OK, so you may think “gray tops = boring.” In some cases, you might not be wrong. But year after year I find myself wanting more…gray tops.
The good thing is that with me, you know it’s not gonna be some basic shirt we’re trying to get excited about here. Spoiler alert: There are zero plain gray tees in this post. I guess I should have called it “Interesting Gray Tops” but that’s neither here nor there at this juncture.
Easy Interesting Gray Tops I Love
ANYHOO…I love gray tops. What can I say? And I really mean heathered gray sweatshirts, ribbed gray sweaters, cool over-dyed gray tops. Leave those flat gray colors be (maybe unless they’re silk) and go for something with texture in the grayness. THAT is the sweet spot. Trust me. This is coming from your girl who spends way too many waking hours thinking about these things. Let’s get to it…
Rebecca Minkoff Janine Puff Sleeve Sweatshirt
Top | Jeans | Vans | Sunglasses
This cutie is hands-down my current favorite. It’s the Janine hoodie from Rebecca Minkoff, and it’s soft, cozy and seriously cute, too. There’s also a crewneck version, but I prefer the hoodie. (And for you warm weather peeps, here’s a short sleeve version from Madewell.)
Unlike some hoodies, this hoodie fits a little more streamlined but has that touch of sporty-meets-feminine and I love, love. I had to sleep in it the other night at the coast because it was chilly, and it was even super-comfy for that! Size up if you want more slouchiness but TTS if you want it to fit like it does here. Wearing a S. (As a refresher, I’m 5’4″, age 43 and a size 28 in jeans, S in tops, 32DD and 6 in dresses/pants.)
Top | Jeans | Sunglasses | Bracelets | Watch Band
Free People Too Good Sweater
Sweater | Pants | Glasses | Bracelets
This Free People cutie was a more recent Nordstrom purchase and the neckline is just so so good, as is the softness of the cotton ribbing. It runs a little large, and so I went with an XS here, but if you want more length, don’t size down. It’s fairly cropped. It DOES come in other shades too, but why would you bother? Haha.
The [BLANKNYC] Griege Option
Gray, griege…simply semantics. This is definitely more brownish-gray for sure, but it’s still an awesome top and fits in this category. It’s beautifully over-dyed (I’m such a sucker for over-dyed) and a really well-made piece. The matching pants are also great. They’re thicker cotton, not too fleecy, wash beautifully and are just unexpectedly good. Guess I wear all the puffed sleeves. now, but I like that these are subtle here on the BlankNYC top. So cute. TTS. Wearing a S in both pieces.

Stay tuned for an article highlighting that cute vintage Nike zip hoodie below, perfect for layering. I’m so digging the AllSaints and Athleta options below. Woah. Good.
I think I like gray tops because they don’t take themselves too seriously…just like me.

Go grey tops! Can you talk about the sizing on the imogene + willy pants? Love those.
Thanks! Love them, too. They fit TTS but shrink back a bit with washing. They definitely fit like a ‘nice’ pair of PJ bottoms. They are thick so no worries there but the drawstring waist and higher rise/dropped crotch does. I had them hem mine before sending and they were super helpful in getting back to me quickly and working out the perfect length. They look cute rolled, too, though if you don’t want to do that!
