And sometimes…you get to eat ice cream on the job!
This hot hot day in Portland we decided to go to what would become my new favorite ice cream shop. At the suggestion of my friend and insanely talented photographer, Posy Quarterman, we headed over to Fifty Licks for a fun afternoon of delicious treats.
The Outfit Formula
Ok, so in the interest of fashion and not wanting to make you jealous by describing all of the ridiculously delicious ice cream flavors, on to talking about a new favorite outfit combo of mine: black & white and olive.
Black, white, and olive is such a classic combination, yet it feels a little unexpected and fresh. (I especially like these olive pants with a black-and-white patterned top….stripes look great, as would a windowpane print top or a top with a small pattern.)
Sienna in that dress + sneaks. I know I’m biased, but #cutenessoverload!! Also, these sandals are my new favorite wedges for spring & summer. You’ve seen them before on my favorites post, but they are insanely comfy! I could easily wear them all day. They give a little height and the light tan is a perfect compliment to the olive and black/white here. It’s also a great go-to color shoe for most outfits. Loving Sorel’s spring line.
Outfit Details
Top: Everlane V Neck Tee – Everlane makes some of my favorite tees…and they are fair trade to boot. Here I’m wearing a small, but if you want a drapey tee size up from your normal size on this fit. It’s not a tight fit, but it’s not an oversized fit either.
Pants: Banana Republic Sloan Fit Garment-Dyed Slim Ankle Pant – Love these pants. They are a nice heavy fabric and well-made. I went with a petite size in these since I wanted a true crop. I size up 1 size when I do petite and would recommend that for this particular pair. Love how they fit and the color makes for a perfect neutral. These are also garment dyed which makes for a cool look.
Sandals: Sorel Joanie Wedge – Seriously comfy and very cute. Getting so much wear out of them already. I love them with any ankle crop pants and my black overalls. They’d also be good with shorts and dresses as it warms up.
Earrings: Express Double Diamond Dangles – Super lightweight. A pair you’ll constantly be reaching for (at least I am).
On Sienna:
Dress: Already gone at H&M but this one is practically the same but with short sleeves. I adore the pockets on these!
Shoes: Dang. Also gone, but these are adorable and very close. Or, you could go with the actual Stan Smiths from Adidas. Omg.

Let me know if you try this outfit combo or if you’ve found some good pieces that would work in this mix. And thank you again to Posy for the incredible photos. Please check out her other work here. She’s traveling some this year and may be coming near you! Snag her for a family shoot…definitely if you’re in the PNW.
Until next time!

Super cute wedges! I love that color combo! They all are neutral colors and work well together!
Gah…. i ALMOST bought olive pants yesterday and i put them back b/c i wasn’t sure how to wear them without looking to “safari.” I should have checked here fist! #lessonlearned
I always, always love your posts, Laura. You always manage somehow to come up with outfit formulas (and I LOVE me a good formula!) that are simple and yet chic and interesting. So hard to balance simplicity with non-boringness if you know what I mean. Keep ‘me coming! You’ve already influenced many an outfit of mine!
Thank you so much, Michelle!! I’m glad it resonates with you. I’d say you should go for the regular fit instead of petite. I’m thinking I probably should’ve tried those, too, even though I don’t mind the petite. I think they might cuff ok.
Oh and one more question…do you recommend going for the short or regular length sizing in the olive BR pants? I’m 5’5″ and don’t mind rolling the cuff…thoughts?
