Can we talk breast cancer for a sec? I promise to keep it both light and short. I know it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I know by now you’re probably sick of hearing about it, but if there’s one thing that you should absolutely add to your ‘self-care’ regime it’s this: Know Thy Boobs.

I was just talking to my oncologist about this topic yesterday. Breast self-exams? They’re a good thing, generally, except for the fact that they can also cause guilt and stress for those of us who never seem to find the time. And it turns out that the self-exam isn’t exactly the important part. The newest mantra coming from the breast cancer folks?: Breast Self-Awareness. (Or some phrase like that.) This is when you simply…Know Thy Boobs. Guys tend to be inherently good at this — I’ve had a few docs mention that a large number of husbands have been responsible for finding cancer in their wife’s breasts, simply because they’re all over that…”breast awareness” thing, haha.

And why do we care? About Knowing Thy Boobs and Breast Self-Awareness and all of that? I know you know it, but the reason bears repeating: Early detection of breast cancer is your best hope for beating breast cancer. Five years ago, when I sat in my oncologist’s office debating whether or not chemo was in my future…she looked me in the eyes and said, “Shana, your cancer was caught early. That means you have a shot — ONE shot — at beating it. This is your one shot at a lifetime without cancer. This is it. If your cancer comes back…you will be dealing with breast cancer for the rest of your life.”

That’s the difference early detection makes. That difference is HUGE. That difference is EVERYTHING. That difference is, quite possibly, life. Needless to say, I did the chemo. And then the Tamoxifen after that. It is never lost on me — not for a freaking second of any given day — that I am one of the lucky ones. Early detection of cancer is still cancer, sure…but it feels like a gift.

So when Colleen Rothschild reached out about her “Breast” Friend Self-Exam Butter — a product designed to help you remember to do your self-exams and give you the softest boobs ever — I was on board. If you recall, I use her products as my cleansing and anti-aging nighttime routine, and they are fantastic. (They are also 25% off right now, but more about that in a sec..)

The lotion is basically a whipped body lotion with three butters (including murumuru butter, which I just like to say out loud) and five oils. It has a light floral scent and absorbs quickly into the skin. But the real reason it should earn a spot in your bathroom is the design. This little tub is cute, quirky, and a realllllly good reminder to KNOW THY BOOBS. (It would make a great girlfriend gift, too.)

So. Bottom line? Do your self-exams if you’d like (this little tub comes with instructions). If not, just…ya know…feel yourself up, pay attention and #KnowThyBoobs. Rub in some lotion, make it routine — be Breast Self-Aware. And if ever you (or your partner) detects a lump, especially something that makes you go, ‘hmmm’ (mine sure did)…go get it checked out. Don’t let fear prevent you from Knowing Thy Boobs.

Thank you to Colleen Rothschild for sponsoring this post. This cause is very near-and-dear to my heart and we could all use a friendly reminder to #KnowThyBoobs. And readers, thank you for your continued support!  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated.

  1. I love the CR products. I started using the face oil and extreme recovery cream after your post a year or so ago and I love them both!
