J.Crew Try-On: Boot Cut Jeans, Double Denim & More

When I get in an outfit slump or am just not inspired, I often turn to browsing J.Crew. Which is hilarious because it’s also what I used to do in high school for outfit inspo. And while my overall style has evolved (I hope) quite a bit from high school, J.Crew still seems to spark some ideas in my brain when it comes to fashion.

I dressed SO preppy in high school and college. My brother was also into the J.Crew aesthetic, and there were a few years where that’s all he would wear. We come from a long line of clothes horses on both sides of our families, so I blame that. He is going to love that I’m writing this about him (hi, Jon! Maybe I’ll dig up some HS pics of us over on my Insta hahaha).

Pullover Sweaters, Updated Denim & More Outfit Inspo: A J.Crew Try-On

Anyhoo, that preppy/classic/chic/layering look J.Crew always captures? Yep. That’s where I go to get inspired to try it out myself…again and again. To me a layered look, a great collar, layered collars…it’s my jam. And while I do enjoy an edgy moment, a black leather moment, and a moto jacket moment…I love classic prep. So let’s get out of my past and into some try-ons, shall we?

1. The Striped Cotton Cashmere Zip-Up

Chic, preppy, soft. This striped pullover sweater is good. I adore it zipped up almost all the way. I tried my regular size S and it’s perfect for a fitted look. Size up if you want a little more slouch, but this layered under jackets really well in my typical size.

It’s not for the long-torso’d, though (I’m 5’4″ with a shorter torso) unless you’re into pretty high-rise bottoms or don’t mind a bit of a crop. The stripes and the collar are what do it for me on this. It also comes in an ivory and light blue option.

A Trench Over The Zip-Up Sweater Is Giving Me Life

I am living for this look. This trench isn’t J.Crew, but they always have similar options and I knew I needed to try it with this sweater. I will be recreating this look again and again! (I’ve included a little shopping widget of even more trench coats below)

2. The Slim Demi Boot Jeans

I’ll be honest, I ordered these slim demi boot jeans because of the front crease. I’m slightly obsessed with finding jeans that have that right now. These also fit amazingly well. And since they’re a slim bootcut, I can get down with this shape.

The only thing I’m unsure about on them is the faded spots/whiskering. I don’t know if I think that’s very current, and I wish it looked more authentically worn instead of forced. But alas, these jeans have other such good qualities I think they’re a solid find. TTS. Wearing a 28. Some stretch, but not a lot.

I’m on the fence about the western boots with the bootcut jeans right now (too on-the-nose? or right on-trend?) but pairing preppy pieces with them like this sweater is making it kinda exciting? Jury is still out but I’ll let ya know…I feel like I need one more non-western element here like a…haha, trench coat.

3. The Lilac Sherpa Pullover

This color is definitely what drew me to this sherpa pullover. I love how it pairs with blues and neutrals. SO good! It’s so, so cozy…and again, has a great collar. It’s quite boxy through the bodice and sleeves, but that makes it nice for layering. I’ve done a half-tuck here, which I would totally wear not just for photos, but it is a little long on me if I untuck it. TTS for a boxy fit, wearing a S.

I thought I loved the look on the left when I tried it on, but now I’m like, oh god I’ve lived in the Northwest for too long hahaha. I think to make it more current I’d wear my full length AGOLDE jeans instead of the pair I cropped.

4. The Western Classic Fit Shirt

I also adore a double denim look. Classic, easy, but somehow a little polished too, especially when you pop on a heel and a bag with some bling. I like this top best with my distressed straight-leg denim, but as I ease back into full-length and bootcut styles, I am realizing I don’t mind those either…with a heel. This shirt is great with quality details, stitching and fabric…I just wish it weren’t quite so long. It’s OK tucked in, but a little bit tough to get it to lay well at the waistline (a problem I seem to have with many fully tucked shirts.) TTS. Wearing a 6 Regular.

5. The Relaxed Trench Coat

This trench coat is kinda huge, but I kinda love it. It’s so, so cool. I won’t go on and on about it because it’s low in stock, but it’s a great trench if you aren’t shorter than 5’4″ and can get your hands on it. I’ve rounded up a few other great trench coats here since it is selling out.

6. The Boyfriend V Neck Cashmere Sweater

I wore this great sweater all day the other day, and it’s so, so lovely. Soft, chic and perfectly oversized. TTS for that slouchy fit. Wearing a S. J.Crew makes some of our team’s favorite cashmere year after year.

More details on this cute bag from Quince soon, but I love it too, it has great texture and it’s the perfect size. And it’s under $100!

  1. OMG. This trench coat has been on my list and I’m so happy to hear you love it. I snagged it! I’m so excited. I’ve been eyeing that fleece too. Anxiously awaiting your post on your latest fav jeans. Good work!

  2. I love the denim shirt, it’s groovy. That’s a serious wash and I really like it. Hmmmmm, putting it on my list to try……

    • It’s a good one and I think it would look great on you! I am deciding between this one and one from Levi’s but this was softer right out of the box. We shall see! I hope you like it!

  3. I love that you are 5’4″, because I am too! By the photos, I am almost the same size (ok, probably an inch or wider in the middle depending on timing); but super convenient the prearranged outfits. Oftentimes the model is too tall, and I frequently have to shorten the hems.
Also funny that you love getting your haircut, because I do not. Only had it cut once since 2020, and am way overdue. When a friend recommended that I brush it before going out, that made me realize I should think about it. It’s easy to have a nice photo online and let it go in real life. Thanks for the inspiration.❤🖐💃
