Obviously we’ll be skiing this weekend. I mean….it’s snowing. And I’m pretty sure it’s the first – no wait – the second snow of the year. If I can manage to get my shizz together, we may even leave tonight.
BWAH HA HA HA!
Good one, S. [wipes tears from eyes] My shizz will never, in fact, ever be described as “together”.
But we may still leave tonight.
We’re kicking off Spring Denim Month! Throughout the month, look for Dressing Room Selfie articles as we all attempt to find the lightwash denim of our dreams. I’m still in the thick of “research” but these are the most comfortable pair of high-rise jeans I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying on. High-rise denim meets pajamas. True Story.
What to wear under racerback tops? Check out this gorgeousness by ThirdLove. More soon.
OMG THE TAUPE BOOTIES ARE BACK. Remember my nude Lucky Brand boots from last year? I just found them back in stock. They’ve been rebranded as “Kamby” and the color I have is sesame. These are still one of my all-time best purchases. (Also available at Amazon or Nordstrom.)
Patio Game Strong. Crate and Barrel has 20% off all outdoor furniture this weekend. All I want is that dark blue sofa.
In honor of International Women’s Day last week, here are a few gems we loved:
#MOREWOMEN. ElleUK edited the men out of photos of people of power and influence, showing exactly how few women are truly represented worldwide. We are 37% of MBA graduates….but only 4.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs. (Thanks for the find, Scotti!)
It’s 2:38PM, time to go home! On International Women’s Day, Iceland announced that it would officially require gender pay equality. The Icelandic women have been peacefully protesting since 1999 about under-representation…and, more recently, this past October, many women left their offices at 2:38PM each day (due to the gender pay gap, any hours worked after that were unpaid). Well done, Iceland.
Three women-run businesses that I love: Shop Buru, a online boutique that caters to the post-partum and nursing mamas….Tuxe Bodywear, created and owned by women (and a fervent supporter of ambitious women)…..and Colleen Rothschild, the beauty company whose cleansing balm I can’t live without.
Once upon a time…I just bought Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls for my two little guys. It’s a beautiful book about the real-life accomplishments of women throughout history – both ancient and modern. Each write-up includes a portrait that was commissioned especially for the book, all done by women artists. It’s almost an art piece, yet the writing is engaging. Both of my boys love it – the stories are human stories (hardship, sacrifice, loss, perseverance) – and the fact that they are exclusively about women is, to them, no big surprise. Why wouldn’t the stories be about women? Raines did wonder about the title….he wanted to know why this book was only for girls – “I like these stories, too, Mom.” I perhaps wish the authors had called it “Good Night Stories About Rebel Girls”…but it did prompt a discussion of women’s rights throughout history, so perhaps the more provocative title was a smart move. In any case, whether you have little rebel girls or little rebel guys….this is a fantastic book. (And will most likely become my go-to birthday gift for all of our friend’s kids.)
The best thing I read on International Women’s Day…..So often, in a missguided attempt at support, we still resort to labels. Women are STRONG!! Women are FEMININE!! Women are INTUITIVE!! I mean….ok, none of those things are bad, but labels, even good ones, are so limiting. Sure, some women are strong (sometimes), some women are feminine (sometimes) and some women are intuitive (sometimes)….but the ones that aren’t? They’re no less womanly….they’re no less woman. Which is why, on our IG account (@themomedit) we simply posted the quote by Coco Chanel: “A woman should be two things: exactly who and what she wants.”
And then, later that day, I received this in an email from Lululemon, who managed to put into words alllll the things I was feeling. In short, they nailed it. I hope it speaks to you as much as it did to me.
If you feel strong, or fragile, or strong and fragile. If you sometimes laugh at your mistakes and sometimes cry at them. Whether you are loud, or quiet, or are sometimes loud and sometimes quiet. If you are a mother, not yet a mother, a stepmother, will never be a mother, or never want to be a mother. If some days you battle the feelings of being infinitely worthless, and some days you recognize your infinite worth. If you take a stand for what you believe in, or don’t know what to believe in. Whether you are full of love, or fear, or sometimes love and sometimes fear. If you feel most beautiful in high heels and dark lips surrounded by bright lights, or most beautiful with a naked face gazing up at bright stars. If some days you refuse to give up, and other days you have nothing left to give. Whether you feel lost, are searching, or have found yourself. If you take a step forward, or a step back, but no matter what, you keep stepping.
Wherever you are, in all that you are, we honour you.
