True to form, even though it had been 18 months since we’d seen each other, I made my momma do some werk while she was visiting us recently for my daughter’s birthday. Haha. (You can tell by the photos below we really hated every minute of it.)

Styling Athleta Joggers: Outfit Ideas From Mom & Me

We both ADORE Athleta joggers so I thought it’d be fun to show how we each style them up!

OH my gosh. I hope everyone has had the chance to see family or besties recently. It’s all-renewing, yeah? We were all beside ourselves over just how needed it was!

OK, on with the joggers outfit ideas before I start tearing up again…

My 60-something mom & I both ADORE Athleta joggers, so we're each styling 'em up -- dressy & casual, black & green. So FUN!

My favorite Athleta joggers are the Brooklyn Joggers in olive. I wore the heck out of these last year and also styled them up a bunch of ways. I’m wearing a 4 Petite. They fit true to size, albeit a tiny bit tighter than last summer. These are offered in a great range of sizes, from 0-26 in the regular lengths, and 0-16 in petite and tall lengths. The Brooklyn joggers have a slight texture to them, which makes them flattering and little more versatile, I think. I also adore the side stripe for that sporty vibe I love.

My mom loves the Distance Jogger. She adores them for travel since they’re comfy, lightweight and don’t wrinkle. She’s wearing a medium and says they also fit true to size. Those range XXS – 2X in the regular length and also come in tall lengths. I love that Athleta has continually gotten better at fitting more bodies. I hope that trend will continue into the various lengths!

Dressy Athleta Joggers Outfit Ideas

It’s no secret we love our joggers around here at TME, and some of the tech fabric styles at Athleta are just so versatile. It wasn’t a stretch for me to ask my mom to bring her Athleta joggers because she typically travels with them anyway. Who doesn’t love a great pair of easy-to-care-for, non-wrinkling, easy-to-style pants for a go-to travel piece? And check out how cute these dress up for a dinner or night out!

This tiger duster from Emerson Fry (available right now in an ivory print) is one of my favorite toppers for everything from shorts to joggers to tank dresses. These are made in small batches from sustainable modal and using eco-friendly dyes. We love love Emerson Fry. You may have seen my post raving about their caftans recently. I just want all the gorgeous floaty soft pieces for this time of year.

My mom adores a peasant style blouse for a pretty top that adds some femininity to the jogger look, but also covers without being hot. Anthropologie is her go-to for finding gorgeous peasant blouse options.

Casual Athleta Joggers Outfit Ideas

Yes, not only do we have the same smile (and fabulous model poses? heh) but we have the same P448 zebra sneakers…because my mom is rad and in her 60s and wears high-tops. (If you haven’t tried P448s they are seriously cool AND seriously cushiony.) Our zebra print pair is sold out, but this black and white printed pair gives the same vibe and is currently 40% off! We love love them with our joggers. You may have seen a cute pic of my mom in them during the Nordstrom sale last summer. We both found them to run true to size. I wear a 38 and am a solid 8. Mom is an 8.5 and wears a 39.

Mom paired an also-rad red graphic tee and mesh jacket with her Distance joggers. Love the pop of orangey red. And I love how her mesh jacket adds some cool texture and is a great lightweight option for warmer weather.

I recently got this adorable sleeveless sweatshirt at Anthro, and it’s a new fav. I ordered it in ivory, too. It runs a little big/long, so I went with the XS here. It’s not a heavy fuzzy sweatshirt fabric, more of a cotton terry, great for this time of year. The ruffles are just enough to add some cuteness without looking like too much.

Shop More Fav Athleta Joggers

There is pretty much an endless number of joggers we love from Athleta, and all of them come in extended sizing, too. So fab. Most are tech fabric like ours above, but there is a linen pair and a jersey pair below, too!

My love of fashion was definitely inspired by my mom’s great sense…and our frequent birthday trips to the mall when I was younger. We love going into our favorite stores and saying “ooh that’s cute” over and over together. It’s how we celebrate…what can I say? We always conclude with a comment about how we could really use a thesaurus on these trips.

