Ever since having my major, life changing realization that Birkenstock sandals are not actually the devil and that they are very much so one of the greatest shoe inventions of all time, I have really been wanting to work up some fun, more dressy ways to wear them. NOT that I don’t love them with an everyday, basic tee and cut-offs, because…um. That’s the momiform of all momiforms over here.
What has really gotten me excited about Birkenstocks is that, while they are most definitely a casual shoe built for comfort, they do not have to be restricted to a casual outfit formula. Music to myyyy ears, lovies. I think they can (and should) be worn with more exciting, interesting pieces – things you maybe wouldn’t usually think to wear them with. At least, that’s what I’ve found.
…and I came to this fantastic conclusion by trying on a bunch of random stuff with my own Birks one afternoon – pieces that I’d usually pair with a more dressy shoe. I landed on six outfits that I would happily wear out of the house! By moving away from the tee and cut-offs realm, the Birkenstocks were made worthy of a real fashion moment (and by fashion moment, I mean me taking an uninterrupted mirror selfie).
Without further ado, here are those outfits…
#1: Birkenstocks With A Romper
romper: Paris Sunday Pleated Romper (wearing size small) – cute and comfortable. It is a bit short in the torso, though, FYI. I am 5’10 and it gave me a slight wedgie.
sandals: Birkenstock Mayari (Stone Pull Up, wearing size 40) – I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
bag: Rebecca Minkoff Fringe Julian Backpack – adore. can’t carry it enough! Now, having already had a Julian in deep blue, I knew the magnificence that is a Rebecca Minkoff backpack. It was pretty easy to click ‘buy’ on this white version.
earrings: White Tortoise Hoop Earring – not the exact pair I am wearing, but similar. I’ve been loving the tortoise earring trend.
#2: Birkenstocks With An Off-The-Shoulder Blouse
top: Ella Moon Kenzie Top (TTS, wearing S) – I’ve been steering clear of off-the-shoulder styles, simply because I don’t want to deal with pulling them up constantly…BUT this one. This one actually stays up, because of the elastic ruching on top. The other plus? It can be worn on the shoulder, too. I mean…winner winner.
shorts: BlankNYC Fray Hem Short (fits smallish) – wearing size 28, which is a size up from my norm. They were a tiny bit loose, but I liked the feel – stretchy and comfortable. Also, did go up my bum, so that’s nice.
sandals: Birkenstocks Mayari (Stone Pull Up) – wearing size 40. I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
necklace: Baublebar Nova Tennis Necklace – my favorite piece of jewelry right now. It adds fun to anything I’m wearing….which is usually a basic tee or tank and cutoffs.
clutch: Sole Society Hawna Clutch (teal) – not the exact one I am carrying, but still Sole Society and the pretty, teal color. I like that it adds a color to the whole outfit and highlights the blue/green in the necklace.
#3: Birkenstocks With A Matching Top & Shorts
top: BP. Linen Ruffle Sleeve Top (TTS, wearing Small) – cropped, but not crazy short…worked really well with a higher waist short…like the ones below.
bottom: BP. Linen Shorts (TTS)- I thought I had a small, but turns out its a Medium. They fit okay, but would have fit better in a small…these were loose at the waist.
bag: French Baskets Backpack – love the shop that makes these, really like the bag for the pool…and looking forward to bringing it along to the beach this Summer.
sandals: Birkenstocks Mayari (Stone Pull Up) – wearing size 40. I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
#4: Birkenstocks With An Embroidered Tunic Top + Cut Offs
Sunglasses: WearMe Pro Aviators – polarized lens, affordable. I wear them all of the time. Also, prime shipping!
Top: Free People Fiesta Nueva Tunic (TTS, wearing Small) – I say its true to size, but could probably size down. Definitely needs to be worn with a bralette or something that can peek out a bit. I’m wearing this FP Adella Bralette. The back of the top has a cool, low back with a tie, tassel. It could also be a cover-up, honestly.
Shorts: Levi’s 501 Shorts (TTS, Hotline Bling) – if you know me, I LOVE THESE SHORTS. See this post.
Sandals: Birkenstocks Mayari (Stone Pull Up) – wearing size 40. I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
Bag: French Baskets Round Fringe Bag – from the same Etsy shop as the backpack above. Another great one. The long fringe tied from each side of the handle makes the bag look unique and fun.
