oh wait, also a couple of sizes left here and here!).

Necklace // Several years old and purchased on a trip to Spain, but you could get the same vibe from any silver bib necklace. This one would have a similar effect at a great price.

Sunnies // Tiarra mentioned these $15 Amazon sunnies in a post months back, and I couldn’t stop thinking about them. They’re just the right proportion (big but not too big) and lightweight. So many colors, too!