These days we typically skip the mall, head to Anthropologie and then out to a yummy wood-fired pizza lunch at a favorite spot in The Pearl district here in Portland. Thankfully, my tastes have changed. Also thankfully, my mom was willing to let us have a peek at her amazing style now and again for an article! (My fav was our brunch post around Mother’s Day a few years ago. So fun and you will not meet a better party host than my mom.)

Thanks so much to my mom for putting up with me and for sharing her rad sense of style! If you have a favorite pair of joggers, as always, share the love below. Until next time…

xo,

L

  1. Words cannot describe how much I LOVE this post. Love the jogger outfit with the EF caftan. Love the joy you both exude. Love all of it. And I would love your mom to be a regular on TME. Thanks for sharing her with all of us.

    • Gosh thanks so much!! Not sure if I can talk her into doing this fulltime haha it’s a LOT of work, but I’ll see what else I can get her to share 🙂

  2. Your mom is so cool! I absolutely love seeing women her age rocking amazing outfits – makes me look forward to my 60s! Love this post!

  3. Your Mom, Sienna and Camper all in the same photo? I think the universe may tip from an overland of cuteness! I’m your mother’s age but nowhere close to her in style savvy. Love this post and agree that Athleta joggers are amazing. Glad you are all able to get together.

  4. Love this! SO cute! (Also love Athleta joggers — as a 6’0″ tall woman, I love that they carry tall sizes.)

It’s so much fun to see TME moms with their own stylish moms!

  5. Love this post, getting together with family after all this is truly the best ever, and you and your mom both look amazing. Hope I’m half that rad in my sixties.

  6. Your mom’s second outfit with the tee, joggers, mesh jacket and zebra hightops is PERFECTION! Love her style!

  7. Love everything about this post. I have trouble styling joggers beyond athletic looks. They are so comfortable and you’ve made them look stylish too. Love that you shared this post with your mom, so endearing. Thank you Laura!

  8. Please, please have your mom and one of her friends join TME. I’m close to her age and often wish you had someone like your mom. Most ‘mature’ styles are frumpy, I loved seeing it work for all ages!

  9. Amazing post, Laura! Brought tears to my eyes, seeing you and your mom so happy together. I feel we are a bit of kindred spirits, as I am also in the NW, and a design recruiter by trade. 🙂 Long time lurker, first time poster, I gotta say, you guys kept me going in the pandemic when I felt so isolated. Thank You. On the jogger front, love the Athleta Camo Farallon. Love that it’s cotton and camo. Perfect for NW spring/summer. What’s not to like?? Cheers!

  10. What a great post, Laura. You and your mom look beautiful! You two obviously had so much fun doing this photo shoot! Big hugs to you both!

  11. Oh my goodness! You both are so cute! I love how you both have similar styles.

And my mom and I bond over shopping and cute clothes too! 🙂

  12. How adorable are you two?! Love Athleta joggers. This is literally My favorite blog and am always so inspired by ya’ll. Much love!

  13. I remember your mom from that Mother’s Day post before! And the thing I remember thinking was “I love how she looks in that killer outfit”–not “she looks great for someone her age”–and that’s a huge difference. With retailers increasingly (and FINALLY) featuring models of all shapes, sizes and colors, I’ve been thinking the next expansion will be and should be that of age: showing models who are in their fifties, sixties and seventies. As other TME readers have mentioned, it was meaningful and helpful to me to see your mom rocking her look–it made me feel like I don’t have to hang up the fashion once I’m past a certain age. (It also made me wonder why that’s the accepted norm here in the U.S.–that we normal women leave fashion behind at a certain point.) Thank you both so much–your joy came through so loud and clear!

    • Aw thank you so much, Jennifer! What a lovely compliment. It was so much fun to do. I appreciate that it resonated and so appreciate your kind words!!

  14. Really enjoyed seeing how clothing works on older moms, like myself. Please do more of this. Or have your moms start something like this up. Thank you.

  15. I love posts with you and your mom, and this was fantastic. My daughter and I are like you and your mom. We love to shop and have similar tastes and similar style. Now we live in different cities, so I will buy two of something I like and I give one to her. I agree with the others above that seeing clothing on real people of different shapes, sizes and ages is one of the best things about your blog. I am in my 60s and I plan on dressing fun and with style as long as I can!
