How I’m Wearing My Non-Skinny Jeans

Back in the day, we all scoffed at ‘skinny jeans’ and wondered how in the heck we’d move away from our bootcuts and flares. We then scoffed at ‘mom jeans’, me included, and thought ‘there is no way that 80’s trend is coming back.’ Aaand…we all remember the cropped flares shenanigans of 2016. Trends are funny and are always so shocking at first…then we slowly warm to some of them.

When it comes to jeans, I’d venture to say there’s no one style that is always in-fashion. There’s no one wash or one cut that is forever in-style. Now, in-style is the key term there. Maybe you don’t give two you-know-whats and you wear your vintage wash Levi’s from the 90’s and have worn them all along. And to that I say GO YOU (well, actually, also because they’re totes back in now, too)! Yes, wear whatever jean style you want, mamas. But we here at TME kinda have to try out the trends and attempt to report our take on what’s currently ‘in.’

Are We In A Skinny Jean Rut?

Shana and I were talking about a month ago or so, and we were both worried we’d gotten in a skinny jean rut. Will I ever totally quit the skinny jean style? I don’t think so. I think they wound up surprising all of us with how wearable and flattering they are. But do I want to keep shelling out some fresh ideas for us all? Yes. Do I want to stay on top of current trends? Why yes, the designer in me says a big yes. It’s fun! SO…here we go with a few of my favorite outfits styled with my new favorite pair of non-skinny jeans.

My Go-To Outfits For Wearing Non-Skinny Jeans

Balloon Sleeve Top & Booties

Peep this — we're adjusting to the non-skinny jean trend & trying different outfits to see just how wearable & flattering this denim look is.Free People Found My Friend Sweatshirt – Soft and like a cuter sweatshirt. Runs slightly big. Wearing a Small and thinking I’d have liked an XS. The one linked is a scoop neck version I like even better. Ivory is selling quickly. Find red too at that link or a similar shaped ivory top here. This Madewell sweater I love is also very similar. I like the balloon sleeve here with the slightly wider leg of the pant.

BDG Mid-rise Slim Straight Jean – Loving the wash, fit and style of this updated silhouette, kinda between a straight leg and a boyfriend cut, but in an ankle length. These are easy to wear and comfy as they have a bit of stretch. Don’t worry, they haven’t totally replaced my Madewell favs, but these are a solid update to my black jean collection and very affordable! They’re a much higher rise on me than the model shows — they hit right at my belly button. Wearing size 27.

Mules (similar) – I like a bootie or shoe this neutral color with black jeans to keep the look softer than a deep black shoe. They balance the look, whereas a black shoe stands out too much with the faded black jeans.

Sweater, Scarf and Sneakers

J.Crew V Neck Sweater in Supersoft Yarn – I’m currently writing an ode to these sweaters in ‘supersoft yarn.’ I’m totally living in the two I have. Aaand…I want another. That Heather Camel looks gorg. TTS. Wearing a Small.

BDG Mid-rise Slim Straight Jean – Loving the wash, fit and style of this updated silhouette — kinda between a straight leg and a boyfriend cut, but in an ankle length. These are easy to wear and comfy as they have a bit of stretch. Don’t worry, they haven’t totally replaced my Madewell favs, but these are a solid update to my black jean collection and very affordable! They’re a much higher rise on me than the model shows. They hit right at my belly button. Wearing size 27.

Adidas Superstars – One of the most flattering white shoes I own. I grab these ALL. THE. TIME. They’re super comfy and seem to magically go with all kinds of pants, shorts or even dresses.

Scarf (similar) – A super-soft black scarf is my most-worn scarf for sure.

Hoodie, Combat Boots & Moto Jacket

Daily Ritual Hooded Pullover – This is so soft, comfy and flattering. Love it. It’s also long enough to wear over leggings if you wanna be more covered, but it works half-tucked, too. So good. Wearing Small.

AllSaints Bales Leather Jacket – This one is SO good. So soft, stretches only slightly with wear, so cool. And that collar. I love love this and have had it for a good year now. A great item for the wishlist. Wearing US 6.

Lucky Brand Idara II Leopard Combat Boot – Favorite. Shoes. TTS, but I can’t wear a heavy sock, so go up a half size if you want to. I LOVE these for making any outfit cooler.

Bright Sweater & Leopard Booties

Again a bit oversized sweater on top balances with the straight leg jean here, but be sure to stay with something in a cropped length or close to your waistline.

They hit right at my belly button. Wearing size 27.

Boots (Similar) – You know I love a good leopard boot. One with a kitten heel is great for walkability while still adding a bit of a polish to these slightly slouchier jeans. I’d also wear these jeans and boots with a tee and blazer.

Wrap Sweater & High Tops

Leith Wrap Sweater – Don’t mind my weird look here. It’s what happens after too many outfits. My face stops knowing what to do…Regardless, Scotti & I both love this sweater. I like it with high-waisted jeans because it does hit right at the waistline, which makes it extra flattering on shorter figures. It runs large. Wearing an XS.

Ugg Olive High Top (similar) – These are cute and similar colors to my almost-sold-out Steve Madden sneaker.

A Few More Non-Skinny Jeans

Have you ventured into the non-skinny jean look for yourself? I still grab my black skinny jeans but it’s fun to have these in the rotation now, too. I’d love to hear any of your current favorite straight leg or mom-jean finds!

Until next time,

  1. The hoodie + moto jacket is just the perfect weekend combo! As for mom jeans, I’ve been all about American Eagle lately. Love the fit and they do some cool but different colours (blush pink, pine green)

  2. Please do a piece on what the heck we’re all supposed to do with our ankles now that it’s cold and all the pants I see everywhere are cropped! I just want full-length pants back! Haha. 🙂

    • Haha. Shana has addressed that before! Sometimes wearing socks the color of your jeans works ok. I’ve done that before as has she, but not yet with this style jean. Mostly it seems to work with sneakers. I’ll agree it’s tricky though. I’m loving the ‘sock boots’ as I guess we call them. If they are skinny around the ankles they could definitely work here. I’ll be living in the combat boots most of the winter for that reason!

  3. Please don’t hate me, but (as a longtime reader!) I honestly LOVE these on you—more than skinnies! Also, if you do want to venture into mom jean territory, I love Everlane’s cheeky high rise straight. Super flattering, easy to wear, and comfy after a few wears (the waist is a little tight at first).
