Denim overalls are, essentially, just like a pair of regular jeans, but with a little something extra up top.
The little something extra is not only a fun way to switch up your denim look, but it’s certainly practical. There’s no tugging on ill-fitted waistbands, you have more pockets to put things in, and they can be incredibly comfortable if you find the right pair.
Overalls really seem to be having a moment right now, and I am here for it.
6 Ways I’m Wearing Free People Ziggy Denim Overalls
I recently purchased the Ziggy Denim Overalls in the wash “bleach blue” after seeing what felt like a million people rave about them over the past year. They have a relaxed, slouchy fit that tapers down just slightly at the leg, large pockets (which I especially love) and are available in a multitude of colors (as well as corduroy).
Feeling like you might look a bit too young when wearing overalls? There are a few easy tricks to help with that. To keep it looking chic, you can swap your sneakers for flats or heels, layer on some dainty jewelry, slick back your hair, or rock a bold lip color.
I personally embrace the youthful energy of overalls (and no, I don’t mind going to the bathroom while wearing them) and find they’re super-easy and fun to wear in so many ways. I’m breaking down the six ways I’m rocking them for spring and the summer this year!
Fit Notes: TTS, I’m wearing a medium in the Ziggy Denim Overalls. They’re loose and slouchy, which is the look I wanted and same as advertised, but some reviews mention they sized down to have them a bit more fitted.
1. Still Cold: Denim Overalls + A Sweater
Someone forgot to tell Michigan that it’s springtime, so while I wait for the temps to lift out of the 30s, I’m still rocking sweaters.
The relaxed fit of the Ziggy Denim Overall makes it convenient to rock all sorts of tops underneath, even the warmest (and possibly bulky) of sweaters. This look would be great with boots but, you know, I gotta create spring where I can, so Birkenstock clogs it is (at least my toes are covered).
2. Feelin’ Lazy: Denim Overalls + A Hoodie
I love how overalls make even a hoodie feel like a purposeful piece to your outfit. I’ll throw on my favorite comfy sweatshirts underneath my overalls when I’m lazy or just not particularly in a mood to wear anything else, and doing so feels more unexpected and edgy than regular jeans. No one will know I was just feeling lazy and cold when getting dressed.
3. Class ‘Em Up: Denim Overalls + Heeled Boots
Heels are a fantastic way to make denim overalls feel more grown-up and less like you’re rocking OshKosh B’gosh, if you know what I mean. While I don’t own any classic heels, any pair you would throw on with your jeans will easily class up denim overalls.
These booties are some of my most favorite and the go-to choice for date night and special occasions. I love the extra height and the chunky heel. If you’re a fan of bold colors, check out these boots in the new “sour apple” color — it has me swooning.
4. Beachy & Breezy: Denim Overalls + A Bralette or Longline Bra
It’s a little comical when you look at the models who are wearing the Ziggy Denim Overalls on Free People’s site. Most of them do not have any top on at all. While that isn’t a look I can personally pull off, I loved how it put all of the attention onto the overalls alone and felt almost beachy + breezy.
Pairing a cute bralette or longline bra (even just a tighter crop top) with said overalls is an easy way to get that same barely-there effect, while still holding everything securely in place. If you want more coverage, tightening the straps will pull the overalls up higher and closer to your body. On the flip side, you can loosen the straps completely for an even more beachy look (and you get a lot more length in the legs).
You can also throw the overalls over your swimsuit to and from the pool. It’s an easy cover-up but also that same beachy, barely-there look that makes the overalls the focus. I can’t wait to rock this for summertime.
5. A Fresh Look: Wear Denim Overalls With One Strap Up
Opening up one side of the top of the overalls is easy, quick and incredibly effective for giving your outfit a fresh, zesty look.
You can do it with any of the outfits, but I love it with the longline bra. It feels relaxed and breezy but in just the right ways.
6. Totally Comfy: Denim Overalls + A Tee & Sneakers
A classic tee, sneakers and overalls is the total comfy package. Pairing with dainty jewelry helps glow-it-up a bit, too.
Having one side unhooked is not just for the beachy look, it’s really cute with a tee, too.