#5: Birkenstocks With a Printed Mini Dress
dress: Show Me Your Mumu Byron Dress (Mexicali, TTS, wearing Small) – this thing is so adorable. I love it. It is on the short side, but doesn’t bother me…because it wears so well with a flat pair of shoes. The print is on point, too. Basically, this is a terribly fabulous dress.
sunglasses: Nuni Large Round Sunglasses (matte black) – not exact pair I’m wearing, but very similar and I paid about the same for mine.
bag: Pulama Straw Top Handle Handbag – fun little bag for Summer.
sandals: Birkenstocks Mayari (Stone Pull Up) – wearing size 40. I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
#6: Birkenstocks With A Slit Dress Over Jeans
dress: Who What Wear Striped Sleeveless Button-Down Midi Dress (TTS, wearing Small) – this dress. It’s been one of those pleasant surprise-type pieces. I knew it would look great with a heel of some sort, but I knew I’d only get enough wear out of it if I could wear it with flat sandals….and well, it totally works! I am obsessed with it now…wear it all of the time. Love it over means, too.
jeans: Everlane High-Rise Skinny Jean (TTS, mid blue, wearing 27) – this is a jean that I wasn’t particularly excited about at first, but it has grown on me…and now I regularly grab them to wear with a crop top or…oh, hey! The dress above. They are a more stuff jean, but since I’m used to Levi’s, I have no problem with that. They do not stretch out terribly by the end of the day either, which I appreciate.
sunglasses: Nuni Large Round Sunglasses (matte black) – not exact pair I’m wearing, but very similar and I paid about the same for mine. I’ve had great success with cheap shades found on Amazon.
sandals: Birkenstocks Mayari (Stone Pull Up) – wearing size 40. I am a 9.5, usually, so I went with the 40, which is for 9-9.5 size foot. I’ve found this particular color is very versatile.
bag: Pulama Straw Top Handle Handbag – fun little bag for Summer. Looks cute with a print.
Comfortable footwear that can pass as a major fashion statement. YES. Alleluia. These are the kinds of things that give me life.
Cheers,
Cams
Find me over on Instagram (@camilledipaola) and say hey! I love visitors and am pretty good at responding to messages. ? Also, I share a lot more of my messy, crazy life on there. It’s a PARTY.
This post could not be more timely, as I just ordered this pair (my 3rd pair! ?) this morning! I just can’t stand wearing regular flip flops and having dirty feet at this point I’m my life anymore and I feel like that doesn’t happen with Birks. Maybe because they’re a more substantial sole. Anyway, I love both of the dresses you pair them with here! That mini dress would be excellent with the ones I just ordered, and I saw the Who What Wear dress in Target today and fell in love! Also, i believe that exact pair of Levi’s shorts is on sale right now, and there’s a code for an additional 40% off sale. Love this post! Thanks!

OH, awesome! I’m with you. Some sandals feel too dainty for the day-to-day. I do like being able to slip them off and on and not really worry about them getting dirty. I garden in them and then I run out of the house in them all of the time! Cheers.
Cam! Your hair in the last few styles is to DIE FOR!
thanks for saying that! I’ve been meh about it, since my last cut…thought it was a bit too short, too many layers when I wanted it blunt…BUT THANK YOU. I keep messing around with the idea of growing my hair out, but aaaaahhh. Cheers.
BIRKS FOR LIFE! I may need a pair of Mayaris to compete with my Arizonas (and Gizehs…and Madrids…).
and I’m going Arizona next! 😉
Love the jeans/dress combo! Any advice on the width issue with the Birks? I think I might need a narrow, but the styles there are limited
Hmm. Ya know, I don’t know! I have seen people wearing them with very tiny, thin feet…and I guess they just look a bit bigger on them. Id say try them out in the normal width and see if they are that much wider than your foot (if that helps at all. ha). Cheers, Cams
Super cute! I love my Birks too after previously (pre-child) swearing I wouldn’t ever be caught dead in them 🙂 In addition to shorts and cute tops I regularly wear mine with denim skirts and a cute peasant top, maxi dresses (of course!), and midi or full length straight skirts, again with a slightly voluminous top. Love all these extra ideas to help mix things up – thanks!
haha, I hear ya! I used to roll my eyes when my friend would talk about how much she loved them. Jokes on me! Cheers, Cams
