An Easy Fall Outfit Idea With Straight-Leg Jeans

I do like a good outfit formula. And the best ones require little-to-no thought, can be easily tweaked, and will result in seemingly different outfits. But any time I’m dealing with changing silhouettes (skinny jeans vs. straight-leg jeans, for example), my outfit formulas need an update. Even if I start with something basic: jeans, sweater, boots, I often get tripped up in the execution: the boots don’t look right with the jeans, the sweater is off, etc.,

It’s the small details that can throw off my outfits.

An Easy Straight Leg Jeans Outfit Formula For Fall

So yeah — in order to get a successful outfit formula, I need to be more specific than ‘jeans and a sweater’. And since I’m wearing a ton of straight-leg jeans right now, I wanted to come up with an outfit formula specifically for those.

I need to be more specific than 'jeans & a sweater'. And since I'm wearing a ton of Levi's, I wanted to come up with an outfit formula for straight leg jeans.

Fall Outfit Formula: Straight-Leg Jeans + Short, Tuckable Sweaters + High-Shaft Chelsea Boots (& A Cute Bag)

As we’ve started transitioning away from skinny jeans (although I’ll never give them up completely)…sweater hemlines have started to rise.

High-rise, straight leg jeans almost always require a full tuck; I’ve gotta show off my waist, in order to really love the look. So a shorter sweater — one just long enough to tuck — is one of my top picks for fall. It gives me the look I want, without the extra bulk (even if it is a bulky, cable-knit sweater).

If interested, all of the pieces I’m wearing are from the NSale, and are still fully stocked (except for the jeans). I linked up similar pairs (and featured several more straight-leg jeans below.)

Shop My Fall Outfit Formula

For fun, I tried to pull some pieces into possible outfits: sweater, jeans, boots, bag. Many of the pieces featured below are pieces I already own and love. This exercise was done, in part, so I could evaluate which pieces in my existing wardrobe would naturally fit into this outfit formula.

Shop (Slightly) More Affordable Fall Outfits

It’s tough to find truly affordable boots, but there are a few that caught my eye. Here are three more outfits, where most pieces are under $150 (and some even under $100).

Can you guys easily see the outfits I’m envisioning? Let me know if pulling entire outfits together like this is helpful. But it’s dangerous, too, because now I want alllll of it.

Down girl, DOWN.

  1. New Proportions are so so tricky. I’ve been following Amy Smilovic ( Tibi founder)- she is such the pro at helping us figure out what works and why. Her highlights of IG are invaluable- especially her insights on color mixing, proportions ( Big/slim/skin), and her thoughts on Skin sandwiches, especially when dealing with new clothing styles. She’s great at dissecting 🙂

  2. Hi i need help! Having nothing to do with this post but S seems to be the expert on all the things…I bought the Vince Dress from the Nsale and i think i love it but i can’t figure out how to tie it! Would you please please please post or send me a tutorial? Here’s the issue that needs solving: when i tie it to create the cinched front, the back does not lie smoothly at all; it gets all bunchy with crazy amounts of extra fabric that seems to come from nowhere. Can you help? <3

  3. I have been looking for an inexpensive fisherman’s sweater in ivory to wear with straight-leg jeans. I live in the South, so at least part cotton is best. Anything else, and it will only get wear in the dead of winter. Love the Vince sweater you feature, but I can’t justify the price for my climate. Stumbled upon this and ordered it today. It’s part cotton. Hope it’s of decent quality and am sharing in case anyone else out there is looking …
