A Summer Capsule Wardrobe For Weekend Getaways

We spent Mother’s Day weekend in DC.  It’s an easy train ride from Philly, and when we go, we tend to keep things pretty low-key.  We almost always stay at the Capitol Hill Hotel, and spend the weekend wandering around, getting oysters, and hitting up our favorite nerdy game store, Labyrinth, for new board games (more on this later).  My kids associate DC with ‘that cool game store’ more than they do the Capitol Building.

This particular weekend had both 90 degree temps and 50 degree temps in store for us, so it was the perfect place to test out the little capsule wardrobe I plan on wearing all summer long.

What I Packed

Some of these pieces didn’t get used during this particular trip (high heels and swimsuit, I’m looking at you)…but should still be included in a well-rounded capsule wardrobe.  (This collage is clickable, BTW.)

Tops: FP Cleo Tee // La Vie Linen Tank // Eileen Fisher Sweater

Bottoms: BLANKNYC ‘Astor’ Shorts // AG Farrah // Joe’s Terry Shorts

Bathing Suit & Accessories (top row): Crochet One-Piece // Palm Print Backpack // Sam Edelman Patti Sandal // (bottom row) Elizabeth and James Sunnies // Clare V. Clutch // UGG Kamile Sandal

For Traveling

Jeans, always – I hate when my legs stick to the back of the seat.  Comfy shoes, and an easy tank.

Outfit Details

tank: Free People Cleo Tee (xs for reference) – love that this one is like a muscle tank…but sexier.  It requires a pretty bra, though.

bra: Madewell Longline Lace Bralette (medium for reference) – this one is so impossibly pretty and comfy

jeans: AG The Farrah (size 25 for reference) – my new favs.  Exactly like AG’s The Legging jeans, but with a higher rise.

sandals: UGG Kamile

on the boys: see below

For Lounging and Hangin’ Around

No trip is ever complete without a little downtime….

Outfit Details

tank: Free People Cleo Tee (xs for reference) – love that this one is like a muscle tank…but sexier.  It requires a pretty bra, though.

shorts: Joe’s French Terry Shorts (xs) – love these things. Wearing them in place of sweatpants when it’s hot.

sweater: Eileen Fisher Organic Cotton Sweater (xs) – another piece that goes with everything.  I’ll be wearing it to the beach the summer, too.

sandals: UGG Kamile

For City Exploring

It was so freaking hot…until it wasn’t. Layers, comfy shoes, and a lightweight backpack were key.

Outfit Details

fancy tank: Rebecca Taylor Embroidered Linen Tank (size small for reference) – almost completely sold out SO annoying, but I found some additional options here:

shorts: BlankNYC Aster shorts in delaytionship (size 24 for reference) – my exact wash is almost sold out, but they also come in Unsung hero (a very similar wash).

backpack: Herschel Palm Print – the smaller one is sold out, but the larger size is here.  Truth be told, I found the straps a little scratchy, so I’m going to keep looking.  I’m seriously considering some of these…..

sandals: UGG Kamile

For Getting Fancy

Or as fancy as one can get in comfort sandals, haha.

Outfit Details

dress: Splendid X Margherita Positano dress (xs for reference) – This dress is so easy to wear.  It’s a little low (which never bothers me – but would be an easy alteration if it did), it’s nice and cool (linen), and not overly tight.  The midi-ish length isn’t dowdy thanks to well-placed side slits, and the PATTERN:  GORGEOUS.  Just for fun, I’ve rounded up a few other dresses that fit into my wear-with-everything-day-or-night requirements….

bag: Clare V. Stripe Leather Foldover Clutch – Clare V – my forever favs (made in the USA, too)

sandals: UGG Kamile – I’m so obsessed with these sandals – they’re all over my IG feed.  The insane pillow-like comfort (NOT JOKING) gets me every time.  The only potential problem?  The tan color is almost completely sold out.  The black is cute, too, but if you are really hoping to find a brown/tan sandal, here are a few others that I’ve either tried on or own.

on the boys: our definition of “dressy” is a little loose with these guys, but here’s what’s working for us:

Anyone else soooo ready for summer?

xo,

A huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!  As always, all thoughts, opinions, and product choices are my own.  And readers, thank you for your continued support!  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated!

  1. Would any of the other contributors be interested in doing this same idea (summer capsule wardrobe) at a lower price point? I love Nordstroms (seriously, love), but they are out of reach for me. Thanks for considering it!

  2. I’ve lived in DC (or a close-in suburb) for 15 years and love seeing my town in your pics! I ‘m so glad you hit up the Sculpture Garden fountain. It was STEAMY the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend (before the temp crash and the rain on Sunday). I love your sandals!

  3. I love that your older son wears a man bun! My nine year old has very similar hair (dirty blonde, long, and curly) and I love seeing little boys rock the long hair!!

  4. Love the look and ease of a backpack when traveling with kids but do you keep your wallet/phone in there? Just wonder if you worry about pickpockets….

  5. For me it depends where I’m traveling. If it’s a place known for pickpockets I use a messenger bag and carry it on the front.
