Mamas!! This is our new monthly series called How We Wear It, where *we* show all of the different ways to rock a wardrobe basic. And by "we" I mean…all y'all. If there was One. Thing. our readers communicated LOUD AND CLEAR via the survey, it's this: You want to see a wider range of body types represented here on ANMJ.
So. I'll show you how I've been styling my old standbys, and so will Cam. And then, dear readers, we want to hear from YOU. You can play along via our Linky party at the bottom (you can sign up at the bottom of this article or on Cam's page), you can send us an email (send it to either Cam or I), upload a pic to ANMJ's Facebook page, or use Instagram with the hashtag: #howwewearit. As reader pics come in, I'll be keeping this page up-to-date.
Ready?
Ladylike Cardi + Graphic Tee
My favorite outfits are, by far, just a slightly more interesting version of the ubiquitious jeans-and-a-tee. And really – one can only wear so many scarves. Enter the ladylike cardi + graphic tee combo as an alternative.
On their own, each piece is…fine. Nice enough.
But together? I kinda love 'em.
(wearing: sweater - J.Crew Jackie Cardigan…tee – Lords of Liverpool Tokyo tee at Urban Outfitters)
They don't even need to match, per se, which makes the whole thing easier, of course. In fact, I think it's better if they don't.
BTW – notice the monogram? I monogrammed this cardi eons ago, as joke for one of my dear friends on her birthday. She was Southern, I was anti-monogram, so…yeah. I showed up monogrammed for her birthday. But the joke is on me, right? I ended up loving this cardi SO. MUCH. MORE. once it was monogrammed.
With Ripped Jeans
In the same vein as the graphic tee are ripped jeans. I love pairing slightly subversive elements with a nice-girl cardi. And it makes my monogram feel slightly ironic, rather than overtly preppy. Or said another way: Blah blah blah it's just more me.
Date Night:
With pearls, natch.
(wearing: sweater - J.Crew Jackie Cardigan…tee – J.Crew Linen V-Neck tee in blush…jeans – same but not so destroyed…shoes – similar…necklace – similar)
Play Date:
Shouldn't all monogrammed cardigans be worn with pink lipstick? Even when wearing sneakers?
(wearing: sweater - J.Crew Jackie Cardigan…tee - J.Crew Linen V-Neck tee in blush…jeans - Abercrombie Straight Leg in Medium Destroyed…sneaks – similar…belt – similar)
As a Shirt… (Bonus Points for Adding a Jacket)
I love the idea of buttoning the cardigan up and wearing it as a shirt. Awesome for nursing mamas, too.
Cam nailed it. Check out her full look, as well as one other faaabulous outfit (hint: think moto) here.
OK READERS!! Over to you! Send in your pics to aintnomomjeans (at) gmail (dot) com. Or…use the linky tool below my signature.
From Natalie W (and her Mom):
Natalie wears her cardi under a puffer vest, and over a cute, striped belly. (Aren't stripes the best on a bump?) Her mom goes all girly and ruffly in a wrap cardi.
xoxo,
S
ps. Did you notice the super-cool button Cam made? No? Look to the right-most column, below the ads. It tells you what's coming up in our How We Wear It Series for the next several months. I also included the code if you want to grab it for your own blog.
Love it with the graphic tee! Who knew I neeeeded one. And this nursing mama is stealing Cams idea, pronto! The stripes and that red bag….I think I’m in love.
Love both your looks, I’m always drawn to “those boring cardis” when shopping but usuaully end up putting them back on the rack cause I always feel to preppy or something when I wear the few I already own haha and think “don’t do it again, you never like them as much on you as you do on others”
But you have inspired me to attempt wearing one with some oomph tomorrow, which is perfect timing since I have been trying to stick to my goal of posting something fashion related every friday.
I’d love to add your button and be a part of this monthly challenge but I’m pretty new to blogging and when I attempted adding the button it was squished? any suggestions on how to unsquish it?
Oh geez. YES. I will fix – gah! So sorry about that!
Sent from my iPhone
Ok – I *think* I fixed it. Let me know. Thanks!
Woah, I think you just solved my “how to be comfortable yet stylish on a casual Easter” issue.
Just added my picture of what I’m wearing today. Work like wear today, but I love the versatility of my navy cardigan with all things, mainly jeans though…
Fixed, looks much better unsquished 😉 haha! Thanks so much Shana, hoping to have a picture to share this afternoon/evening!
I LOVE your blog, wish I had discovered it long ago!
I especially love the graphic tee combo. it gives the ladylike cardigan an edge that would make it palatable for me.

Love the cardi with the graphic tee! And those distressed jeans are perfect! (I just destroyed another pair of mine today.)

Knocked Up Fabulous
Love it with the pearls and casual denim and esp love it with graphic T..I think that’s my fav, and I NEVER would have thought to do that! Thank you!
I’ve never felt like I look good in the “ladylike cardigan” style; my boobs are just. too. big. proportionately on my body. I just don’t think I can do cardigans. Occasionally I’ve tried – I have at least 1 hanging in my closet – but IMO they make my 36D-boobed-body look so bad, compared to a V-neck look (which is infinitely better on me).
Ah well, que sera.
But as an addendum to my previous comment:
I do love the cardigan + graphic tee look you’ve got here, and cardigan + destroyed denim, for those who feel good about cardigans. Best cardigan looks that I’ve seen.
