Give thanks to the Denim Gods, the almighty Giver of Great Sales, or more realistically, the Person In Charge Of Online Sales At J.Crew, for seeing it fit to bless us with some of the most amazing sales as of late, putting me in a J.Crew-buying frenzy. I’ve always loved their denim, and for a really long time J.Crew was my favorite place to shop for jeans, but it’d been a while since I’d bought some. Thanks to all the great deals they’re having, I’ve been able to rediscover my love for their jeans. In the end, I bought six pair of jeans (five, if you don’t count the pair I bought TWICE and several of which I’ve been eyeing for ages) and had a massive try-on session.
Five Pairs of J.Crew Jeans I’m Loving Right Now
From ripped vintage to button-fly, to cropped flares, to skinny medium-wash jeans, to sustainable denim, to the softest jean fabric I’ve ever laid hands, here are the results.
Pair 1: ‘The Jeans We All Loved’
Vintage Straight Jean in Ripped and Repaired (Size 28 – Runs a little Large)
By far, these were the best-selling pair of jeans from the J.Crew sale a few weeks ago. We all went gaga over these. I loved them so much, I accidentally bought two identical pairs. My thoughts: an updated design of a J.Crew classic, these are a shout-out to the Old School J.Crew jeans we loved in the ’90s. These have a good amount of stretch in them, which makes them very comfortable and well-fitting but the fabric has some weight to it, so the quality feels great. I love the way they look on, and they cover so well. But with the extra amount of stretch these offer, I would order down one size because my usual 28 size felt a little baggy, especially around the stomach. These are the first pair of mid-rise jeans I’ve tried on and actually liked the way they looked on me. They fit just above the hip and cover my tummy without any ungainly side lumps, which is always my worry with jeans that aren’t high rise. Final Take: Classic style with ample stretch for curves and lots of movement.
Pair 2: ‘The Unexpected Favorites’
Vintage Straight Eco Jean in Medium Wash (Size 28 – TTS)
I bought these partly because they were top-rated and on super-sale, but mostly because they were made using renewable energy, solar power and miniature windmills at one of the world’s leading sustainable denim factories that is ALSO Fair Trade Certified™ and offers employees better wages and conditions. I wasn’t nearly as excited for this pair as I was some of the other jeans — these seemed plain and simple and lacked the vintage details that the other pairs offered, but in the end, these were one of the most flattering pairs of the bunch. They are also soft and stretchy, and SOO comfortable (think wearing yoga pants), and they go with everything. I love the ankle hem detailing and the color. Final Take: Perfect pair of everyday jeans, for under $40, they’re worth it!
Pair 3: ‘Button Fly Cropped Flares’
Point Sur 10″ high-rise demi-boot jean with button fly (Size 28 – TTS)
These have everything I love in a pair of jeans: super high-rise, vintage detailing and a button fly. I’ve been on the lookout for a pair of cropped flares to incorporate into my daily look, and these are pretty much perfect. The denim is stretchy, and the button-fly front and square pockets are flattering and deflect from the tummy area. The edgy raw hem balances out the clean-cut, retro sailor-esque pockets and dark wash. These jeans are “on-trend without looking like you’re trying too hard,” as one reviewer summed up perfectly. I found that these fit true to size, although a few customers said they ran big for them. Final take: If you only have one pair of cropped flares, make it these.
Pair 4: ‘The Softest Fabric Ever’
Point Sur Hightower Straight Jean in blue haze Vintage Stretch (Size 28- TTS)
J.Crew’s Point Sur jeans are their collection of vintage-inspired denim with modern detailing, which basically sums up my favorite styles of jeans. This pair features a 10″ high-rise, a slim leg and a cool raw hem. What I love about these jeans is the fabric. They’re made from this amazing premium Turkish denim that looks and feels like super-soft 100% cotton, but with lots of stretch (and thicker than the previous two jeans). AND I don’t know how they did it, but I actually LIKE the way my butt looks in these. My favorite thing is the unique side hem on these that give them an extra vintage look. The downside: I couldn’t get the zipper to lay flat, it just looked bulky, and I felt like that accentuated my tummy area, although this could probably be fixed with an iron and some starch. Final Take: Comfy, butt-enhancing but in the end, like a million of my other jeans.
Pair 5: ‘The Ones I Couldn’t Button Up’
Point Sur Kickout Crop Jean in Vintage Wash with Let Down Hem (Size 28 – Runs Very SMALL!)
I was most excited about this pair because I’ve been looking for light-wash, kick-out crop jeans for a while now, but I couldn’t get them buttoned — not even close! Watch out — these have no stretch! Final take: they have promise, will order a size up and try again.
