Comfy, Beachy & Casual: My Most-Worn Tops Of The Year

I recently did a deep dive into my wardrobe and figured out what was my favorite (and most-worn) pair of jeans from 2022 (if you missed the post, find it here).

It’s genuinely so helpful for my OWN self to sort through my closet and figure out what I wore most (and, consequently, what I didn’t wear enough to keep a spot for 2023) that I thought it would be fun to do it all over again — this time with all of my tops.

While I know “tops” can be completely generic, I’m realizing that I pretty much had one favorite style of top this last year across all of the main categories: a favorite sweater (that just so happens to be part of a set), a favorite cardigan, a favorite graphic tee (well, an entire brand of graphic tees) and a favorite button-down top.

My 4 Fave Tops Of The Year, Ft. Free People, Jenni Kayne & Anine Bing

When it comes to style, I think mine can be best described as casual and comfort-focused, and these sweaters and tees score an A++ for comfort.

While you won’t find me in a ton of sequins or “going-out tops” (OK, I guess these tops don’t hit every category), you can depend on me to scope out all of the clothing that can go from a morning coffee run to a trip to the park with the kiddo. These tops I’m rounding up are IT, and they’re from some of my fave brands: Anine Bing, Free People and Jenni Kayne.

But don’t think of me as a slob, all of my fave tops also happen to be pretty dang versatile.

Add a pair of faux-leather pants, heeled booties and dab on a fab colored lipstick, and these comfort-focused sweaters and tees are just as glorious for date night.

In my opinion, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to be chic. It’s all in the styling, baby.

So without further ado, these are my four favorite tops of 2022, the (wildly comfortable) sweaters and graphic tees that can do it all! Let’s watch!

Favorite Graphic Tee of 2022: Anine Bing Walker Panther Tee

I don’t think anyone is doing it better in the graphic tee and sweatshirt game than Anine Bing.

Each 1 of Anine Bing's graphic tees feel lived-in & soft right out of the box, like this panther-print tee.

I’ve owned a good handful of graphic tees from Anine Bing over recent years, and they’re all so stinkin’ good. Each one feels lived-in and incredibly soft right out of the box. While some are more cropped in shape, I prefer longer lengths like this panther tee. And let’s not forget this signature tiger tee that pretty much put Anine Bing on the social media map (available in a sweatshirt too, which, YES, the sweatshirts are just as good).

Fit Notes: Tees run slightly loose (which is just right, IMO). I prefer a size medium in Anine Bing tees and a large in its sweatshirts.

Favorite Button-Down of 2022: Free People CP Shades Marella

I haven’t researched something as thoroughly as I researched cotton-gauze button-downs this summer since…college.

The Free People button-down top is fitted in the shoulders (at least for me, I'm pretty broad) but oversized everywhere else, especially in length.

The Double Cloth Buttondown Shirt from Free People took the gold medal by a long shot, simply for the plush softness that I couldn’t find anywhere else. This button-down is a part of Free People’s Care FP line, meaning it’s design is at least 50% of a certified eco-conscious fiber or process.

The top is fitted in the shoulders (at least for me, I’m pretty broad) but oversized everywhere else, especially in length. I love pairing this top with leggings, throwing it on with all types of jeans, and even using it as a bathing suit cover-up.

Fit Notes: The top is oversized, especially in length. I wear my true size medium.

Favorite Cardigan of 2022: Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan

The cardigan I’ve pinned on my Pinterest boards a thousand times (or so it seems) truly lives up to the hype.

Jenni Kayne's Cocoon collection is oversized, but I still prefer a size large for the extra drape & blanket-like feel.

I finally invested in Jenni Kayne’s most popular sweater, the Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan (when they were running a sale, let’s be real), and it’s absolutely fabulous. The cashmere is some of the softest I own and gets better with time, and the sweater is lightweight but still very luxe. I love wearing the cardigan both buttoned all the way up as a top as well as worn open.

Pro top: The sweater is incredible over a silk slip dress too!

Fit Notes: Jenni Kayne’s Cocoon collection is oversized, but I still prefer a size large for the extra drape and blanket-like feel.

Favorite Sweater (& Set!) of 2022: Free People Hailee Sweater Set

If you’re an avid reader of The Mom Edit, you’ve seen me reference and post about this sweater set constantly. It’s just that good.

Free People's Hailee Sweater Set is oversized & loose. When sizing down, it becomes more fitted & boxy. I love both depending on my mood.

The Hailee Sweater Set from Free People is one of the easiest throw-on-and-go outfits. Colors sell out quickly, but Free People does an amazing job at restocking new ones almost as fast. You can even catch this set at retailers like Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Revolve — but don’t hesitate, this set sells out even faster at those locations!

Fit Notes: I love and own both my true size medium as well as a small (the set I’m wearing in the video is a size small). The Hailee Sweater Set is naturally oversized and hangs loose all around. When sizing down, both the top and bottoms become more fitted and boxy. I love both sizes depending on my mood and the style I’m going for!
