I started this post two weeks ago. The world was changing then, but those realities had not yet really hit our home. I was shopping for my own outdoor spaces, for a friend’s amazing pool area, and for a client’s balcony.
Between then and now, a lot has changed for all of us. And now it seems, for the foreseeable future, that we will all be spending more time at home, with our own families. This post is now taking a different shape for me as I’m sensing some urgency on many people’s parts to create spaces of refuge in their own homes where they can decompress from the weight of an uncertain world, and enjoy the new-found family time at home.
Outdoor Furniture: 5 Comfy, Sustainable Patio & Dining Sets
There are so, so many choices in outdoor furniture, and it is seemingly such a large investment, that it can feel a bit daunting. My five favorite lines of outdoor furniture, that can be readily ordered, online, are below. None of them are inexpensive; however, they are the ones I find to be of strong quality, manufactured from renewable or sustainable materials, that will last, and are comfortable. They are all also lines from which you could possibly balance a budget by including a few pieces of, along with other selections that are more affordable. Some are also on sale.
More posts on plenty of affordable accents, other pieces, and sets and ways to blend them coming soon. For now, here’s the favorite five starter set for outdoors, because we can all use a little fresh air right about now.
This is one of my favorite sets because of those super-clean, softened, eased, modern lines and ample cushions. And it’s flexible; works well as a set and as accent pieces. The only drawback, is there is neither a sectional nor dining set available in this line.
Kiln-dried solid teak wood, as far as outdoor furniture goes, is wise. The wood and process help prevent warping, splitting, cracking, mildew — all the things that happen to furniture exposed to the elements. This set is also constructed using mortise and tenon joinery — the pieces are not screwed together…it’s a cleaner look, and also more durable. You can choose various cushion slip covers in various fabrics including Sunbrella, if white scares you or isn’t your thing. And the set has protective furniture covers available; covers are always a good thing.
Easy on the eyes; nice clean, straight modern lines; and mixed materials. The balance of powder-coated steel and wood is beautiful. This is available in a sectional, a loveseat and lounge chairs. There are also multiple accent pieces from the same collection, as well as full and bistro dining sets. The drawback on this one is that the cushions, while durable, only come in white.
Long live my love of Loll Designs. The company, first of all, has an interesting story, for anyone interested in distracting themselves with happy stories right now. The design of all of their products, is easy to love. And while they lean modern, they have their take on more traditional as well, so a little something for everyone.
The common thread, is the recycled materials and screw-less construction of all of their outdoor furniture, the many color options, and the plain fact that while I love cushions….cushions, outdoors, are complicated. They either need to be covered or cleaned, or both, and will wear in time. My very favorite thing about Loll outdoor pieces is that they are comfortable, without cushions. And so if you need to look at something beautiful outdoors, rather than at many beautiful things covered much of the year, THIS is a great option. And when the pollen blows, and the street dust dusts, and the leaves fall, and the mud splashes up, you just hose them down to clean again. Lollygagger is my own favorite of their designs, but there are zero that I don’t love — they are all beautiful, and from swings to rockers, to chairs and benches and tables and stools…they have so, so, so many options. And Loll pieces play well with others if we are mixing and matching. DWR semi-annual sale is a great source for. And 2Modern also has an extensive collection of Loll.
This remains, my very favorite of the favorites. First of all, there is a Portside (has arms), and a low version of (no arms), so note that detail. I love them both. There is pretty much every configuration one can imagine of sectional, sectional with chaise, sofa, lounge chair, swivel lounge chair, full lounge chair and ottoman, plus dining in benches, multiple chairs, square, circle, rectangle and oval, in multiple sizes. The Portside team, is busy. If you’d like for your entire outdoor set to be coordinated, this is absolutely the line that has the most available options. And while the photos all include grey/white cushions, there are cushion covers in Sunbrella fabric in all the colors also available. And the whole line is FSC certified (sustainably sourced).
Reclaimed teak, exaggerated modern lines, and plump cushions have me in love with these pieces. There are only two options, the sofa and the lounge chair, so this set pairs well with others, but is limited in its own selection. That said, it’s also the outdoor set that I would also place indoors, no hesitation. And if you are lucky enough to have a transitional indoor/outdoor space, these might be perfect pieces there as well. Otherwise, they are gorgeous accent pieces, especially the lounge chairs, to add to a mixed collection.
Wishing you and your families health, and all the best cuddle time indoors and out.
