Fall! Fall has arrived with a gray, drizzly bang here in the Pacific Northwest. It literally arrived the day I tried most of these pieces on. And, although it was a really abrupt entrance, it’s gotten me super excited for cool weather, pumpkin everything and, of course…jackets.
I’m not the only one – several readers have been asking us to do a roundup of soft blazers. Many of you are looking for something like the one S wore in Europe (see her pics here), but with a lower price tag. Knit jackets are mom gold: comfy yet structured. I started searching only for knit blazers, but expanded my search to include of-the-moment bomber jackets as well. Come along and see both the wins and the bombs…(pun intended).
Ok. So…I didn’t save the best for last. I saved it for first! I LOVE this bomber from Asos. Wow. The color is a fabulous ivory-meets-peach. I hadn’t jumped on the bomber bandwagon before now, but this. This got me. The black trim really sets it off and makes it so wearable with black pants. It’s just the right amount of sporty and it’s comfy.
Sizing Note: Go with a fitted size for a feminine look, especially for us petite ladies. (Also, it comes in petite sizing.)
Styling: I love pairing bomber jackets with something feminine, like heels or a skirt to balance out the sporty-ness. Of course, I would wear them with hi tops for a casual urban vibe, then add a few delicate details, like lipstick and jewelry.
This navy bomber is also from Asos. I am love loving navy and black this fall together and this one is perfection with black skinnies. It’d look great with gray or light denim, as well. Again, keep the fit small on your bombers. (See below…)
Sadly, this bomber was way too big. About half of the time I wear a medium in jackets, but here that formula backfired. A small would have been way better. And now, (giant frowny face) it’s sold out! Ok, so new rule is order in both sizes in question before the darn thing sells out. Dang it. It has a Members-only vibe that I like too and some faux leather details that are really lovely. It’s really cool. Also, LOVE these Joe’s Jeans gray skinny jeans. Gray skinnies are not always flattering, but this wash is perfect.
This black option is a great basic. It’s very comfortable yet has enough structure. There’s enough room to layer over a button-down or thin sweater underneath.
Styling: Destroyed denim and blazers is one of my all-time favorite pairings. The blazer sharpens up destroyed denim’s casual feel and the denim makes the blazer less stuffy. They’re truly a match made in heaven, in my opinion! Also, try layering this blazer over another long-sleeve shirt. Push the sleeves up and let the other shirt peek out at the cuffs.
This striped blazer from Anthropologie is another solid option. The salesperson who helped me swears by this jacket. She took it on a trip to Europe and wore it daily. It is so soft, but still has enough structure to be flattering…unlike the look on my face below…
…I have no idea. Moving on…this blazer is from Asos, as well. The color is great. I like the longer length, too, as it would work with leggings and a longer sweater really well. I didn’t love that it felt a bit under-finished in the details. The edges of the lapels roll ever so slightly giving it a less-structured look than the others. The sleeves are ruched, as well, which I like, but then you don’t have the option to wear them longer. I think I give it a 7 out of 10. But the color gets a 10.
This jacket from Express is another favorite, for sure. The fabric is stretchy but has a slight sheen – more like a traditional work blazer. It’s very comfy and the most structured of the blazers I tried. I adore the military style and the buttons. They add more interest than some of the more basic jackets. If you can pull off wide-leg jeans or pants, this would look amazing with them. Otherwise, I’d pair it with denim blue skinny jeans or even deep burgundy jeans or pants. Ooh.
Ok, yes, this last jacket is not a bomber really OR a blazer, but it was such a great, comfy find I had to include it. It’s the most sweatshirt-like of my finds and is super soft. It has moto details, but not too many. It’s comfy enough to wear around the house all day like a hoodie, but cool enough to wear on date night. It’s definitely my new go-to jacket for fall comfort.
