I got some questions on my recent straight-leg jeans post about what shoes to wear with them for warmer months. Well, it turns out I’ve been covering straight-leg jeans since 2017, haha, so I have lots of thoughts on the matter!
10 Foolproof Shoes To Wear With Straight-Leg Jeans
Not all shoes vibe with straight-leg jeans, so I thought running through pairs that do…that I’m currently loving best…would be a helpful article to offer. Granted, sometimes it depends on the specific pair of jeans and the specific pair of shoes, but overall, these styles tend to be most flattering for me and least fussy, especially for warmer weather. We’ve already covered warm boots, so let’s get into what we wear with straight-leg jeans for spring, summer and early fall months, shall we?
1. Easy Mules
A cute flat mule is my go-to shoe for just about any jeans style, but they look especially cute with straight-leg. They’re flattering in that they show the ankle and are a little dressier and more feminine, but they also aren’t uncomfortable or fussy. Obviously, they’re not for commuting long distances (I have more options for that below) but for an easy slip-on style that can take you on errands or out to eat, or just to wear around the house (I wear mine like slippers many days) you just can’t beat ’em. (I’m loving this Free People pair if you’re looking for a tan/neutral!)
2. Pretty, Low Heels
This girl can hardly rock high heels at all anymore. I honestly never really did. But give me a cute kitten or low heel and I can handle that for a date night or a few hours. I always found a lower heel harder to style with skinny jeans, but with straight-leg, they work! It’s just a bit more of a flattering balance in the leg with this style of jeans. Love this pairing.
3. My Favs, High-Top Sneaks
High-tops are some of my go-to shoes. A straight-leg that isn’t too cropped can sometimes be tough to wear with a high-tops, but I find that cuffing just the right amount can do the trick (that’s typically about 1.5-2″ for me.) If you’re looking to pair a cute graphic tee with your high-top look (you know it’s a fav combo of mine) I just got this one in from Athleta, designed by Philadelphia artist Kendra Dandy, 100% or proceeds are donated to BuyFromaBlackWoman.org. SO cute. Love love.
High-tops are also fab with cropped straight-leg jeans and can make up that space between the hem and shoe just like a boot can, like I have on below. Ooh, and I’m digging these white gum sole high-tops from PerryCo Shoes (a Black-owned business)!
4. Flat Sandals
This is my favorite for warmer months. It’s not so hot here that I don’t wear jeans in the summer, but having cute sandals on with them is a go-to combo. A pair that matches your skin tone will look most seamless with any shade of jeans. Pons Avarcas come in a nice range of colors to match a variety of skin tones and are some of my favorite sandals besides my Birks. You can also find some colors here on sale.
They’re one of the few shoes that looks good with a cropped straight-leg and a full-length straight-leg. Not many shoes, besides the mules really, can boast that! I can’t decide if I’m quite on board with full-length again, but it’s good to know I have a shoe in my arsenal in case I do get there? Haha.
5. Clog Sandals
Clog sandals look cute with so much, but I love them with my straight-leg jeans. Had to give them a shout-out for sure! I love the height they give without having to walk around with your foot all angled in a traditional pump. The upper on this pair I’ve linked is so soft and doesn’t require a break-in! They’re also under $100! I’m not really a flatform girl, but that could also give you a similar look if you’re not a clog person.
6. Low Profile Sneakers
If your straight-leg jeans aren’t very cropped or cuffing just doesn’t work for you, go with a low-profile sneaker that shows some ankle. This opens up to many different styles, honestly, like our favorite adidas Superstars, Stan Smiths, Golden Goose, or the Vintage Havanas I have on above. Even a fun sporty running shoe works with this combo. The key is to show some skin like I mentioned.
7. Lug Sole Loafers
Have you heard me rave on and on enough about lug sole loafers? Haha. I love them. What can I say? Regular loafers are just too classic or too dainty for me I think, but add a thicker sole like a lug sole or platform and they have that weight that I think is more flattering with a straight leg.
8. Slip-On Sneakers
This is just a cute easy comfy style to wear. There are also a ton of slip-on sneaker options, but these two are some absolute favs. The cushiony UGG Chayze slip-on above is incredibly comfy and the checkered Vans are a longtime closet staple for my graphics-loving self. They come in a comfy platform version, too, if you want a little more cushion and height. Ooh or check out these rad slip-ons made from recycled rugs? A different vibe but so cool!
9. The Frye Ray Harness Bootie
This style may be a little more specific but is also one of my favorite shoes to wear in warmer temps. I adore these booties so, so much and wore them all last spring, summer and fall…with everything, including straight-leg jeans. I’ve looked and looked and this Frye Ray Harness pair are hands-down my favorite for a style that doesn’t lean too trendy or dated. If you see any similar pairs, let me know! Right now this is the only option in this style I found that are Laura-approved. Heh.
10. Sporty Slides
These have been one of my most-worn pairs of sandals over the last two summers. They’re just so easy and a little more chic-than-sporty with their smaller profile and side stud detail. Of course, you can go full-on sporty and throw on some adidas 3-stripe slides if you so desire! I’m really digging the puffy leather options this year, too.
One of the main things we continue to experiment with here is what shoe pairings to wear with certain types of jeans. Now that many of us are moving away from skinny jeans–that seem to work with just about every kind of shoe–it does get trickier. Again, this is like my favorite thing to do ever…to try this stuff out. So, I will continue to do just that for y’all and I hope it continues to be something helpful to refer to!
