Splurge vs. Save: Dining Room Furniture

One of my duties as an interior decorator is to attain a certain look for my clients within a certain budget. Although it may not be in my best interest as a designer to avoid upselling to my clients, I am, by nature, a bargain hunter, and I want to do right by my customers and followers as well. I want to shop for them like I would shop for myself: Smartly.

The Splurge vs. Save comparison is something I’ve been doing on my social media and engaging with my followers over for quite some time now, and so I’ve decided to turn this into a regular post for TME! It’s hard for me because I am a firm believer in “you get what you pay for,” — but really only to a certain extent. I truly believe that if you shop smart (or hire someone to shop smart on your behalf) you CAN obtain beautiful things for a great deal! The key here is to always always read reviews and customer images when purchasing something over the internet, but as long as you are vigilant, you really can find some incredible deals on sites like Wayfair and Overstock!

To give you the best visual, I have compared two very similar furniture items side by side below, and presented you with their ticket prices below the image (note: current prices may fluctuate). Now I can tell you, that in posting these type of comparisons on my social media (I like to play these games on my Instagram story), I don’t post the actual prices, and the majority of my followers guess WRONG as to which is the save item and which is the splurge! I’m really looking forward to helping all of our TME readers source beautifully made furniture for the best deals through these splurge vs. save posts. This week’s post: Dining Room Buffets and Servers.

Enjoy!

Splurge vs. Save: Dining Room Furniture

1// The Darrius Wood Sideboard from Wayfair combines boho-chic style with glam accents. Founded atop a stainless steel base awash in an eye-catching gold hue, this piece features coordinating handle pulls and an oak top in a natural tone accented by light distressing. I’d say, this “save” is a total STEAL! Looks so much more expensive than it is!

2// The Glenmoor Sideboard from One King’s Lane is an absolutely stunning piece of furniture, enhanced with a natural whitewash finish, this mahogany sideboard shows off masterful craftsmanship with intricately carved molding, a finely cerused grain, and a sleek brass key lock; but at this price, I could probably re-furnish my entire dining room!

3// The Ashford Bar Cabinet from World Market stuns with A 3D textural facade crafted of acacia wood, tapered legs, and a walnut finish lend our exclusive bar cabinet style to spare. The perfect piece to house your glassware, bottles of wine or any other bar/entertainment accessories! And the price can’t be beat!

4// When I posted a “splurge vs. save comparison contest” on my Instagram this week and compared this Alessio Cabinet from One King’s Lane to The Ashford Bar Cabinet from World Market, 78% of my followers guessed that this was the cheaper of the two. Little did they know, not only was it the more expensive, but it was 9x the price!

5// The Poston Sideboard from Wayfair is a beautiful Louis XIV style furniture, crafted from mirrored exteriors with the frame crafted from a combination of pine and manufactured woods. Featuring a champagne finish and carved feet, this sideboard is sure to add a pop of glam gravitas to any formal dining, and has a much more expensive look than what it’s price tag reveals!

6// The Robertson Mirrored Sideboard from One King’s Lane is so similar to The Poston Sideboard, and although a beautiful piece of furniture, at almost triple the price, I don’t think its a justified purchase over its more affordable counterpart!

7// The Eau Claire 6 Door Accent Table from Wayfair is crafted from solid wood and features a classic design in a worn finish, lending some rustic appeal to your space. Its three cabinets open to reveal adjustable shelves that can be seen through the glass panels, perfect for showcasing some fine china or decorative favorites. It is so beautiful and so affordably priced! If your style is a bit more rustic or modern farmhouse, this piece is perfect for your kitchen or dining room!

8// The Buren Sideboard from One King’s Lane has a beautiful rustic, farmhouse feel and I love the oversized industrial handles. The price is ACTUALLY not that bad, although almost triple the price of its comparison. But I do think that if you have it in your budget to spend, this is a piece I would definitely splurge on.

1// You have probably noticed that 1 and 2 of this collage are identical sideboards, so you’re probably asking yourself, “Why is she comparing two of the same furniture item? Well, this is because sometimes, if you do your research, you can often find The SAME EXACT piece of furniture somewhere else for a better price. The Ramsgate Sideboard from Joss & Main is the perfect example. I found this after originally finding this same exact sideboard on Target’s website, but for $200 more. Do some digging ladies.. it pays off!

2// The more expensive counterpart is from Target and has a price tag of nearly $200 more. It is a beautiful piece of furniture, embellished with the casual appeal of three latticed doors, an attractive planked top with weathered oak finish and a lightly distressed white finish throughout, this vintage French Provincial look will serve up elegance for years to come, but sorry Target, I’m going with the Joss & Main version.

3// I LOVE this Senda Credenza from Joss & Main. It is the perfect balance of traditional with its classic shape, a little bit farmhouse rustic with its wood finish, and a little bit glam with the mirrored doors… AND this price! You seriously can not beat it!

4// Ok, so I really do love this Westport Sideboard from One King’s Lane. Honestly, it’s probably one of my favorite sideboards in this entire post, but again, for MORE THAN 4x the cost of its counterpart, I will always have such a hard time justifying this purchase for myself. Now for clients with a high budget and who are looking for the absolute best quality furnishings, this buffet is an absolute yes yes yes!

5// The Dawson Buffet from Pier 1 is the perfect blend of modern and traditional, thanks to a brushed finish and lasting construction. The buffet features three felt-lined drawers with hidden metal glides and two adjustable lower shelves. High style meets family-style, and it’s a great price for such a well built, beautiful piece of furniture!

6// The Linden Buffet from Pottery Barn is a very similar comparison to the Dawson Buffet, same traditional yet rustic look, but for more than double the price. Again, you know with Pottery Barn, you are getting extremely high-quality furniture, but The Dawson Buffet from Pier 1 has great reviews and I saw this in person, it truly is a stunning piece. I’d have to go with The Dawson here, even regardless of price; I like the look better!

1// Blue is my favorite color, so naturally, this navy blue Sunburst Sideboard from Pier 1 instantly caught my eye, and then the price tag KEPT my eye! This is a great piece for a dining room as a little bar, entryway table, or formal living room piece!

2// I love the wood finish on this Brown & Gold Sunburst Cabinet that I found on Houzz, and I do think it may LOOK a little more expensive than the blue, but I’m not sure if its enough to justify the difference in price. The main deciding factor for me here is if you just really are not a fan of the blue. That’s the only reason I see to justify the purchase of this one!

3// Another comparison here of the same exact buffet for a different price on two different retailers sites! I love the clean, retro modern look of the Jayden Brown Sideboard from Pier 1. Constructed of Acacia hardwood and rubberwood, the Jayden is built for deep-lasting sturdiness with an easy-to-clean surface and at this price, its a no brainer!

4// Target, I have a bone to pick with you. The Sierra Mid-Century Sideboard is literally identical to the Jayden Sideboard from Pier 1, except Target has it marked at over $300 more! Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE Target, but I have seen them do this now with several pieces of furniture that I have found on other sites as well.

5// Ok, Target has redeemed themselves by doing right by us with this piece. The Landon Buffet is beautiful, sleek and modern and under $600!

6// The Lenox Hill Sideboard from One King’s Lane is stunning and very high end looking… with a very high-end price tag. For $3,554,99 this guy is all yours!
