Sometimes when I’m in a fashion rut and don’t know what to wear I focus on finding a fun statement piece to style up.
Enter, August. Typically a fashion rut month for me. But just around the corner is the loveliest time of year when jackets are back and boots are the go-to again. Yep, I love fall and this year you might just see me rocking something unexpected…like this blue corduroy trench coat I found during the Nordstrom sale…It’s such a rad piece.
So here I go, here I go, here I go again…with more styling fun things up (sorry I couldn’t get that to rhyme, it’s August.)
Trench (M) (or this) | Top | Pants (S) | Boots | Bag
A lot of the pieces I styled here with the coat are items I grab consistently from my forever closet. While some of them are out of stock or past season, I’ve linked similar finds that *are* available so they can become your forever faves as well.
And here are a few blue trench coat options to choose from, if you want a shorter style or a different fabric option:
It’s Trench Coat Season: 5 Fall Outfits For A Bold Jacket
And while I do love this coat, it’s not as much about the specific coat for me as it is about the blue. The blue! Not in your blue period? Other colors that could work with the same styling are deep burgundy, grass green, classic tan (if you’re feeling classic) and even Barbie pink. Several of the looks are based on a neutral monochromatic outfit under the jacket. But I’m over here having a blue moment right now, so on to the outfits!
1. With Palazzo Jeans
Trench (M) (or similar) | Tee (similar) | Jeans (29) | Boots (or similar) | Clutch | Strap
This is my favorite combo: wide-leg jeans and the looonng jacket. I added a fun little pop a la the Clare V clutch and it’s kind of a whimsical but somehow still cool result.
2. With A White Denim Skirt
Trench (M) (or similar) | Tee (similar) | Skirt | Boots (or these)
Ok…where would we wear a long blue trench and a white denim skirt? IDK but I want to wear it everywhere. I don’t even care haha.
I love this combo. Let’s just say wear it where it might be cool outside but then you’re gonna be inside in a packed place and you want to hang onto the last days of summery-ness. Or to the grocery store. Or wherever the hell you want.
3. With All Black + Ivory Accessories
Trench (M) (or this) | Top | Pants (S) | Boots | Bag
This look is probably the easiest and most practical as a fall outfit. I love that the ivory boots and bag keep the blue/black combo from feeling too heavy.
4. With Taupe & White Sneakers
Trench (M) (or similar) | Sweater (or this) | Pants (similar) | Sneakers
Taupe and bright blue are a match made in heaven and you know I had to throw in a sporty option here for my fellow sneakerheads.
5. With A LBD
Trench (M) (or similar) | Dress (similar) | Heels (similar)
So, the team here wanted to see the coat with a dress…and it turns out all I really have right now that isn’t a sundress is an LBD. I do think the blue trench coat really livens up the ol’ black dress and could be perfect for the office or an event.
I went with a softer color heel here (tiny animal print to be exact) and I think it’s a nice combo with the visually strong black dress and bright blue trench. A nude heel would also work. The trench really pulls its weight in the ‘fun’ category so that shoes and accessories can take a bit of a backseat.
Hope this was interesting and got some pre-fall outfit ideas coming your way. Let me know if you have found any great statement coats you love for this year!

Great post, Laura! Love the comments about where you can wear the outfit with the white skirt, lol.
Haha thanks, Kristina. I needed a reminder myself ha.
