I used to spend a ton of time getting ready. I’d sit in front of the mirror and shuffle through my products, applying each one with precision and care, sipping on a drink (coffee or wine, depending on the time of day) listening to my favorite tunes or watching my favorite show. This was obviously before kids. It’s not like I go without makeup now, but that whole “luxurious lounging” ship has definitely sailed. Between Greenlea begging me to put makeup on her (no) while simultaneously gouging her finger into any blush or eyeshadow she can get her hands on, and Ozzie sticking his little hand into the two-inch slot that my “child-proof” latches allow to pull out and throw as many tubes of lipstick as he can before I grab him, getting ready is decidedly NOT luxurious, and precision is pretty much a thing of the past.

I’ve adapted, like all parents do, and so have the products and techniques I use. I may not have all day to blend out the perfect smokey eye or the time to line, blot, and apply the perfect red lip, but there are shortcuts. And since I’m not giving up my makeup anytime soon nor sacrificing time with my babies (the little makeup-destroyers that they are) to apply it, I’ve had to perfect the art of speedy makeup. That is, makeup that’s easy to apply on-the-go but doesn’t look like it.

Nordstrom is one of my favorite go-to places for all things beauty: free shipping/free returns is always helpful, and their complimentary samples mean I can try anything before I commit to buying it.  (Not to mention their gift with purchase program that means way more product for your money . . . which also makes great gift ideas for the holidays!) Here are two quick and easy looks I created from Nordstrom’s great selection of brands:

Speedy Makeup Looks That Don’t Look Like It

First, start with the basics: foundation and concealer. Find ones that apply easily and cover without looking cakey. I love this one from Charlotte Tilbury because it feels weightless on your skin and is hydrating, sweat-proof, humidity-proof, waterproof and transfer-resistant. (Um . . . yes, all of the above please.) I especially love that I don’t need to set it with powder but still get a natural matte finish. This concealer is amazing at covering up under-eye circles and, like the foundation, is also water-, sweat- and humidity-resistant. With both formulas, a little goes a long way (I only need one pump of foundation for my entire face and if the concealer creases, you’re wearing too much), and they’re both long-wearing so there’s no need for touch-ups.

Mamas — we got you. With little time to primp, we love a speedy makeup process that's still gorg. Bold or sheer, bright or smokey, get the look here.

Look 1: Focus On The Lips With Comfortable Matte Lipstick

After you’ve got your skin perfected with foundation and concealer, the easiest way to look “done” is to add lipstick. Keep the eyes simple with mascara and maybe a bit of highlighter.  (In these pics I’m wearing Charlotte Tilbury’s Full Fat Lashes Mascara and just a swipe of Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Color in Moonlight.)

Go Bold

Matte lips often get a bad rap because they can be so uncomfortable to wear. Lots of the formulas are drying, flake off or are generally just difficult to apply. YSL’s The Slim Matte is a non-drying, creamy formula that feels weightless on your lips (not dry or cakey) and comes in a ton of highly-pigmented shades—which means rich color on your lips with just one swipe. (Don’t just take my word for it—the reviews are amazing.)

…Or Go Sheer

If the idea of bold lips is a bit too scary, you need to try YSL’s The Slim Sheer Matte Lipstick. I’ve never really tried anything like it . . . it’s like a lipstick and a balm all in one with a matte finish that isn’t drying. It’s like getting that perfectly blotted lipstick look without actually having to go through the process of applying and blotting. Just swipe it on for a sheer wash of color or layer a few swipes for more intense color. Application is literally a breeze with this one.

Look 2: Focus On The Eyes With Easy-to-Apply Eyeshadow Pencils

Lots of people (like Shana, for example) prefer a dramatic eye over bright lipstick. If that’s you, meet your new best friend: Charlotte Tilbury’s Color Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil. An “eyeshadow pencil that transforms or enhances your natural eye color with one easy step,” this is the fastest, easiest smokey eye I’ve ever done. Add mascara and neutral lips and you’re done.

Go Bright

In the pics below I’m wearing Amethyst Aphrodisiac, one of the shades made for green eyes (although purple is a universally-flattering shade that looks good on practically everyone). I applied it along my upper and lower lash line and blended it upward into the crease with my finger. You have to blend fairly quickly because after 30 seconds it sets . . . and will not fade or budge until you want to take it off. No running, no creasing, no nothing.  Mamas — we got you. …Or Go Smokey

Although this “Amber Haze” color is technically made for brown eyes, I still loved it. It was a more traditional take on the smokey eye with the same ease of application. I think I want one of these pencils in every color, because they really are all gorgeous and stay put even without an eyeshadow primer underneath. (I have mentioned how easy they are to use, right?)

OR Go All Out: Charlotte Tilbury The Bombshell Look Set

So when you do have time to focus on getting ready and want to try something a little extra, go for one of Charlotte Tilbury’s Look Sets. I have loved EVERYTHING I’ve ever tried from her, and these coordinated sets make it so easy to put a look together. The Bombshell Look Set has the eyeshadow pencil, mascara and blush I’m wearing in these pics, along with a long-lasting, easy-to-use liquid eyeliner and coordinated red lip pencil, lipstick and gloss that’s perfect for the holidays. Talk about a great gift. (Gwen has The Uptown Girl Look Set and loves it!)

  1. Hi. I have the same question. I love your lip color in the Amethyst Aphrodisiac eye shadow picture. What color is it?

  2. Hello. I was also ( apparently among many) who wanted the details about THAT lip color. I went to the site, but it did not link to the specific shade. Is the color Nude Pop? Thanks!!!!
